- The fly-on-the-wall documentary broadcast on Granada in May 2000 covering Chester City's turbulent 1999-2000 season which ended in relegation from the Football League. Much of the focus is on the controversial American owner/manager Terry Smith, spotlighting his fallout with former boss Kevin Ratcliffe and the desperate attempts by Ian Atkins to pull the club out of danger in the closing weeks of the season.
Please note that this video contains swearing. - Sport
Interesting documentary. Unfortunately Terry Smith's bad judgement and arrogance sealed Chester's fate in 1999/00. A quote from Wikipedia: "In 2003, a British court ordered Chester City to repay £300,000 in unpaid loans to Smith and his family. However, Smith still wanted to help the club, and so he accepted a settlement of far less than half of that amount." If it's true, and I assume it is, it was a nice gesture, he didn't have to do that.
I actually think Terry was quite likeable and probably wanted the best for Chester.... However he was also deluded and egotistical and that's a recipe for disaster
Cringe, how could a player sit in that changing room and listen to him without laughing.
Anybody else here because of quickly Kevin? Haha
Graham says hit Les
😂 yes mate . The podcast makes this doc so much better
Yes me!
Do what ya do for ya clubs

A few of my friends and ex team mates were in the chester squad at this time. They were in utter disbelief at this clown. Some of the shit he used to come out with and try and pull. If if wasn't so sad and ridiculous it'd be hilarious. You couldn't write it. They kept wondering where the hell Jeremy Beadle was hiding.
Doomed for relegation anyway. Failing club prior to anything in this video. At least you have a funny story now. Yeah this guy is weird and egotistical but this was a bankrupt club full of guys that look like my accountant before any of this.
the look of abject misery crossed with befudlement on every players face at all points in this video
With myself being a younger supporter I wasn’t old enough to really understand what happened during the mad Terry Smith era, but certainly have a clearer understanding now. Thank you for posting this video.
One man's descent into madness
I just laugh when he says “ballgame” ⚾️
You can tell the players just don't want this chap in the dressing room. I mean it's embarrassing, it's awkward to watch
"HE KNOCKED HIM DOWN LINESMAN... GOOD GOD" 😂😂😂😂 This guy.
great jawwwwwb men, great jawwwwb
Kids seeing this would be shocked to know that Man City was once low down in the league pyramid and playing the likes of Chester City, Wrexham pre-Deadpool, Bury, Kidderminster Harriers, Scunthorpe, etc.
Automatic penalty
"I can't believe... That was an automatic penalty" 😂😂😂😂😂 hilarious.
Automatic penalty.
COME ON MEN
Steve Dresser 3 captains
"that's the most pitiful effort I've ever dang seen...."
IN THE HOLE
I was a Carlisle fan in that away end when we scored deep into injury time with only 9 men. Still one of the best away days ever
This is bizarre. Thanks Quickly Kev
Watching these old docs about failing football teams. I think Terry Smith had good intentions he went about the community tried to Garner more support, got the club out of administration at that period and did the best he could with only youth players and overall a crap team that just didn't perform. His training seemed more on point with six hour sessions showing he wanted to motivate and get more out of the players.
Chester were doomed for relegation anyway regardless but I think the guy had good honest intentions. He did make the mistake of saying they'd be in division 1 after 3 seasons but other than that I reckon he did his best and the fans should have been less hard on him as he did help with finances. He was also offered a pay out wasn't he? But he said he'd only take half and rest went back into the club.
I think owners deserve more respect than they often get from these fans. Glad that Chester still has a club and playing at a decent level (NLN).
Terry Smith's heart was in the right place, but his brain was up his arse with regards to football. He tried to impose NFL tactics to football (multiple on-field captains etc) and it was a disaster. Plus it was him who sold the club to that crook Stephan Vaughan.
Possibly the most phenomenal thing I've ever watched
Whose here because of quickly Kevin?

We got to get “scores” 😂
This just made me feel sombre. What a horrible way for a club to lose its league status! All because if the actions of one egotistical bastard!
This is from 2000? Why does it look like it was filmed in the 80s
I vaguely remember watching this. I always like watching how the clubs in the lower leagues fare. I think Terry's heart was in the right place, but without any experience,it was doomed to failure .
I remember this being on Granada at the time. What an absolute basket case. Even as a Wrexham fan, I can't help but feel for Chester having Terry Smith then the even worse Vaughan's straight after. Club killers.
In all honesty a bloke like Clive Woodward would have made for an interesting football manager. He certainly had the insight, intelligence, and knows his football. This bloke is well intentioned, but a true fish out of water. He clearly knows fuck all about the game.
Make that goal, then we’re gonna get another one after that!
I cannot believe this was 1999/2000!? Thought it was 1990-94 MAX!
5 percent more come on just 5 percent more I want three goals in the first half
I was there when chester vs Everton preseason he said will be in the Premier league 3 years
Has Smith been interviewed since about his time there?
Is there anything more excruciating than Americans talking "soccer" vernacular? This documentary is like a spoof comedy show.
Cheers 4 putting this on mate had it on vhs years ago. Wot a bellend coco was☺☺
"You just work, work and it will happen" This is so American :D
The American wasn’t their biggest problem. The goalkeeper was
Terry Smith was better than Vaughan
I use to have a nodding homer in my old car 1:06
Terry Smith owned the GB Spartans American Football team, 15,000 at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield (free tickets lol). Happy Days.
this is one of the funniest documentaries i have ever seen the music that chimed in was perfect.
Great soundtrack
What a clown he was knew nothing about football let us pray in the “locker room “ can imagine the players thoughts.
A clown that fixed their debt problems, so say what you will but he helped the club have the ability to survive for years to come.
Prayer is done in every locker room in America. It's a culture difference but I guess Englanders are more of the nihilistic atheist complainer types. Honestly having something to complain about was probably more fun for you than to watch a team go bankrupt and get relegated anyway.
@@lostinthejungle3917 did you reply to someone else’s comment that you weren’t here to argue??
23:30 this dude was fuckin mental nothing is wrong really???
That lords prayer really worked before the Orient game 😂
Edit: weirdest eyebrows I've ever seen.
Honestly better looking than that cartoon profile pic of you homie. Keep that beard long to cover up that hideous chin.
@@lostinthejungle3917 😘
@@cosmicbaggy Chill man. Not here to argue.
Absolute headcase he was, not a clue at all.
My mate bought Terry Smiths house ... what a spread
He's got the tactics of your underpaid math professor that coaches the high school team on the side.
Anyone here because of caught offside?
It got worse 10 years later.
The worse thing he did was appoint himself manager.
4-4-2 brought me here
I'm an American and I'm just laughing at how out of place this guy sounds.
Think City beat Chester 4-1 in the FA Cup around that time at the Deva Stadium MCFC
first half, three goals
Think he was a nice guy but just way out of his depth.
Terry looks like brad guzan
More like Kasey Keller
Jester an absolute joke over last 20 years or so. Always mismanaged.. Harry McNally was a good manager though I had to add.. SWA
Pete Marr Grown man commenting on a video nothing to do with his club, calling us Jester, and we’re not even rivals 🤣
Who’s here from JJ’s talk about it on the caught offside podcast?
18 years on still in Non league .

All these years later……nowts changed ……and how many managers later…….20 plus .?
A small football club in Derbyshire, England and a yank, what could possibly go wrong lol In all seriousness, I think Terry Smith underestimated the British football culture. He was naive in thinking, you could save the club from bankruptcy, build bridges with the local community, maintain the club's traditions, spend money on players and invest in youngsters, and the fans will respect you for it. Wrong. Maybe it's different in America, but the fans in Britain have short term memories. If the team isn't performing, they'll direct all their anger and abuse at the manager and the chairman. The abuse Terry received from supporters was unjustified. His knowledge was questionable, but his heart was in the right place and he showed plenty of passion for the club.
Derbyshire? Chester is in Cheshire 😆
Since when has Chester City been in Derbyshire? Even saying it's in England isn't 100% correct. Half of the stadium is in England and the other half is in Wales.
derbyshire? Hahahaha
Derbyshire? Its in Cheshire you whopper 🤣
🤣🤣 doomed from the start.
Americans and football is just.....cringe. All-round cringe, always.
Way too many "professional" football teams in England. Not a player out there with legitimate athletic abilities. They should be accountants or bagging groceries. Why would anyone care about this level of athletics? It's like crying over the performance of a middle school team.
And here you are again still waiting for that argument!!
@@S-Mc84 ?
Really
@@scotttagga6623 really. This is equivalent to school sports in other countries. But whatever it takes so that every male in England can claim to be a professional athlete.
Theres only 92 or so pro.teams im.england that's not.many considering there are a lot of.cities
