2006-09 Big Ron Manager - When Big Ron Went Iffy

  • Filmed in December 2005, and aired on Sky TV the following September, disgraced ex-manager and pundit Ron Atkinson is given an opportunity to rebuild his reputation in the game in the "Big Ron Manager" programme, where he drops in to, errr.... help football managers in trouble. Considering the racist comments that saw him banished from TV screens in the first place, it was perhaps more than coincidental that Atkinson ended up consulting rookie boss Iffy Onuora at Swindon - thankfully (even despite the Town's relegation at the end of the season), the plug was pulled - Ron and the cameras ending up at Peterborough.

In the case of both Swindon and Peterborough, the real motive for them agreeing to be in the programme was to gain cheap publicity for the football clubs, with the knock-on effect of generating more revenue. Ron was just a paid puppet in this game - in reality, his presence was never going to arouse anything other than suspicion and insecurity amongst the managers and coaching staff. Despite what Barry Fry claims, Ron being at both clubs ended in failure.

Let’s be honest, if I’ve got someone trying to offer me advice from a deck chair or a golf course then I’d be annoyed to be honest. I think like Iffy said, it would’ve been good to have a discussion before the project, understand his stance, how valid his opinions are and address the racism comments then it could’ve been better. On the other side, I think even if Ron did that and made the effort then I still think it would’ve only delayed the inevitable with disagreements through the season. Shame because this could’ve helped Ron image wise and there was value in Ron helping Iffy. Could’ve been a great story but it wasn’t to be

It was clearly a PR exercise on Ron Atkinson's behalf to try and rehabilitate himself after his racist insult and no coincidence that Iffy Onoura was black. It was all "I'm Big Ron, it's all about me". All that said, Onoura was dismissive from the start and wasn't interested from the get-go. Surely he could have gained some experience from someone of Atkinson's managerial experience and did come across as quite arrogant. He didn't keep Swindon up and as far as I know hasn't done much in the game afterwards. Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

The loan players in question are going to the same place and are playing with the same players, under Iffy anyway. Would Bryan Robson really have gone "No I don't trust Iffy you can't borrow them, oh what's that Big Ron is there, yeah sure have em for the rest of the season!" Premiership and Championship players go on loan to League One clubs all the time and are willing to do so to get experience, if they have a good season chances are their parent club will have them back or they can get a permanent contract somewhere else. Big Ron being there or not doesn't make a iota of difference.

Cash Back Robbo played under BIG Ron and they have a personal relationship and in most aspects of life it's who you know. I'm sure he would loan out better players via Ron than Iffy

Bollocks mate. If the player's any good whatsoever then multiple clubs will be after him for a loan. That's when little advantages like having a personal relationship with the player's manager can be the difference.

As Kamara says Prem managers don't loan out their talent willy nilly to clubs that they think won't develop them properly.
That's how Ron would've helped get them to Swindon.

Where's the respect there for either the club or the manager?
From Ron's perspective this project was entirely about rebuilding his career because as he said in the Darcus Howe documentary, paraphrasing his fellow fossil Venables, he was "fed up of apologising", which incidentally he never offered to Desailly and always couched with cowardly excuses like for example he was just "repeating what other managers had said".
