  • Join me my dear Oddites as we travel through France on the back roads - where beautiful towns await us and an amazing early 19th century Château, that was closed up decades ago. It remains undisturbed by the progress around it.
    Btw, the circa 1930s HOLY WATER bottle featured on the teaser image, belongs to my collection...minus the holy water :)
    Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

Awesome experience. Seeing the beauty of each country, trying the native cuisine, meeting the people. I love your videos. You give excellent advice. Thank God that I also had the opportunity to visit many beautiful countries in Europe in my youth and later with my wife, the memories will always stay with me/ us for all times, and I will never forget seeing so much beauty in landscape and architecture, history and culture and meeting so many nice and interesting people while we both still could. We are both severely disabled now so our travelling days are over, but none can take our memories away from us and we have our beautiful daughter and Oddie's videos as well, so that is something isn't it ? Oddie, I'm like you, I much prefer to go off of the beaten path and explore the back roads. What you have given us is truly a delight to the senses :-D . Like you, I'm practically chomping on the bit to learn more about the chateau (My husband is an international business traveler for the medical device company that he works for and he doesn't care for Paris either!-It's way to busily manic for him, although he did like Versailles a great deal!) My father would often take myself and my 5 siblings on a Sunday drive after church and we'd always find something new and amazing. How I miss those drives with him. That castle would be an amazing wedding venue! I'd happily go bankrupt with you just to get a shot at buying the chateau. Thank you much for taking us along on this tour. I do indeed look forward to your next video! :-D

      Some viewers have sent me additional information, and it appears that the
      château, although still furnished, (complete with many taxidermy
      specimens!) is in a bad state of decay inside; the roof has caved in, water has ruined much of it - and the owner refuses to
      sell or bequeath it...preferring it to rot into the ground.

      ObsoleteOddity I will never understand how anyone could own this superb piece of architecture and all its contents, only to willfully let it rot and decay. One has to wonder what the story is because I’m sure there must have been many offers over the decades. There is a great mystery in this chateau and its family I am thinking.🖤🇨🇦

    Seeing that beautiful house next to the Hotel de Ville, one can really say that the architects and builders in those days not only loved their trade, but spared no effort or cost to build something special, decorated with love of detail and unique in its own way. Such buildings are not constructed any more and humanity and society loses out because of the lack of such beauty in our midst. I have also travelled the country roads of France from Brittany to the Cote d'Azur in the past and agree totally with Oddie in his appreciation of the charm and beauty of the wonderful country, not only in its fantastic countryside but also the lovely architecture of the villages and towns. I once saw a similar, but much larger carrousel in Strasbourg once, it was gigantic and ancient - I don't know when they started building those funfair attractions, but it must have been an early model - with lovely old carriages and horses on it. The Château Oddie couldn't get entrance to is lovely, I can understand his frustration not being able to get into the place. Just imagine what might still be hidden inside it's beautiful walls ! Great video, as always, Oddie ! Love your narrative and approach to the subject of old buildings, antiques and history in general ! 🌟🌟🌟

    What a great way to end an exhausting and emotionally draining month. I love these tours and I have some catching up to do . Thankfully I have finally managed to get some assistance and will have more time now . You're an oasis in all the craziness that happens in this world Oddie and I'm not sure if you are aware of the calming power of your voice and how therapeutic it is to go on a tour with you .
    I feel I have to mention Erin . I truly believe that her spirit stopped by to bid you farewell before she left on her eternal journey . That is the power of your community.
    Would it be possible to trace the owner of the chatue from the family crest above the doorway? It would be great to look inside but I find it eerie that nobody in the town would speak about it . Maybe there's a sinister story about it .
    I think the fish tank is kept for lobster and that's why it was empty.
    Our world is incomprehensibly crazy . We have lost our humanity . I wish we could escape to times when respect meant something .
    Anyway it's so great to be back .
    Ps I'm still having problems with Patreon . I've tried everything even different accounts . Could you please check if by some glitch it isn't available in SA . I will have time this week and will definitely sort it out one way or another.
    With much love and respect

      Good point about the fish tank!
      I had a look and some SA patrons have reported a total outage of Visa payments, so I don't know if that has something to do with the problems you're experiencing. I shall send you the link via messenger to Patreon support, send them an email detailing the issues you're having. It might be a temporary glitch. If they don't reply in a week, let me know and I'll get on to them.

    Ah, beautiful day!! Got up with my morning coffee, and lo, Oddie's been touring again. I wholeheartedly agree, I would like to make my own way as to touring. Guides show what they think you're interested in. Only I know what really interests me. Usually, the glit and glitter attracts, but the people and their ways of living, are far more interesting to me. The palace was interesting in its structure. But as to the remnants inside, the Nazis were known for looting about everything of interest or value where ever they went, as were the allied forces to some degree. Love the carousel! Beautiful and well cared for. And not just horses, but camels and giraffes too. Lovely. Ah, but the jewel of the tour, the country chateaux. Whats to say. Beautiful!! So lovely in its structure and architectural design. So glad you recorded this. It gives me time to view it slowly and repeatedly, absorbing all of it. Like a fine meal that you linger over, relishing each bite. Its a tour also through the mind of the designer, his knowledge of structure and support, as well as pleasing line and beauty. They built so well then. And yes, would desperately love to see the inside. Hopefully, it's possible;e in the future!! So sad that it's not being better cared for. Natures habit is to remove anything not native to nature. And it is quite efficient at it. One only has to see Detroit, Michigan, here in the states to understand that, as well as other places. As to the Jeeps, I'm thinking one was bought to restore the other, but something derailed the effort. Finances or death? Who's to know!! A fine and lovely presentation as always, dear Oddie and Oddete. But, and I must agree, much too short. But then, the care you put into them, they all seem too short. Ah, but with age comes patience, so I'll wait for the next and go touring with you again soon. Have a fine one, and God Bless !!

      You're right, I had forgotten about the nazi plundering, that and the French Revolution would account for it's absence of original interior furnishings.
      Some viewers have sent me additional information, and it appears that the
      château, although still furnished, (complete with many taxidermy
      specimens!) is in a bad state of decay inside; and the owner refuses to
      sell or bequeath it...preferring it to rot into the ground.
      Cheers my friend, have a great week,
      Oddie

      @@ObsoleteOddity Which means, I assume, that no one gains entrance to see its remains. Must be some leaks in the grand lady your camera doesn't show. Looked sound enough from the outside, or he just doesn't want to be bothered. So sad to know she will just rot away. Sad ending to a beautiful structure !!

    Oddie, I couldn't agree more with your introduction. I have spent literally years roaming the continent. So many treasures to be found off the tourist track. This is the reason I will have nothing to do with Brexiteers, I will never forgive the little englanders. My partner and I wanted to move to rural France at some point. I don't do cities any more either. I found the Palace of Versailles very disappointing.
    They're not actually Willys jeeps, they're Hodgkiss's built under licence in France after WW2. There are a number of ways to identify them but I can't remember them precisely.
    Thank you for this lovely tour. I have found this week so terribly depressing with the awful events here at home and abroad. One top of that we lost our beloved bunny boy, Mr Snowy Snowdrop. He'd been a part of our family for 10 years since we rescued him so our hearts are broken at the moment.

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  Před 4 lety

      Sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved kitty, it's heartbreaking I know.
      Thanks for the info, I didn't even know about Hodgkiss. How come it says WILLYS under the windscreen? Or was that other company allowed to use the name?

    • @PurityVendetta
      @PurityVendetta Před 4 lety

      @@ObsoleteOddity Thank you Oddie, you're very kind. As the Hodgkiss and Willys are pretty much identical I wouldn't want to bet my house on guessing exactly which it actually is but most parts are bolt on and interchangeable. I seem to remember something about one type having 'bolt up' wheels (Hodgkiss) and the other having welded ones. These look like civilian utility vehicles which I'd guess are post war. As Willys couldn't possibly produce the huge numbers needed during WW2 the manufacturing was licensed out to lots of companies like Ford and Chrysler. American built versions have a maker's plate on the passenger side dashboard but as you can buy repros they're not always reliable. The American built versions are more expensive than the French ones. I met a clever guy in Normandy who had popped a Willys body onto a Suzuki jeep chassis as it's more modern. The purists are probably having fits at this 😊 I did a small project during my degree looking at changes in production to arm the allies during WW2. As it was a joint project we chose the Jeep to get the boys interested 😁
      Oh, my Mr Snowy was a bunny. He was such a huge character all packed into a tiny but fierce body. Anyone who has shared there home with a bunny will, I'm sure agree. I miss him so much ❤

    • @ObsoleteOddity
      @ObsoleteOddity  Před 4 lety

      @@PurityVendetta Well you certainly seem to know your vehicle facts (do you remember the card games with different types of vehicles?) Well the first jeep did have a metal patent plate on the passenger side @7:23, so maybe that is a WILLYS?
      Sorry for the mix up, I naturally assumed cat as I didn't realise rabbits lived so long. It must have been the love you both gave him.

    • @PurityVendetta
      @PurityVendetta Před 4 lety

      @@ObsoleteOddity Thank you again Oddie. Everyone was so surprised when we told them how old Snowy was. We used to take him everywhere on holiday and he was loved to the moon and back.
      On the Jeep subject, I had to do the assignment with two boys and had to find a subject they liked to keep up there enthusiasm 😉 I have to admit though, I found out so much about the roles of women in industry as the US and UK geared up for war. I still have an amazing collection of women working in traditionally make jobs in industry. It inspired me to learn lots more. If you go to any of the war museums in France look at the proofing marks on German artillery like PAK88's. Interestingly the marks show that much of these guns were still in use in the French army well into the 1960's. If you get far enough north please check out the huge U Boat base on the bay near La Rochelle. It's the one they filmed Das Boot in.
      Looking forward to seeing more of your French adventure ❤

    I ADORE that Chateau. In the US property records are public record and most counties have their info accessible online. I do not know if there is an equivalent in France but whenever I see a place I am interested in I usually Google, county name, state name & Parcel Search and can find the site (each county is different). Good luck finding out information.
