Hollywood insisted during these days that a gangster could be shown as sympathetic and at times even humorous, but in the end, he had to go down. Cagney and other actors of the time agreed.

      Stop writing nonsense.
James Cagney is an icon of gangster movies, but he's not the best.
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci have had more careers in gangster movies and their movies have been classics.
Also don't forget another icon of gangster cinema like George Raft.

@capitanfuturo594 It's his opinion and it's a legitimate opinion. I'd put Pacino up there, but certainly not Dirty Grandpa. Old Dirty Grandpa has taken himself out of all such acting conversations with all of the crappy films he's thrusted onto the movie-going public.

Public Enemy, Little Ceasar, Angels with Dirty Faces, Roaring Twenties, G-Men, White Heat, Key Largo, High Sierra, etc, and the best actors of the era, Cagney, Bogart, Robinson, Muni, Raft, Garfield, those were great days for cinema.

Tar heelz. He obviously got shot in the body too. In a shootout at close range against a roomful of armed thugs who fired back, he would obviously take some hits before his opponents went down. The head wound was probably a graze wound (applied by the makeup department for effect). If the bullet had penetrated to the brain, he probably would have died instantly inside the storefront. Anyway, it's all Hollywood, set up to tell a story.
