John Halloran played the villian Japanese police captain who fought James Cagney. Mr Halloran in real life was James Cagney's Judo teacher, a stuntman/actor and los angeles policeman. James Cagney was a real life golden gloves competitive boxer in his youth and a Judoka. So we see him demonstrate his Judo & golden gloves boxing background in this action film. Golden gloves boxing is an amatuer boxing division in the U.S. Many pro boxers began as golden gloves. This is an outstanding video breakdown of an excellent Judo action film. There's another old Judo action film you make like called Tokyo Joe starring Humphrey Bogart.

@@Chadi No. The first films to feature Judo in fight sequences was the Peter Lorre "Mr. MOTO" series and there was another film from 1943 that featured Boxing VS Karate in "Under the Rising Sun" Mike Mazurki and Robert Ryan were the fighters. All films are pretty good. So seek them out.

Great upload. I like that you show the throws in the film and break it down.
A movie I recommend you can review is called "Sanshiro Sugata". I think you would really enjoy this one as it is historically accurate for the most part. It was produced in 1943 by Akira Kurosawa. The story of this film is based on one of the four guardians of the Kodokan; Saigo Shiro is the main character. Shiro seeks to learn Jujutsu but is instead introduced to Kodokan Judo.
The villain of this movie is based on newaza master Mataemon Tanabe; the man responsible for submitting multiple Kodokan judokas on the ground. Tanabe's victories over Kano's students is the main reason why Judo has newaza. After the students defeats Kano asked Tanabe to show and teach his style of Jujutsu which was ground oriented to the Kodokan in the late 1890's.
In the film there are several schools that compete against each other and the winning school would be chosen to teach their style of Jujutsu or Judo to the local police department. Very interesting and historically accurate as this actually did take place I think in the late 1880's - early 1890's.

The old school atemi waza displayed in the fight scenes preserved a glimpse of early Judo. This movie was filmed during the 2nd World War. The front flick kick lead followed by outward edge of hand strike. The heel of palm strike. The rabbit chop. The kick to escape the arm bar was interesting. Then James Cagney transitioned to his golden gloves boxing & New York city street fighting background to surprise and confuse his adversary after the Judo fight progresses. Great film.

One thing to point out was that James Cagney was cast against type in this movie. He was the hero in this film, when he usually played, and was most famous for, crazy killer gangster roles.
There's an old joke about a Jimmy Cagney love scene is when Jimmy let's the other person live.

Patriotic films (this and Yankee Doodle Dandy, for example) were important for Cagney not only to inspire home morale but also to fend off right-wing rumors about his liberal, political sympathies.

Jimmy Cagney's Japanese judo combatant is Jack O'Hallaran, who also taught judo to Cagney in real life. There was another Japanese fellow who taught Jimmy as well. Judo Gene LeBell also went on the mat with Cagney. Jimmy was a lifelong judoka. He also played romantic leads and was in musicals and comedies. He didn't always play a gangster. O'Halleran taught Judo in Hollywood and LeBell was a student of his. Judo Gene LeBell was my teacher for judo and Grappling at Gogor's Hayastan school in North Hollywood..

I used to do your favorite choke in jujitsu competitions in the old days because to be straight up they were hiding information. I get bootleg video cassettes from Brazil and there was a guy that was very good doing this move from the back. I’d also take a arm with my leg before I did this move. As a blue belt it worked well. It always works well.

A lovely presentation. Much of the action is done by Cagney, but I assume some of the more violent bounces are done by a stunt double. There are several moments when head position and hair blocks view of his face, then he reappears after an edited splice.

I actually watched this movie just a few months back, after a tip from one of the commentators. Kinda typical movie from the period. I liked the fight scene too, if it weren't for the lousy movie striking. If Cagney had experience in Savate/BF, it doesn't show. But the Judo was technical. I doubt any of the two would just get up and keep fighting after getting thrown so many times on tables and whatnot, though. :)
