  • King Ludwig the Second (1845-1886) was known as the 'Mad Monarch of Bavaria' but left in his passing a series of fantastic castles that are visited by over 3 million people a year and recognized the world over.
This is the unusual story of an ill-fated King and his tragic end, his strange relationship to the composer Richard Wagner and a first-hand visit to his famous creations.
I also hoped to illustrate how the lush musical selections of Wagner conveying the beauty of the Bavarian mountains and countryside helped to shape the majestic fantasies of King Ludwig.
Hosted by Munich's own Octoberfest Queen, Ms. Brigitte Viez with observations, video and photography by Bruce Blank and Charlene Henning. This is an amateur tourist documentary attempt and has some rather poor German translations, due to unfamiliarity of the exact language - but we hope you can still enjoy the story.
Please note the death photo of King Ludwig is inaccurate - didn't find this out till later.
Thank you for all the comments, both pro and con.

Everybody thought he was crazy, but Germany, to this day, makes a fortune off of the tourist trade to see this castle.

He had an unknown type of insanity. It was called ENJOYING LIFE.

He probably had an anxiety condition and was introverted, so labeling him ‘mad’ is t really fair.

i'm writing a dramedy novel about King Ludwig called "The Mad Swan". it's meant for enjoyment, not as strictly historical. Ludwig is one of my absolute favorite historical figures, so i hope others will enjoy this story about love, fantasy, whimsy, longing, silliness, and eventual tragedy. it should be complete and ready to read in about a year's time. even if it doesn't get popular, i'm writing it in honor of the memory of Ludwig II....a man whose hilarious and tragic story deserves to be told. <3 for Ludwig and everyone else whose adoration of the written word lives on.

It’s funny, if you spend money on war then you’re normal but if yiu spend it on beauty and grand visions you’re mad.

Whatever King Ludwig was, he left much beauty to Germany and for that they should be forever grateful !

Would the arrogant ones, who called the King by a term we will not repeat, such as the speaker relied on, have the ability to appreciate the great geniuses and their creations? Only one with equal level of creative quality in music and imagination in beauty could appreciate King Ludwig II and Richard Wagner's great genius.

I've been to 3 of them; Neuschwanstein, Herrenchemsee & the "hunting lodge" w/ a table which rose up thru the floor to his bedroom. Sailed on Chemsee for 9 months (tough U.S. Army duty)-best time of my life! Back in Texas now.

I just got a really interesting graphic novel and in it is the story of Ludwig. I had never heard the story, so I was compelled for more information. Glad I found this video, thanks Bruce. Very interesting and tragic story.

It's clear Ludwig's great passion in life was to build a Wagnerian theme park, although the concept of a theme park didn't historically exist at that point, but it seems to be what his castles strive for.
