his Oscar-winning film begins prior to the outbreak of World War II. Nick Condon (James Cagney), the American editor of a Tokyo newspaper. www.millcreekent.com
Actually James Cagney was quite adapt at old school bare-knuckle fighting, Sabota(Savate) and old School Judo. He earn a 2nd degree black belt, and kept up his practice right to his early seventies. Indeed he was one few actors who were Martial-Artists. To that list we must add actor Robert Ryan, who was a boxer, and a wrestler.
I THINK CAGNEY WAS THE FIRST AMERICAN ACTOR TO USE EASTERN MARTIAL ARTS. JAMES CAGNEY WAS A MAN OF MUCH DIMENSION HE COULD ACT, DANCE, SING, AND WAS WELL READ WITH DEPTH OF MIND.MY FAVORITE ACTOR.INDEED.
This flick is definitely watchable, it's fun to watch Cagney's big fight scene, during which he looks every bit the tough guy when trading straight punches but a little rolly polly incompetent with anything that approximates martial arts. Sylvia S shows her exotic beauty as a young star.
Jack Bachagalupe I think it’s less to do with any lack of competence and more to do with the limitations of camera work/editing of the time Cagney was known as a tough guy in real life, and could easily hold his own in a street fight
James Cagney was a black belt in judo and a skilled boxer. If it was shot with today's equipment, it would look better. Oh yeah, there were no stunt doubles in that scene.

@HR Pufnstuff Respect for the Japanese people disrespect for the militaristic government.
There was a series in the 30s that used Judo. It was Mr. Moto. Peter Lorre played Mr. Moto.
