I live in an apartment building that shares ventilation. I have to get up early to open the window in order to keep out smioke or dryer sheet smells. I do notice gas smells coming in from the outside fireplace being burned most of the time. Last year an apartment had to be gutted because the person allowed animals to use it as a bathroom. I smelled sewage inside my apartment on the 4th floor which is the top floor. No one could smell it but me. I have always had a high sense of smell. The cleaninng guy that use to work for the company told me the 3rd and even the second floors smelled like sewage. I kept my window open with a window filter in it because I felt like I was suffacationg. Some people smole in the buildling that is a non smoking community. I am highly allergic to the dope that someone smoked and caused me sleep paralisis which my doctor confirmed that some people get from the dope the states are allowing people to smoke now days. I noticed after they filters were finallly changed that the sewage smelll was going away. I even went to a doctor to find out if it was me. Had a camera stuck up my nose into my sinuses and I was told by the specialist the move if I can becuae there was notihing wrong with me. Dogs pee on the carpet in the hallway and last September a dog had diarrhea on the rughs and it wasn't cleaned up for over a week. So it probably soaked into the carpet. There isn't capret inside my apartment but in the hallway and they only go over the carpet with a vacuum about once a week and never have really did a good cleaning. Like only passs once or twice in one spot with the vacuum. I have lived here since 2016 and I don't think they ever cleaned the ventilation system. There is a lot of dust that blows into my bathroom on a windy day. I am trying to find a better place to live and waiting for an opening. I have a hard time breathing in this building. Management doesn't seem to care. I am thinking of buying a tool to test my air and wondering what would be best? Thanks for any advice.

Wow, Heather! That's a LOT to deal with. Between the smoke, sewage, and animal stains, it sounds like this apartment building is in rough shape. Is there anything you could do to talk to your city about the conditions? It's likely that you aren't the only one in your building having a hard time with the air.
You can make your own air purifier with a furnace filter and box fan, add some air-cleaning plants, and try diffusers or candles to mask the smells. But it sounds like those will just be band-aids to a bigger problem. We hope things get better and you can find a better apartment.

@@asksafewise I am thinking aout calling the health department about it. One man that worked here said he was told the gas isn't harmful but I read it was. I really think the state needs to send an inspector out like they do at hair salons to check rental properties. Thanks for the reply and suggestions!!!
