In today's video we look at a lesser known JDM car - the V36 Generation skyline. This one though is no ordinary Skyline, it is in fact a very rare 55th Anniversary edition, with some subtle mods - but is it worth finding?

Refreshing for a youtuber to actually know what JDM means. So many American youtubers think their left hand drive USDM cars are JDM, despite google and wikipedia telling them that they're completely wrong.
That's because both cars are on the same chassis, in addition to the Nissan Skyline being marketed as an Inifiniti outside of Japan.
@@RJLightning68 the point went straight over your head
@@anyau Wrong! I get the various do have changes depending what market that car is sold in. But Inifiniti has been in control of the Skyline since the V35 was introduced in 2002 for the 2003MY.
@@RJLightning68 A left hand drive Infiniti G37 is built to be sold for the USDM. The right hand drive Skyline Sedan V36 is built to be sold in JDM.
Yes, but underneath they're still the same chassis. Only difference between them are the market's regulations and the badging. I ain't debating the spec by any stretch but y'all keep telling me when they ain't the same car, when clearly that's not the case. lol

Keep em coming Brad
I have a selection of cars, so dont worry there are more to come
I’m in Australia and have a V36 Coupe Type S… I absolutely love it… much better than the R33 GTS-t I had…
Dunno what I did but thanks man.
People will be surprised to learn "Skyline" does not mean (a two-door) GT-R.
It never was, the Skyline was a 4/2-door sedan
Similar to BMW 3-series, you get them in 3 shapes, the Beemer you get in 4.
@@ldorman
You're correct. It is merely the distance from the Japanese market (and Oceanian, I believe) and video game culture which makes the Skyline appear only as GT-R in our collective minds.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X
The very first Skyline I saw was a 4-door sedan here in Europe
@@ldorman
Was it ever sold in Europe? I honestly do not know.
@@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X
The first NSX I saw as a kid was in Vienna and it was an Acura not a Honda.
Grey imports can be found in any country.
The same with RX-7 FD3S - the first one I ever sit in was RHD JDM imported via Germany and registered in Austria.
I had nismo s tune suspension on my old 200sx. A shock and spring set up with white line arbs. The coilover boys would have no chance down a b road in the same car. It was Judged so well 👍.
I have a G37 in the US, great car. People don't believe me when I tell them that it's technically a Skyline, since it's not a 2 door GT-R.
Real Skyline enthusiasts know ymwhat you have.
As with its predecessor the Infiniti Q50 and the Q60 those cars share parts with the GT R. Very underrated cars.
@@jaysimpson6857 After all they Skylines too.
Same, just don't go cringe and swap badges on it.
I feel like the People hating on this car is simply in denial that such abomination (in comparison to the GTRs) is also called a Skyline
I played Gran Turismo 4. This shit ain't new to me 😂
It's mainly cause is the US, where they sold a fuck load of these, it's the g35/g37/q40. Never been marketed as a skyline here. It's also known for being owned by douche bags out here lmao. Cheap, fast, fairly reliable, and most are on the 15th owner hitting their strawberry vape as they treat every stoplight like a dragstrip's tree.
@@m1l3s27 the US would be surprised to know there is a thing called Nissan Skyline Crossover too, basically Infiniti EX35.
A RWD crossover with 350Z engine. 🤣
But yeah because its an Infiniti, it suffers from the same crap every Infiniti suffers from.
It makes me sad because by the time the 12th generation came out, Nissan/Renault had started to allow the bean counters to control the company instead of just trying to make the best cars they could as they did in prior decades. This cars just a bit crap - later generations become utter crap.
@@m1l3s27 haha, I own an imported Coupe in Australia and I get that impression by watching CZcams videos about the car in the US. We don’t tend to modify them that much here, the guys that are into that go for Evos & WRX’s.
Living in NZ, I have seen many generations of Skylines, with many friends owning them over the years.
I live in Chch and own a 250gt!
Yoonseo Cho the 350 is quite a bit faster bro and same fuel economy 👍
NZ car scene looks incredible. I'm a toyota guy, got a jzx100 chaser myself and it seems like the majority of the import scene resides in NZ or AUS
Put the phrase “G37” in the title you’ll get 5x as many views. G fanboys never sleep.
Oh and Nissan have some of the coolest Pearl colours you’ll ever see on a factory car
Thanks J, you seem to be meeting more 'odd' things out on the road!
These are pretty common here in Canada, called the Infinity G37 over here.
@stephen stepanic They do come in Manual, my buddy has a G37S coupe in manual
@stephen stepanic saloon
Loved the look of the coupe version of these when they came out, thought it one of best looking cars ever (seriously!) and was somewhat obsessed. Interesting to hear how they drive. Thanks 👍🏾
If you ever find yourself in south Australia you can come and drive mine.
Wanted a first Gen coupe as a teenager but when I grew up I couldn't pick it over a pre face lift type s rsx
A mate of mine has an R31 GTS-R in the UK. Yes, you read that right. Bought from Nissan Motorsport Europe, it's a parts car in road trim brought over to support the racers, but was never used. It's a deeply silly and thoroughly entertaining vehicle! If only he'd get it back on the road :(
I’m a New Zealander, watching an Englishman talk about a JDM car, whilst watching this in Japan. I am Jack’s confusion.
And these things are EVERYWHERE here in NZ now they have reached the JDM import age. Probably more on the road here now than there are left where you are! They are, unfortunately like nearly everything Nissan has made since the Renault alliance, a bit shit - other than the engine.
@@Beer_Dad1975 I've got an 08 Nissan fuga 350gt here in NZ and agree with us. Theyre everywhere lol :)
@@fordfella801 Genuine question: have they become the sort of “Legacy” replacement? 20+ years ago, that’s all I ever saw, but haven’t been back in, well, 20 years…
@@arisaga822 nah bro still a shit load of legacys on the road. My first car was a 350gt fuga, now owned by my father. At the time they weren't common, much like the v36 skyline but now they are everywhere. Cheap and reliable, never had any problems with almost 300,000k on the clock.
@@Blarg217 Cheers, mate. And congrats on putting on more miles than it takes to get to the moon. :)
Very cool sedan. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, I'll try!
This is the 2nd generation Infiniti G in the US and Canada. The first was the G35, both Sedan and Coupe, the follow up being the G37. There was also a 2.5L V6 as well. The current Skyline is sold as the Infiniti Q50 Sedan and the Q60 Coupe, and from what I've read, isn't as good as the car being tested. I hope Nissan will continue with the Skyline series.
They're dropping it if I'm correct
Nissan continue to plumb new depths of crapness sadly.
@hon solo Yeah I remember reading about that and thinking it was nuts... given I'm a software engineer, and I know that there is ALWAYS some set of circumstances you don't think of or some bug you miss, having no physical linkage between the steering or the brakes would terrify the living shit out of me, more than the miniscule chance of being skewered would. Still I haven't seen anything since about Nissans randomly steering themselves off the road so maybe they did a really good job.
@hon solo That and it's barely better than the G37, which is 12+ years old.
I had basically the same car (Infiniti G35) in China. Yeah, the engine is the 3.5 V6, but almost everything in that car is almost identical to mine. They didn't change them much between the models
I haven't driven a 370 and didn't notice the whole interior trim on that 2012 model, but I think the metal trim is meant to give a rice paper look hence the slightly off white finish - at least it was in the first series 370gt. I have 2005 GT350 Coupe 6 speed and have had it for 15years - its a fantastic car, I have impul chip on the timing, impul stabalizer bars and fujitsubu cat back exhaust with 19' rim- it all came from Japan like that. Most standard skylines handle really well, its a common trait that's just inbuilt in their dna and developed from 50 years of racing in japan. In Aus in 2007 every 3 series would be easily beaten in a straight line and especially round corners - except for what was AUD 115K 335I twin turbo which even then only just out performed it. Ok you dont have the interior quality - but at twice the price here who gives a toss. Now of course you have hot hatches which are quicker for the same money - but for their time they were exceptional value for money and great feeling/handling cars. Brakes could be better, clutch and electronics too. But as a package it was extremely solid and as time has proven exceptionally reliable and cheap to maintain.
The blue tint on the windscreen is some throwback to 80s boyracers
you never disappoint with these shirts ngl 🤣
Most random shirt to date I think. Luv it.
A few to choose from here in Au starting at £7000 GBP. Also have Japanese buttons.
That's a lot for a shirt!
@@js00065 Hahahah. My sentence structure leaves a bit to be desired
The 2.5l v6 is to bypass the displacement tax in Japan. The fuel economy is actually almost the same as the 3.7.
As someone driving one I feel cheated
I feel quite uncultured as I had no idea this car existed
Not for US release. This is akin to a G37S in the states.
I have a 2005 Nissan Fuga which is basically a Skyline but a slight executive version with wood etc. Very similar and the 350Z engine in the 2005. Main thing I wish I could change is adding an LSD. Carwings is a system that only works in Japan (maybe Infiniti one works in USA) and it calls someone who can set the Satnat etc. I think Lexus has a similar thing.
The Nissan Fuga isn't really a Skyline when its a lot bigger than that car. The Fuga is a 5 series size, and the Skyline sedans are 3 series size.
@@smilepermile8165 It is the same car underneath. Just slightly different interior and exterior styling etc. I have a fuga and my brother in law has the skyline. Car manufactures don't waste money, that is why all these cars have to be based on the same car for around the world.
@@ilovetool1 Agreed. I previously drove 2007 G35S(Skyline) and my wife drove 2010 M35X(Fuga). Now, my son drives that Skyline and my daughter drives that Fuga and both are still very reliable.
PS: We also plan to buy a Q60(2dr skyline) or 400Z next year in addition to my current 2017 GSF...
Funnily enough there is one where I live (or there was 5 years ago) never knew they were so rare
I've seen a few g37 saloons for sale in UK that look really interesting, some were 4x4 versions. And at around £10000 they look like a tempting partner to my 350z, it's just the high tax and 20's mpg that's holding me back as a daily.
I got like 17mpg in mine 💀
@@LifeOfTuners damn, that's like a Mazda RX-7.
Like that, very nice daily driver 👍
These affordable and in many ways big saloons were such a typical Japanese and American concept in days past. I think they're far more interesting than any BMW, Merc or Audi saloon of the last 20 years and I don't care if the materials in those are a little nicer to touch.
These were not affordable, lol... The G was marketed as a premium brand rival and costs a pretty penny to buy and mantain. Less expensive than the germans, yes, but still closer to them than to a mazda or vw. I had one of these. A shot damper cost me a grand to fix. You have to replace the pair and realign. Everything from brake pads to a single oil change at Infiniti dealers cost you as much as any german. Plus they're way more inefficient mileage wise. Very nice cars but in no way affordable if you want to properly mantain them. Cheaply mantained ones really show. They're in awful condition. Lowered, bumpy ride, filled with rattles, worn down interiors... Just because the engine is still running doesnt mean the car is worth shit anymore.
Informative; thank you.
I have a 2007 Skyline 370gt sp coupé with the 5 speed automatic which in addition to the larger wheels and brakes has 4 wheel steering. It’s not a sports car, but as a comfortable Gt it works quite well and is different to the normal German alternatives. I have just changed the navigation to UK maps and English screen menus. One nice feature is the electric memory steering column adjustment that moves the instrument cluster up and down as well.
I'm pretty sure that was the 350GT, no? I have an Infiniti G35 the same age, and would expect it to have the same engine.
@@LiamNI Definitely a CV36 Skyline not the CV35. Japanese market car first registration was October 2007.
Yes, the 4 wheel steering makes all the difference.
Have the 350 version, with predictive cruise control as well, fantastic 👍
Fantastic! Do the 2021 Evora GT410!
This car was so much better than its successor
I have an 09 coupe. Best car I've ever had.
Yet again shirt game at 100% 😎👍🏼🔥
"rocking horse doodoo" -- Great phrase.
Hey! I’m from Aus I’ve got a Red Skyline 370GT Coupe 🙏🏼 Can squeeze quit a bit of power out of it all engine.
Love the shirt 🙌
I used to import jdm cars into australia in the 90s and i have this car in a crossover version and its a better car then all the jdms i imported including the r32 gtr.The throttle responce is amazing unlike those turbo lag cars.It handles better its just better in every way except the old jdm cars have more potential for mods but so what this naturally aspirated v6 is a million times more fun
@1:14 Eclectic indeed, even when it means wearing a shirt that looks like it was made out of the fabric of some kid's pyjama. ^^
I had a G37S sedan I really loved. Changing the springs and more critically the dampers transforms the handling. The bigger brakes are much nicer but wear very quickly (I was changing them every 20K miles). It ultimately met its demise at a track day. It was a flawed machine- the transmission was great on the street but terrible at the track, and I thought the steering was very vague (though that might have been tires- Conti DWS06s are known for being squishy). I miss it but wouldn't buy another one.
Nissan has really mishandled the Infiniti brand.. Back in the late 2000's Infiniti was giving BMW a run for its money and was pushing out some great models. I don't know if Nissan can save the brand at this point, I only see it as a re-badged sub brand now if the dealership base manages to survive
@hon solo a decent number of people do. They are Z's with extra doors. A couple of mods and they are ready. My mistake was overdriving and not using the right brake fluid.
@hon solo respectfully have you ever tracked a car? We are not talking endurance racing here... just typical short session HPDEs. My G would have been fine if I hadn't over driven and if I hadn't used cheapo street brake fluid. It never overheated or w/e over the 20 minute sessions. All it needed was coilovers, pads/rotors/high temp fluid, wider wheels/tires and all the engine/trans/diff fluids done and it was good.
Worst comes to worst you can take it easy.... don't go to the track on the hottest day of the year.... let off early and brake softer... etc etc. It's a track day, not a time attack that determines the fate of humanity lol.
@hon solo Is an M3/Guilia QF etc not a family sedan? And nobody is talking about going slow.... just going maybe 7-8 tenths instead of 10/10ths, which is still waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy faster than you should go on the street, especially in something very fast. You can still learn a lot, push your car and have fun without going to the absolute limit.
@hon solo people track 330is with minimal prep. You don't need an M3 to go to the track
Oh this is the infinity G35 over here in USA 🇺🇸
G37. The G35 has a 3.5 V6 and fewer gears in the auto box.
How uncommon are manual versions of this car in Euro/Asia? In the States, I’ve driven a manual G35 & G37 sedan before but never seen anymore manual G sedans after that
@stephen stepanic same as us then. My dad was looking for a g37 to check out, wanted a 4 door manual, ended up only finding a coupe with the stick. California circa 5 years ago.
I actually have a 370GT Type SP coupe with the same GTC01 wheels, its white and fairly well modded but twins!!! lol
The 2.5l v6 is to bypass the displacement tax in Japan😀
Nice car some what better than most of it's competition plus reliable
I have g37s sedan manual 2012 not the anniversary edition but has big brakes adjustable side bolsters driver seats .steering was good already but when I changed the front sway bar the whole handling improved to sharp precise and the carbon steering was never a option in these that's and after market add on
Where do we get the English buttons? I've been looking a while haha
Another similar weird Japanese car, although slightly different in that we could actually get it UKDM is the Suzuki Kizashi. It seems like it has similarities to this skyline in that its cheap with a hint of premium has a fairly big N/A engine, looked interesting similar to the skyline, was according to Jason Camissa and Matt Farah a surprisingly good drive and from the early 2010's. I have seen just 3 Kizashi''s (2 of which likely sightings of the same car) on the road in the last 10 years, that I can remember. It would be interesting to get one in a video if you haven't already.
Kizashi in AWD too. I'm not sure what he'll think of the CVT that those came with though. They did have a paddle shift to play with fixed ratios for fun on backroads but otherwise its a good DD.
FWD only Kizashi had a manual option.
I have the v36 with the 3.5 v6.
I agree with your sentiments on the interior quality and how it drives.
It's a good car in most ways, nothing really wrong with it. But it doesn't excite.
I've been considering getting into a 130, 135 or 335 .
you should they are better than g37 and tuning potential is there. I’ve had couple of g37 race me and I always beat them in my 335.
@@shiftautomotive854 You wouldn’t beat a V6 Infiniti/Nissan Q50 or Q60, with the Q50 being the predecessor of this V36 Skyline.
@@jaysimpson6857 q50 and q60 are slow bro only the q50 s will put up a fight.
@@shiftautomotive854 The Q60 Red Sport has 400 bhp and does 0 - 60 mph in 4.4 sec, hardly slow and over a second faster than a BMW 335. Not sure about the Q50 Red Sport but I know it’s the same engine. The Q50 hybrid has/had more engine torque than most Audi R8’s, again it’s a ridiculous amount of power and with its AWD system that’s used in the Nissan GT R it’s easy to understand why a 335 is slower in every regard.
Please do a review of the Infiniti Q50 hybrid. Its a performance hybrid which does 0-100km/h in under 5secs and its as quick as some Porsche 911 ingear acceleration.
Similar is an understatement this car is just a g37 sedan here in the us...same specs etc just different badges

They are common in Japan and in Oz & NZ popular as second hand imports.
Come to LA, I see like 20 of these a day. They were never really updated. When the first came to the US, they really gave the Germans a run for their money, kinda like the Hyundai Genesis brand's G70 today. Then they just let it languish.
