  • 🔶 Star Wars Empire at War: Fall of the Republic, both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy have their own style of Fighters, Bombers & Interceptors. But whilst Bombers like the Y-Wing and Interceptors like the V-Wing have a strong purpose in the game, fighters seem a little useless. In today's Empire at War video, we'll find out if that's true.

    Ironicly, unlike in most other mods, in EaWX the bombers are great against shields, but pretty bad against hardpoints as tons of demage gets wasted on a single one unless you give diferent targets to every bomber squadron.

    Honestly bombers would feel a lot better to use if they attacked faster but did less dmg to compensate. The recent update made it so they can do impressive damage to ships but after that initial strike there’s so much downtime between bombing runs that they get chewed apart by point defense. Then again I suppose the main problem is that bombers require dedicated vessels to spawn them that aren’t that great in conventional combat, yet can be easily countered by a few cheap ships that the AI often has traveling with all their fleets. I guess the easiest way to put it is that bombers ARE useful, but you have to go out of your way to make them work effectively as opposed to just buying a few normal ships.

      Well, its actually a realistic display of combined arms. What i usually do is that i keep my bombers held back untill the enemy anti fighter corvettes are in turbolaser range of my frigates and capital ships. Then i focus fire on those Corvettes. Once they are dead i'll sick my bombers on the biggest enemy capital ship and just forget about them. Easy as.

      Honestly I've been making carrier fleets with lots of droid bombers sense I like playing droids sending them in with a lot of fighter support to act as a distraction and then destroying as many key ships as I can before legging it before I get in firing rang.
      Then once I've retreated I got back immediately and take out a few more ships. I've taken out so many fleets even with several dreadnoughts using this trick. Plus the c9799 carrier is super cost effective along side some hardcells and diamond heads as support Incase things get dicy as well as some gozanties to help screen fighters.
      And sense my fleets are made of so many small ships with ok anti fighter weapons in a small area I usually only loose like one or two ships if something goes wrong or I get carless.

    In EAW they were pretty useful but I think fighter, intercepters and more specifically bombers are absolutely useless in both of Corey's mods as a major strategy of EAW and some mods was the ability to do bomber alpha strikes against shield generators and other hard points

    • @maestro_nik
      @maestro_nik Před 2 lety +4

      The reason they were useful is because they would immediately and permanently destroy the shield generators.
      Corey removed both shield generators and the ability to pierce shields.
      For all intents and purposes, they are now the go to pick to actually break a shield, and then go on to then next target.
      If you're in close fights, a bombing run on the capitals you want to take out will sway a battle heavily.

    • @timon6759
      @timon6759 Před 2 lety +4

      @@maestro_nik but it's not even just the shield generators it was all hard points. You could have desperate defenses where you have to destroy either shields or engines to buy more time and stuff

    • @dvader2004
      @dvader2004 Před 2 lety +1

      Bombers are very useful inside vanilla EAW and FOC due to them being able to go through Shields, so you could either go for capital ships Shields (mission where you gotta face 2 mc-80s when you only have up to victories), to destroy engines so they can't escape when retreating for extra kills for minimal effort, and lastly to be able to take out gravity wells so you can retreat if needed. In the Remake 4.0 mod, ALL FIGHTERS are way more impactful. You lose money having to make extra fighters from your hangers after the initial set are destroyed. So you can't infinite spam them. BUT if you can destroy their hangers before they can get the maximum of fighters and bombers out, or if you pummel their forces long enough they can't send anymore fighters. Like said above in all of Corey's mods they disrespect bombers to the fullest, I feel like I just send them with my interceptors to go fight the enemy fighters cus they hardly do any extra damage (unless you bring alot of them of course).

    One thing I like to do:
    As you gather your bombers before a fleet battle, pause the game and target your individual bombers on individual hard points on a enemy ship. It melts every target every time ensuring a faster kill. Mix in your fighter/interceptors with your bombers like shown above to deal with enemy defenders. Hit play and watch the fun!
    Also: target your individual interceptor squads on enemy bombers for better odds against bombing runs.

    @alduintheanti-dragonborn Před 2 lety +8

    Even though fighters and bombers might be too tanky for damage from other fighters and bombers to really kill them, I still like it that way mainly because the strike craft will actually survive long enough for the "repair fighters" ability to be useful, as usually in most mods fighters are too weak and disengaging to get repairs is usually a death sentence.

    my largest criticism for Thrawn Revenge aside saving times is how useless fighters are compared to other mods.
    In earlier builds (I haven't played the newer ones) of Awakening of the Rebellion fighters were outstanding, much more resilent than bombers and their concussion missiles could damage subsystems through shields, even if just by little.
    In Republic at War (my fav mod) fighter swarms are extremely deadly, and one has to constantly have in mind the state and position of their anti-fighter craft to stay safe.
    Even in vanilla the 4 cannons on the x-wing are so extremely deadly that just a couple of wings (4-6) can take out a victory star destroyer after it got rid of it's fighter complement.
    In all of these mods fighters and bombers are pretty well balanced- they can deal a lot but anti-fighter craft absolutely wipes them out. Even a full swarm attack in Republic at War against a screen of like 3 smallest anti-fighter corvettes gets extreme losses when getting in their range. In TR and apparently Fall of the Republic they are nothing more than a background noise.

    • @miqvPL
      @miqvPL Před 2 lety +3

      @@Ben-fk9ey yup, I remember when as NR you could just build a couple of starfighter wings and only light capital ships that could get rid of anti-starfighter and defend planets with just that if you were skilled.
      Now all the skill is gone, even NR fighters&bombers can't alone get rid of capital ships like star destroyers. 80% of fighter play is meaningless, you order them to target something and then focus on your capital ships.
      And it reduces Lucrehulks to big sitting ducks for damage tanking, instead of making them dangerous carriers. Only stuff like Endurance, Mon Cala carrier or Preator carrier stand out when it comes to being usable carriers, Quasars need to be spammed by 5-10 to accomplish anything meaningful.
      I understand the choice to make that EaW mod more capital ship oriented, but personally after watching star wars I expect starfighters to at least have a decent use and role, not just be flies.

    Managing your fighters and keeping enemy bombers from decimating your capital ships is so crucial in Thrawns Revenge and Fall of the Republic. You can be steamrolling the enemy, the suddenly you forgot to tell your fighters to pull back and screen your capitals, and your flagship suddenly has lost all its shields and half its hard points. I also usually have 1-2 gunships with point-defense per capital ship to ensure I have some sort of screen from enemy bomber should my fighters get out of position.

    Fighters and bombers don't make sense in mods that have torpedo's blocked by shields.

  • @kylelantan9220
    @kylelantan9220 Před 2 lety +1

    Fighters I find are best used to shoot down enemy bombers and to go in first against fleets with anti-fighter ships, and hang about. By them heading in slightly ahead of a bomber group, bombers will take less fire and have more time to reload weapons such as proton torpedoes. Fighters are more effective at destroying bombers usually because they have better weapon arrays. For example, An X-wing attacking a b-wing, vs an A-Wing attacking a b-wing. The x-wing will have a proton torpedo and 4 lasers, where the A-wing will have 2 missiles and 2 laser cannons. The X-wing will shred the bomber faster due to the extra laser fire while still having more speed than a bomber to win a dogfight. The A-wing will need more passes, and has way to much speed, making it so the dumb ai of Empire at War has the a-wing pass in front of the bomber multiple times for it's guns to shoot at them.
    The other thing with the AI of Empire at War is micromanagement. Grabbing all your fighters and right clicking one enemy fighter group to start fights is usually the way I see most players start fights. However, if you select all your fighters, pause, right click an enemy, then shift click a squadron out of your selection and right click a new enemy fighter group, you assign the still selected fighters to the second target, with the previously unselected fighter fighting the first. Repeat till you have all your fighters on different (and ideal) targets. By assigning a group of your fighters to each individual enemy fighter groups, they will get on the tails of the enemy fighters while the enemy fighters attempt to swarm one or two of your squadrons. In Empire at War, if you can find out which fighters the enemy are attacking, by having that group flee enemy fighters will chase in a straight line, allowing your fighters to win very easily.

      The V-19 is the most prevalent fighter in the fleet, being spawned out of Acclamators, Venators, and Dreadnoughts.
      The Z-95 gets spawned by the Invincible-Class Capital Ship if I recall correctly, which is the tankiest ship you can get cheaply in the early game. Other than the Praetor and Mandator classes you can build which both cost above 10,000 credits each.
