DJI Mavic Air 2 Range Test - A Disappointing FAIL (including DJI FLY app crash)

- This is my first attempt at a RANGE TEST with the DJI MAVIC AIR 2. See what happens when I attempt to travel Upriver at the Historic River Mill Park in Occoquan, VA. The DJI Fly app also CRASHES while inflight. This is not the first time my app crashed so hopefully the latest Mavic Air 2 Firmware Update has corrected the DJI Fly app crashing problem.

Still can reach 10km range latest version 2022..??
Thanks for the info, cheers from Jersey🍻
I love how people give these dramatic headlines to get them to watch their videos.
This was not a fail.. this was arrange test that was fine except the fact that the geofence kicked in because of the height restrictions..
Your phone might not be compatible
Also did you follow the rules in the manual that specifically said shut off your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and even use airplane mode before you take off..
I guess most people don't read the manual
Thank you for your input. However, this was a fail in my book because I miscalculated the height restriction based on the AGL relative to where the drone was. As you can see, my launch point was about 110 feet lower than where the drone was and I didn't realize there were power lines in my path. I could have gone lower but didn't want to.
Also, In reference to the dramatic title, CZcams is filled with them, which includes the big channels. The point is to get people to click on your video and as a smaller growing channel, you need an egde on a very competitive platform. The title was dramatic, but wasn't a lie.
@@ChadB
But most people would think it's a fail by the mavic Air 2 which is the real reason why they would be watching..
@@ChadB dont open ur mouth too much....ha ha ha....
Thanks for the great video :)
Loved your video man and then colours wow🤟👍
Thank you.
Awesome Work 👍
This is a great drone I have olny had 2 flights so far but very impressive. Great flight Chad . Congratulations on 1000 sub .
Thanks Ryan. It is pretty nice
What were your Transmission control settings? E.g auto 2.4/5ghz? Did you turn off WiFi and/or Bluetooth on your phone
Signal was set to auto and didn't turn off bluetooth and wifi
Im glad it wasnt really an issue with the new bird. I thought from the title OH NO not another defective air 2.
It seems to me that the new antenna is very directional.
From my experience anyway.
Great flight just subbed. ( thought I had you already).
✌💛😀
Great scenery thanks for posting.
Awesome video Chad! I've had the app crash a few times while flying with a screen recorder on. Never had it happened with it off. So I cant say one way or another of it's the recorder or not, but who knows. Can't wait for the other range test. This was still a beautiful place to fly. Glad you guys had a good time! 👍😃
Thanks Josh...yeah it has also hadn't to me when I wasn't recording the screen so definitely a bug somewhere.
I have the air2 as well. What are the black and white bars on the screen recording? I’ve noticed them on my iPhone when flying and I don’t know what is causing them? Any insight?
Disregard; I just found out that they are overexposure warnings which can be turned on or off in the app.
Yup!...
Hey guys,
Great to see you two working together. I’ve watch both of you and enjoy your insight. As a newbie you guys, make this hobby easier and way more faceted based...👍😎👍
Thank you. We're happy that you find value in our videos.
Great footage ty 😎👍👍👍 i just got the spry+ but thinking about the air 2 also👍
Oh the Spree. I heard that was good too.
Nice video, Thanks!
Very nice video Chad !
Thanks Daniel! There will be another range test soon...
brunch time in the Chilcotin after a morning bootcamp so that means break time!
looking forward to chilling with you all on this Memorial Day weekend,
hoping things work themselves out as I am commenting before watching,
nonetheless Chad, bless up and good vibes to you and your family eh!
have a beauty day good sir!
8^)
Thanks Chili Bu.
cant wait for my mavic air 2.enjoy flying!
Thanks..
What do those zebra bars mean on the screen?
I began getting them on my Mavic Air 2 recently for no apparent reason.
It's the overexposure warning. You can switch it off in the camera settings
Beautiful!
I think I am your 1000th subscriber 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Thank you for getting me over that hump.
Well done, Thank You.
Wow! You should have checked the map in the app before you launched in the area and saved yourself disappointment.
Even though I was there with you I didn’t know it restricted you that way. I thought you just hit the no fly zone wall. Didn’t know it was the ceiling but just think if we had positioned ourselves up top there and flew down. No issue there 👍
Yeah...I probably could have taken it lower, but didn't want to risk being in a situation were I needed to go higher and couldn't. Also, didn't want to be too close to the wires. I look forward to the next one.
@@ChadB The scenery was beautiful. I definitely have to get out more. Question, I thought I saw a video on the Mavic Air 2 where 4K was now supported in quick shots. Can you confirm?
DJI has over stepped the Legal Authority again.
Nice work bro 🇨🇭🇱🇨👍👍👍
Thanks Gregory.
My first drone and I just bought mavic air 2 and only goes about 2000 feet before it tells me that remote controls week very disappointed
Great flight over the river and its dams, very beautiful scenery, and narration. Thanks for sharing Chad. I also think you did well not trusting these power lines...
Thanks Blueskyver. I hope you're enjoying your Mini.
@@ChadB Thanks, yes I do and also my MA2 which I'll still need to compact in a single video czcams.com/play/PLukN19iFLHn6aLN3Iu1AhpYHkFEp_OKq5.html
Great vid...
Thank you
Great video, I’m in Williamsburg Va. I’m getting my MA2 tomorrow.
It's a great quad. Enjoy!
Nice video 👍
Thank you
Does the drone stop at 400 feet by design, or can I full send her 500 meters?
You can set you maximum height up to 1600 ft. I initially had mine set to 400 ft
Good review my friend:)
Thank you.
I bet you hit 1,000 subs by the end of the weekend! Keep up the great work.
Why couldn't you go a bit lower? You seemed to be way above the trees.
Thanks..Yeah, thought about that, but didn't want to cross the wires so close or risk getting in a situation where I needed to go higher and couldn't. I Will do another one very soon in a less restrictive location.
Why you don’t use the original cable?
Was just testing that one out. Also, I can use it when using a table mount
so, to sum it, you are entering some type of restricted zone, flying at a low altitude of 50 feet or so, with a tone of trees between you and the signal, flew for almost 2 miles, and you still call it a fail range test?
enchodus it’s not a fail this guy is flying near a restricted zone so what did he expected lol.
Yes, I called it a fail because I knew the restricted area was there, but miscalculated the altitude because I was flying uphill and my home point was over 100 ft lower than where the drone ended up. I could have gone lower to get under the height restriction, but was uncomfortable with it because I didn't want to get in a situation where it prevented me from rising to a higher altitude if needed. I didn't want to go too low to where I would lose signal and the aircraft would initiate automatic RTH and couldn't rise high enough in altitude to avoid hitting trees, cables or a side of a mountain.
@@ChadB take off location is always the base point for altitude right? I still don't see how this is a fail. I get what you are saying but it's not a fail, it's doing what it should. Anyways, great vid and beautiful location.
Thanks...The AGL is based on the altitude relative to where the drone is. Here's an article that explains it. In my case I was going uphill. www.dronepilotgroundschool.com/kb/if-im-taking-off-from-on-top-of-a-mountain-or-tall-building-how-does-the-400-ft-agl-maximum-altitude-rule-apply-when-i-fly-out-into-the-valley-or-away-from-the-building/
QC guy is really observant guy 😁 Joke on a side I hate to see that software limitations. What phone had you used? I would like to see Dji allowing Go4 also to be used on Air2. Probably much more mature software all-around and and definitely more options to play with
Yeah...I was using the Samsung Galaxy S9
@@ChadB Definitely no hardware bottleneck on your side. Even with screen recording. Seems that Fly app need more polishing 😁
If your app is crashing often, then I suspect that your mobile device (Tablet or phone) is to blame. What device are you using? Android or iPhone? How old is the device? That has been my experience in the past with apps crashing.
I use the Samsung Galaxy S9. Only 2 years old
@@ChadBHmmm. That shouldn't be a problem. I haven't had the app crash on my Huawei 8 inch tablet .
Did you update the app lately!
Yeah...this was done before the most recent update.
That’s a beautiful place to fly. Thank You for sharing
Thanks John. It is pretty nice. I will be coming back
Just realized my aunt is down the road from you in Dale City!
Cool..have to come out and fly one day
Nice video, i just got the MA2 and don`t live that far from this park, i may have to pay that park a visit with my drone.
Great, Its a cool place to fly
Nice flight, Chad. The Air 2 seems to be the perfect drone for just under 1000 USD. 👍👌
Thanks. Yes...I think this is the one to buy in 2020
Excellent flight, but I don't like the fact you don't have control over the speed of the camera...the movement is much too quick.
Thanks...that is true. But I've heard that DJI may send a firmware update and add a gimbal speed control. Lets hope they do.
Enjoyed your flight. Too bad drone can’t give actual altitude below, but has to base it off take off point. Can see the possibility of some problems along the way.
Set the MAX FLIGHT ALTITUDE to the max of 500m. We'll never need to go that high, but it's great for situations like this where we launch from below the surrounding area (minus the Altitude restricted area).
Cool...will do.
Good drone , Chad ! Good fly
Thank you.
That did not suck, that was actually pretty cool that it will not allow us to fly in those zones.
Thanks...yeah it did want it was supposed to do. I will try again soon.
IT? Who is the FAA? They are in charge, NOT DJI.
Lucky to get a mile in the uk
1.7 miles is impressive!!!! I have an android phone and it has crashed several times. Nice test:)
Thank you. yeah they need to fix whatever bug it has.
Great Spot
Thanks Bryan.
Did you bother to check if your phone was supported for the DJI fly app
I already know my phone should support the app. Samsung Galaxy S9. This is a problem with the app. Also, this is why DJI sent out a Firmware update to correct the problem.
Chad never a fail when you get good footage !
You're right about that Bill! Thanks!
@@ChadB facts💯
Cool video... I just got my DJI Mavic Air 1... It would stress me OUT to fly it that far out of just fear of what if something bad happens.. LOL A crying grown man over a lost drone couldn't be a pretty sight hehehe
Lol...yeah you have to warm up to it first
Great flight Chad! That is some beautiful country. 👍
Yes it is. Finally able to get out and discover other flying spots in the area.
Next time be low look down going over water fall very good drone
my mom lives in Dale city we all may have to get together and fly. i'm in waldorf md
I’m new here and in Woodbridge area. Just got the MA2 and enjoying to learn and explore new spots. If you ever trying to link up and fly I would be down.
👍
Sorry, but I missed the disappointing fail. WTH?
I would say it’s the android phone and non Dji cable giving you the issues. Nice video but not sure about the bearded guy 🤣
Could be the phone. It has crashed on me before while using the DJI cable.
Chad B. Most companies seem to be IOS focused and I’ve never had a problem with any drone app while using Apple
like
The height restriction is preset to 500 feet, you can make it go up 1600 feet but that would be illegal (if you care).
