In a recent Klub Outside Q&A, Kubo gave the tiniest of morsels about Yoruichi's mysterious feline form from the Soul Society Arc! So naturally, it seemed like a good opportunity to speculate and discuss her transformations, from the black cat, to the electric cat of TYBW! This is mostly a speculative discussion, but it was fun regardless!

Why is Yoruichi (and other Shihoin family members) able to become a cat? How does it tie into her TYBW Shunko form? Let me know your thoughts down below!

Maybe it's a matter of mastering her feline instincts. She is a Noble and I'd imagine that she had to maintain some level of self control especially if it is a known factor amongst her family. Basically she had to master her feline form like Beast Boy from DC comics does with his transformation, the final form is her removing the delay of pushing aside her feline mannerisms and let everything flow.

Hearing Kubo say "beast" instead of specifically say "Cat" makes me wonder if other animals would be available to the Shihion family

Her initial cat form fits with her love of personal freedom, undoubtedly she used her stealth kitty to occasionally sneak away from the suffocating noble politics alongside their power tripping paranoia. And it helps her fit in and disappear into the human world perfectly, who'd suspect that cute kitty you give milk to is the formidable ex captain of Gotei 13's Stealth Force? Ironic that the other gives her lethal power yet robs her personal autonomy and control.

Based on the fact that Kisuke can trigger her lightning cat form without her knowledge or consent, and that it seems to be a perfect blend of her natural cat form and her shunko, I think that that state is something that Kisuke may have created and imbued Yoruichi with. Knowing Kisuke, he probably did so without asking or even telling her about it until he had already given it to her
True. That might also explain why she occasionally kept her distance from him. Their relationship is quite interesting, they help save the worlds and MIGHT have been more than friends and yet there's some toxicity to it especially on Kisuke's part.
Hope Yoruichi gets more scenes in the anime !! She's one of my favorite characters and she's simply awesome.

I think shunko is shaped by the soul of the individual using it, similar to how a zanpakto takes on it's form based off the soul of it's holder. We know different users get different elements (Yoruichi is lightning, her brother is fire, Soifon is wind) I think the basic forms are accessible to anyone but the advanced forms are unique to the individual. Soi Fon's infinite form looked like butterfly wings, similar to the marks from her zanpakto, Yoruichi's instead got thunder drums.
Honestly the only thing i can imagine is that its supposed to in some relationship to the dog clan. My guess was that these animal clans were originally meant to be spotlighted more as the animal realm is like the only buddist realm the series doesnt refference but ended up being cut for not actually being that important
I thought The World of the Living was the Animal & Human Realm as they are said to overlap in Buddhism. Hueco Mundo = Preta Realm, Hell may be based on Naraka Realms although we can't say for certain. Were Shinigami Deva or Asura with the other being Quincy?

@@ivanbackfromthecardshop8093 We see Hybrids between other existences. Arrancar are Hollows who become more like Shinigami. Why couldn't animal people be a similar case? Ichigo is special being Human, Hollow, Shinigami, & Quincy combined.
Bleach races is complicated you have the Fullbringers who are special humans. I'm not even going to try to explain Bount. Quincy were originally implied to be a clan similar to Fullbringers until we learned just how different they were during the Blood War. The Wiki doesn't even list animals as a race for some reason.

@@resurgingflame Bount Arc was treated as canon in Early Arrancar Arc Anime. Their Semicanon Status is why I mentioned them yet don't want to discuss them equally with the races appearing in the manga. Remember the Shrieker Episode with the Parakeet? Does that relate to animal souls?
I actually assumed it was a common thought that it had to do with her family rather than anything else. The thing about Kubo's comment that strikes me as the most important is that he didn't specify that they turn into cats just that they turn into beasts.
Knowing that it's a hereditary thing, and the fact that Sajin's clan are beasts because it was meant to be a punishment...it makes me wonder if this is the Shihoin clan's punishment for their role in the creation of the Soul King. Regardless, it is interesting stuff, neat that Kubo has given more and more examples that the Noble families have unique powers/weapons.
I definitely think Yoruichi's personality is the behind her being able to take the form of a cat specifically, seeing how Kubo only talked about a "beast" transformation. Interestingly, the Beast Titan shifters in Attack on Titan operate exactly like this, with each Titan Shifter inheriting this specific Titan being able to transform into a different beast reflective of his or her personality, talents, affinities etc.
Isn’t it obvious who/what Yoruichi is? Her skin tone, her elemental cat form? She’s a hidden cloud ninja that became the jinchuriki of the 2-tails and then fled the village. That’s why her fighting style is so taijutsu-focused.
The black cat form is just a transformation jutsu.

I love that it’s unique to her noble Shihouin bloodline. Making the noble houses stand out from the rest is a cool idea. Of course there is also Komamura’s clan.
In the previous Q&A, Kubo said that Yoruichi developed this technique. Probably some of their clan members has beast form, and Yoruichi trained to transform into 100% animal
So could some of the Shihoin clan members be in the world of the living as dogs cats birds and so on? It would be exctremely cool to see that happen in the hell arc if we ever get it
Would not be surprised. Many are certainly strict traditionalists but I'm sure there are a few free spirited rebels who decided noble life and it's dangers is not for them and live in exile. I'm sure it applies to those who don't want to be part of the family business or they fail at it.
I always took Yoruichi as Egyptian since cats were the keepers of the dead. Which go hand in hand with soul reaper.
I always took it as a means for her to stealthily move between the different worlds because she's still able to go to the Soul Society while Urahara isn't.
It's just a thing she can do.
Yoruichi is definitely one of the most unique characters in Bleach, if not all of manga/anime! It would be awesome if Kubo were to go deeper into her lineage and we get more backstory on her family!

My theory about how she was forced into that form is by removing a seal that blocks off that power. She most likely has kept it sealed off so she doesn't accidentally transform into just because she is mad since she doesn't have full control over it. It is likely sealed off on the ones in her family who inherit the ability to transform into a beast as soon as it is known to protect everyone. She may have never been able to fully control that form so she hasn't used it out of fear. That sticker he removed is likely something he used to try and help her train with that power and allow her to not have to constantly focus on keeping it sealed.
I’m assuming by the time we get to the hell arc and she eventually faces her ancestor, she would have mastered that form with her mind intact.

If some shihouins can turn into animals, would they be somehow related to the beast clan? Could yoruichi and komamura be very distant cousins?
What would be if a shihoin had a child with someone from the beast clan? What will the child be?
Komamura is more akin to Inuyasha which is a Dog Family while Yorouchi is from a Cat Family
the difference here is that Komamura is likely direct descendent of a Demon while Yorouchi is likely her ancestor thus only certain individual who have high purity blood can transform like her/Captain level+.
we have seen Komamura direct senior and he is 100% Beast while Komamura is more akin to a Half Beast and Half Human.

There’s no reason to suspect that the Shunko isn’t special to her bloodline. She’s part of a group of long standing noble blood, her ancestors very well could have invented the Shunko technique to work in combination with their bloodline transformation. As a added benefit of the technique other people can also learn it.
And I originally thought the Shihoin had a beast clan ancestor somewhere waaaaaay back once we found out about best doggo. The thought has only become more solid with Kubo saying it’s a bloodline thing now
Back in the day, since she didn't have a Zanpakto, I always liked to think that this was related to it. Her Shikai was her having an agile/cat like move set, while her Bankai was full cat. As the story progressed, especially with the novels it became clear that wasn't the case, but it always made more sense to me (until it was shown to not be the case) than it being some sort of special genetic ability.
A part of me does think this could tie in to the mystery of yoruichis zanpakuto, like what if all the shihoin that do have a beast that they're apparently born with take the place of their zanpakuto? granting the abilities like yoruichi but making it so their zanpakuto is basically inert because their inner spirit is just a feral animal

A way easier explanation would've been that it was just her gigai. Since it's apparently not, to go into it further, the form seemingly behaves like a Reiatsu Concealing Gigai, perhaps even the source of inspiration and examination that Kisuke used for his invention that he used to hide himself, Tessai, and the Visoreds
I think as a passed down trait it makes some amount of sense as far as spying/espionage purposes go. I can appreciate it for what it is, although I was secretly hoping it was something Urahara had come up with.

I’d have to look into the exact details to be completely sure, but it may be her soul reaper skills and Shihoin blood clashing, causing a similar kind of “Rage Mode” to Ichigo’s hollowfications. And she may have been working together with Kisuke to develop it
I think it’s a simple as Kubo had one idea for the character at the start of series but decided to go in a different direction as series progressed and gained popularity
Kubo answered a similar question a while ago stating Yoruichi invented the technique to turn into a cat to actually sneak out of the house lol
Given her cat nature/curse then I wonder if her Bankai ties into it too. Given that it is supposedly not useful for combat it really makes me wonder. Maybe her zanpakuto is a grooming brush and her bankai is a restorative sleep that heals all her wounds and lengthens her lifespan? 😅

There's a curious thing here, since in another Klub Outside answer (#331, more specifically), Kubo answers pretty much the same question by saying that Yoruichi's cat transformation was something she herself created in order to sneak out of her clan's manor grounds whenever she pleased. It's nice to ponder how we can fit both answers together and how they work out with one another... or if it's simply an oversight by Kubo lol.
Ah yes just one of the things that Kubo forgot about and never later in the story.

When an author doesn't explain every literal thing in their world, it doesn't mean they forgot. They just don't need to waste time on the page.

It was the 2nd thematic intro (so not canonical) but nevertheless as a thought exercise, it was interesting seeing cat form yourichi break off soi fongs sword. This probably isnt reliable considering she struggled even in human form, but it does make you wonder to what extent her abilities are compromised as a cat.

Due to the fact that much of Bleach specifically is inspired off of the path of Samsara in Buddhist/Hindu beliefs, with the "6 realms". While in recent years it has been debated more which realms represent what, because of the lore involving "Hell" in bleach that we have been presented with(at this point in time), what can be undeniable is that the one realm we have seen the least of is that of the "Animal Realm" or that of the "beasts". Kubo's wordage here for the Shihoin's is matched by the same way he spoke of Komamura, both are said as "Beasts" and I think that shows. I can't think of any point in time the Animals or Beasts have been truly talked about in Bleach. There may be something in Burn the Witch with the dragons, but haven't watched or read enough of that to say either way, or nessisarily if the dragons are closer to hollows or something else. While we probably know only slightly more about Hell, it just hasn't had any presence at all in the anime or the original bleach outside of that movie and a part in the very first arc of bleach. So, the only realm which comes close in obscurity is that of the Silbern and the "Royal Realm", which outside of a little bit we mostly just know that as where the Quincies were based and a few other tidbits, yet this is also the realm which typically gets conflated with the Asura Realm(for good reason from the identity fo the Quincies themselves). To continue on with this thought we conventionally see the Soul Soceity as the Deva and Hueco Mundo as the Hungry Ghosts, and obvious earth is that of humans. While the cosmology of Bleach is very much its own thing, there are parallels here, but Beasts just haven't really been shown, but now apparently we not only have Komamura but also Yoruichi, because of how Kubo is wording things, this is interesting.
In the Samsara the Animals live among at least humans being separated by mind rather than space. They probably don't get their own world. Schatten Bereich or the Shadow Realm is part of Soul Society where the Sternritters hid which is similar to the Asura & Deva warring & living on the same level of existence.

So basically the Shihouin clan can become beasts and Yoruichi is a master of Shunko. The lightning cat form is a mixture of both that Urahara may have helped Yoruichi achieve, which is why he knows how to trigger it and can even do so against her will.
Bleach plays around with the concept in Chinese mythology of "higher" (shinigami) and "lower" (Hollow) souls as the two components of living humans that split on death. The lower soul (Po) is also called the "Animal Soul" because the higher soul is the seat of reason and virtue, and without it the lower soul is just a beast. My guess is both Yoruichi and Komamura's power comes from (re-)incorporating their lower soul, and their TYBW transformations are something akin to Hollowification/Resurrecion, which would explain why Kisuke specifically knows how to involuntarily induce them. (And also why Yoruichi wouldn't want him to, if her Thunder Goddess form is similar to the Full Hollow form Ichigo experienced fighting Ulquiorra.)
No real evidence for this, mind, it just fits the mythology Kubo's drawing upon, in my opinion. As far as the incorporation of Shunko, I'd file that under "things Kisuke will come up with in his basement if you leave him alone for too long", it really isn't a good idea to let that guy experiment on you.
If I had to guess, Chika Shihōin can turn into a panther.
My guess is that those who have been or come from the Beast Realm of Buddhist reincarnation may have leftover features or abilities they can use or access. Komamura's clan is not as adept or adjusted as the Shihoin clan and thus are in a mixed state between wolf and man vs Shihoin are masters at it and retain very little animal traits (their eyes are still cat like as well as their silent approach and nimbleness).

I think this form comes from Chika and in his tenure as the first captain of squad 2 he developed this ability and passed it on to his descendants or something like that.
In regard to Shunkō being need for Yoruichi to access her -fan service- Lightning Cat form, my theory is that Shunkō must of been created by the Shihōin clan in the first place. Evidence:
1) Shunkō is (like you said) a hand to hand based technique, hand to hand is the specialty of the Stealth Force.
2) The Shihōin clan has filled the role of Commander-in-Chief of the Stealth Force, this has been a tradition for generations which we learn during Suì-Fēng backstory.
3) The Stealth Force wasn't offically apart of the Gotei 13 until Yoruichi took over the Stealth Force as Commander-in-Chief while serving as captain of Squad 2. In order for the Stealth Force to comepete with Shinigami the Commander-in-Chief would likely be required to learn Shunkō to keep up with the Captain class Shinigami. (This would also mean Yoruichi was likely the first Shihōin to attain Ban-Kai in a while).
4) Both Yoruichi & her brother Yūshirō known Shunkō which means it was likely taught to them by their parent(s) in order for one of them to take over the Stealth Force.
5) We know Suì-Fēng didn't learn it from a textbook she made it up & didn't know it was a thing. This would make sense since Noble Families tend to keep knowledge to themselves (like Lightning Bending from Avatar: The Last Air Bender was keep within the Fire Nations Royal Family). This would make sense since even a captain like Suì-Fēng didn't know about it, so its likely a secret to the Shihōin's.
6) The Stealth Force uniform is designed with Shunkō in mind, again the Stealth Force until Suì-Fēng was under the control of the Shihōin clan.
etc... You get the idea.

I believe she never said she invented Shunko, simply she said the technique Soifon claimed to inventing it actually has already been named.
It could be a stress related transformation.

Could be the result of actually passing the ritual that Komamura of the original person of said family and the transformation ability would pass down to a specific descendant that would’ve become said beast for x reason

I have felt since that new show that he made came out that she was the only shinigami that had actual magic like wizard and witch magic.
She was a witch and what is more synonymous with witches than pointy hats and black cats.
I figured a magic talisman like the one from the Shihoin clan that gave ichigo flight. Or just a secret Shihoin technique.
It would have been cool if she would have passed on shunko to ichigo when she was training him or at least taught him the basics without necessarily telling him to see if he would get there on his own

Maybe there is a deeper lore to it. Notice how most of the Arrancars were based off of animals. Perhaps most souls take the shape of an animal and only Hollows and certain bloodlines can tap into it. Even Tousen who was a regular Soul Reaper took on the form of a cricket after undergoing complete Hollowfication. It's likely all just a big coincidence tho.
A. Ichigo's shinigami family had Getsuga Tensho as a power that got passed on. We know his father had it, and I think I heard that at least one other also could. So it makes sense that she also could have a family power. If so, I'd guess that the power is specific to the black cat form for all of them.
B. The Beast Clan pass down a curse instead (is there really a difference?). Do they have an opinion on this other family having a beast thing, but not being "cursed" with it? [You kind of answered this.]
C. Do the other noble families have similar powers? I have a vague idea that I'd heard that many of the Kuchiki family manifested similarly themed powers. I don't remember what that them WAS, though. Possibly, I'm pulling from some of the non-manga-based episodes of the anime. Like when Byakuka had to kill his imprisoned ancestor, and pretended to join the bad guys. Whatever that arc is called.
they could all be seen as curses. the final getsuga losing all your spirit powers, the man form losing the ability to become man again. it would make sense that the desecration of the soul king would have lead to them all getting some clan curse as well as their expanded powers.
I believe Yoruichi's thundercat form is something she created, most likely with the help of Kisuke, like how he created the 3-day bankai training. And seeing as she never used it in their battle with Aizen, it's also likely they created it during the time Ichigo lost his powers.
Its possible the shihouin clan might be related to the beast clans, same as Komamura. Maybe the curse of Komamura's clan isnt the beastly nature, but the lack of control over the form, and the Shihoin clan split off before that curse.
I think shunko might have been designed to mimic the power of that electric cat form. Kind of like how theres The Getsuga Tensho, and then theres using your sword to toss out a wave of spiritual pressure. Yoruichi invented shunko, so Shunko might be a way to tap into the same kind of power as the Thundercatgirl form without losing her mind, using her knowledge of kido and hakuda which, qs it happens, can be used by everyone else.

I had always banked on it being kinda joke from Kisuke. Teasing his childhood friend about her cat like nature so he pranks her by using a potion to turn her into a cat. But jokes on him she got a laugh out of it and forced him to not only let her do it on command but give her a different voice to then further prank others. But sure rare blood line thing is cool....I guess.
Never thought she was Kisuke and Yoruichi's kid and I ship them like crazy. Though I did always see them having a daughter.
This does make me wonder if yoruichi could teach sajin a way to turn back i know his is more based off of a curse but it would be really cool
After hearing Kubo say the Shihon clan can turn into beast. It makes me wonder if somehow there connected to the Beast clan in a shocking twist. But because theyre protegies and becoming a noble clan they can control it at will. Maybe there were cat humaniod forms in the beast clan, along with Kommamura's clan who are wolves. It makes me wonder if there are other clans and spicies in the beast realm since we've never explored this place in the manga/anime.
I speculate Chika who was in the original gotei can also transform perhaps into a panther, tiger, or some other kind of other being, but most likely some kind of breed of feline. Maybe Yorichi's unknown bankai makes her transform into a complete beast and she doesnt want to revert into a primal form since maybe she doesnt keep her mind intact once activated, similar to Zaraki's bankai were he becomes an uncontrollable oni like being that wants to destory everything in his path. Maybe she was given the noble clan's zanpukto and their bankai using this makes them all turn into their primal forms of their ancestors of the beast clan of feline humaniods. Maybe she gave up her zanpukto since her brother is now the head of the Shihon clan, once she left the soul society
similar to Komamura, its likely that Yorouchi ancestor were Demons like KOmamura in the form of a Cat
make sense as to why they have great talent for speed
Regarding her electric cat form, I just imagined that she's mixing what shes learned with her natural abilities. Enhancing her natural power like that. Probably even calls it half assed because she gives up her mind for all the other abilities the form offers.
I agree with others in the comments that the form could be a curse because maybe her family line devolves slowly over the course of their lives. Heavy speculation but I do feel like everyone who was involved in the Soul King's dismemberment/humiliation could be cursed somehow.

I like to think that one of their ancestors just found a way to become a small little fella and that passed down the clan's generations as a secret. It doesn't need to be complicated.

"Sinner" may be a key part and more now than ever that the hell chapter oneshot is out and seems like animals are a being thing, all the characters related to animals could be related to hell somehow. As far we have : Butterflies confirmed, the Sajin clan is highly likely, and then we have Shihouin clan, Yuyu Yayahara and Atau Rindo. (Only a theory for now but worth keeping an eye to this)

I wonder if Komomura's clan is an off-shoot of the Shihoin, who lost the ability to transform and thus ended up stuck as permanent animals or in a half-way form.
Or maybe the other way around, that the Shihoin started out the same as Komomura's clan, but conquered their curse and learned to transform freely between the shapes.
This might sound completely crazy and please keep in mind I'm writing this literally two minutes into the video so it might get brought up later but I wonder if the cat form or the Transformations or any of it in some way shape or form even though we don't see it or see her use it have something to do with her zanpakuto. That might sound stupid because again we never see her wield it she's never calls out any name or any command or anything of the sort she never says Bankai obviously, but it's another thing about her we never see or get an explanation of so I wonder if they're linked possibly. Grant that I couldn't even speculate as to how but still.
I guess if Chika Shihouin could also transform in a certain animal, it could be White Tiger . I don't know maybe because of his white hair
I've often wondered if Yourichi and Komamura's powers are related somehow. There's just so little information given about either. Also I know her Zanpauto was only a brief mention but I wonder about it a lot too. I wonder if it's a shared zanpakuto like the one for the Ise clan and so she left it with her family when she deserted.
Really wish we had seen Yoruichi fight in her cat form like in the opening.
Maybe it has something do with a Family Sword as it seems all Nobel families have a sword unique to that family
I guess Chika from a thousand years ago can transform into an animal as well and so it does fit even more that he became the founding captain of squad 2 and probably the stealth force.

I like to think the Shihoin clan Ancestor was the exact opposite of Komamura's clan. He was a cat who became human and stayed that way, but he and his descendants retained the ability to turn back if they so chose.
I also imagine that the Ancestor, or at least someone from their clan, was the one who invented Shunko. So perhaps on members of their clan can reach true mastery, which is what Yoruichi did in that form used against Askin. Think of it as a 3 level technique. Anyone who learns the ability can reach the first and second levels, but only a member of the Shihoin clan can reach the third.
Zanpaktus can have hereditary abilities passed down as well as naming conventions. So her zanpaktu spirit is probably a cat girl like Matsumoto. And she's probably just delving further into the car part of her soul like how ichigo can delve into his hallow part of his soul.
I like how Kubo combined her Shunko with her shapeshifting ability, even if the design is very risque. 😅

Maybe the cat transformation is what propelled the Shihouins to noble status? Similarly to how Nanao’s family become a minor noble house as they held the God-slaying sword, what if the Shihouin ancestor developed the technique and after a few more family members are able to replicate it, they were able to quantify it for status and power. If the old SS is anything like that Ywach and Yamamoto describe having an ally that turn into a cat would have been a huge asset.
