  • After the recent backlash about economy changes, Gaijin asked content creators for feedback on War Thunder in general. That got me thinking about everything I would change if I were in a position to do so.

I like how Gaijin nerfed traction because of certain spots, when they literally had an update where various out of bounds areas were expanded. Which not only rendered the traction nerfs redundant, but proved they had a much simpler and less annoying solution.

Here is a great way to stop the controversy over up tiers... If you are up tiered, depending on the amount of the up tier you get an sl and rp boost. People sometimes leave up tiers because they know they will just loose sl after dying... but if they get a boost then there is an incentive to actually play the up tier instead of leaving and queuing another nation(which I do quite a lot)

Another very niche thing is when a crewmember gets swapped halfway through reloading and for some reason the whole process restarts. The loader was ready to ram the shell into the breech but somehow him taking the driver's spot caused the shell to teleport back to it's rack. It's neither realistic nor fun. Either give us the option to keep the loader where he is until he's done reloading or continue the reload from where it left of but with the "no loader' penalty.

The loader replaced the driver while reloading should have practically no punishment to it.

Shells having reduced hitbox is actually accurate to how they interact with armor on impact as majority of the shell's impact energy is, in fact, concentrated in the small cylindrical "rod" at the center of it. As such, the shell can easily "squeeze" through openings that are significantly below its size.
And it's something I personally wanted to be done for a while as it would solve a lot of issues with weird skirts and mantlets.

If Gaijin would actually make a lot of the shells and damage models work how they are supposed to, Warthunder would be a whole different game. Tons of stuff would change very drastically. Namely APHE, AP, APDS and how certain chemical round (i.e HESH, HE and HEAT) would behave.
Best example I can tell for APDS and HEAT/HESH are:
Panzer VI P (the command variety) has some bolt-on armor which makes practically any APDS shell shatter - For no reason. It doesnt add volumetric characteristics irl or change impact-shock towards the APDS shell. It's just bad design. (The front plate is incorrectly given 102mm (2x) where the "imaginary" version was only build having 100mm (2x). But i.e. the British Shot SV Mk.1 APDS has 269mm pen, after which it should start non-penning/shattering - Where do the remaining 69mm of pen until failure go ?)
And any ~9.3-11.0 HEATFS cant pen ERA/NERA elements, but somehow can overpressure them. I'm glad I get kills with a stock round that, in that environment, is completely useless 99% of times, but that's silly - Specifically considering HESH (from personal experience even that of the FV4005) doesnt overpressure anything it doesnt happen to land directly beneath. Seriously, A tiger 2 or T34 surviving a HESH shell to the upper front plate, turret cheek and/or turret/hull side nor is not gonna overpressure, while a tiny 130g HEATFS will ? (The L1 HESH doesnt even overpressure open-tops at times - It rips holes in warships the size of the tanks you shoot at. It needs two loaders for Christs sake).

APHE still mostly damages in a cone, not a sphere. Also, hitting more solid armor with solid shot that you can still get through causes more spalling, not less, where currently in game residual pen being lower causes less damage. ACPR also still causes nearly as much spalling as standard AP, though a little less. Basically APHE overperforms while ACPR underperforms, and the UK suffers.

@@mosadcoow If all the crew in the turret or hull has been killed it is denied at least one of those options. Again, our whole endless debate about buffing/nerfing APHE vs solid shot is a product of the very artificial victory conditions of Gaijin. “Fire until it burns” was the standard instruction in war for tanks but in WT setting a tank on fire is semi-useless, for example. In the case of fire, if we are going to have fire extinguishing at all then the crew shouldn’t be able to do anything else. I’ve killed my fair share of enemy while I was burning, but it’s a bad mechanic.

One major thing I want to see from Gaijin is, when they are making changes, a background information spreadsheet. An example of something like this for BR changes would include things such as: the time period when the stats were taken, how many unique players played that vehicle within the period of data collection, and the vehicle categories that were killed using this vehicle. Things similar to that so we can see the efficiency of the vehicle from the data and not just have to guess from the changes.
A second thing I would like to see is if something doesn't have enough unique players to get accurate data, then show the efficiency of a vehicle across all skill levels. They could drop it to some standard amount to entice more people to play it so it can be reevaluated at its new place. This will make sure that vehicles that might have gone up due to them being played by higher skilled players will be able to be reevaluated with a wider range of skill levels. It could even get its own devblog to make players aware of the reevaluation of the vehicle. These reevaluations should be separate from BR changes. A set time before BR changes are announced, a vehicle reevaluation devblog should go out outlining the vehicle and why they are being reevaluated.

I agree with basically everything you said, here is what i would add in addition
first, a small change, i think the spawn point system is weird and ambiguous. just rebalance it to be based on mission score (obviously the first spawn costs doesnt require any points.)
second, There needs to be more of an incentive to play SPAA and or otherwise have ai SPAA, hear me out. Some SPAA are very fun to play, but others are very one note and boring. Air target kill rewards should be increased across the board and any SPAA without the ability to target ground targets gets scouting. Anyone remember the short sturmtiger event? add an ability to spawn an AI anti-aircraft emplacement just behind tank spawn for an sp cost, this would need a lot of balancing but would add an additional dimension to the game strategy.
Third, (and subsequently) plane spawn cost doesnt need to be through the roof, as while it is frustrating to be killed by an aircraft, they shouldn't be made strategically irrelevant, but it does need to be increased relative to the efficacy of the plane in regards to controlling the ground. What i believe would be better is a system more similar to arcade or to scout drones, where you can spend sp to spawn in a plane without sacrificing your tank and you have as much time as you want, and if you die or land on the runway it sends you back to your tank (if you land anywhere else it shouldnt force you back however, go capture those points in your STOL or biplane you madlad). I like the idea of interceptors being cheap, and can be used to swiftly counter-cas, or just to get a birds eye view of the battlefield. The battle could even start with a few Ai interceptors on standby, loitering outside the battlefield.
Fourth, crew replenishment should either be based on the total amount of crew or should bring back all crew to orange, hear me out, crew replenishment (and fire extinguisher replenishment), should be available to do once one each cap on a map. As well as Cap reward increase, these would incentivize players to capture points instead of playing team death match, or running around the edge of the map to play capture the flag.

This way fighting a BMP or T-55 in your 6.7 heavy can never happen. Meanwhile people can be standing behind your spawn and not show up on the map. Because of this spawn camping is way too easy. The only "reason" it needs to be this way is because matches often drag on forever with a few enemies sitting in spawn. To fix this simply mark certain zones at the spawns, and the edges of the map as "non capture point contesting" or smt, meaning that enemies there don't stop the match from ending almost instantly if all 3 caps are yours, maybe only after a certain amount of time.

Since France is played mostly by people who already completed some tech-trees, and therefore have more experience, its individual vehicle stats are greatly inflated. Meaning, gaijin will take a look at the stats that are composed of highly experienced players and a few newcomers and increase the br to sometimes unplayable levels for new players. (see amx 13 (fl10 and fl11), ARL, ACRA, 2C, ebr 1951, even things like event vehicles like Lvt 40, amx 30 (50cal one) or the premium amd with a short 47mm sitting at 1.7 for god knows why. I could write a novel on what I think are necessary changes to Ground alone, but forced to choose my top 5 would probably be: Remove drones completely, separate BRs for aircraft in Ground, Improve daily login rewards, Buff SPAA, Introduce a mandatory mini-map usage tutorial.
-First two are pretty self explanatory: Drones are busted and separate BRs for aircraft would go a *significant* way to balancing CAS.
-Daily rewards are crap. I'd like to see a sort of gradually evolving reward pool, so longer streaks are guaranteed better rewards; Nobody hitting their 1000th day should be getting the same rewards as somebody on day 1, and the decals aren't remotely good enough. Also bring back GE wagers.
-SPAA buffs can be pretty far ranging. Personally I'd like an AP belt nerf so many overtiered AA can go back down to BRs where they're more useful, looking at you Falcon. Realistic AA gun sights would be a godsend as current ones are utterly useless. AA should be able to re-arm in spawn (and so should everything tbh) so they're not doomed in certain modes or forced to make suicide runs to caps in others. Rewards for shooting down aircraft in AA should be *significantly* increased. AA should be given more spawns if you've got the backups equipped, as currently it's far too easy to run out of effective AA against endless hordes of CAS. I'll probably think of more as soon as I finish this comment.
-Mini map usage is absolutely vital to playing effectively yet hardly anyone ever seems to use it. I can't count the number of times I've seen teams wiped out by one or two enemies because not a single player decided to simply left-click the map and tell everyone where they were, or the times where I'm frantically pinging an enemy but nobody on my team is paying a lick of attention to the map. All we need is a simple mandatory tutorial for anyone starting GRB/Sim for the first time that quickly goes over what the mini map is, why it's so important and how to click on it.

This would apply quite well for top tier MBTs where every nation has several variants of the top MBT and in low-mid tiers where you might see several T-34's or Shermans.
    Repeat module costs.
This ties into the previous one a bit. If you have just finished researching the BR412D shell on the Su-100, you have to do the full research cost to get the same shell again on the Su-100P and T-44-100. A discount to the research cost of previously researched shells would be nice. Even if it's just like 5%.

Russians on a similar but lesser degree of the same picture by having 6 variants of the T-34 and 4 variants of the KV-1, If you start including same gun/shell then that goes up quite rapidly too.

Agree on changing the heli damage models. The "empty space" inside a lot of those helicopters is made up of hydraulic lines, push-pull control surface rods, and important wire harness; all of which damage to can significantly reduce the amount of time a helicopter will be able to remain airborne.
The only places on a helicopter where there's empty space is because it was specifically engineered into the design for a maintenance worker to reach a component.

My only critic with your suggestions, are when it comes to spawn cost with vehicles.
I dont think that spawn costs have to go up overall, but they should start to vary spawn costs with the amount of ordinance that is taken.
The difference being that a aircraft taking 1 bomb should cost less than a plane taking 3, this can be scaled by weight. So a heli taking 4 missiles compared to 16 would have different spawn costs. With custom loadouts, this would be easily as a vehicle can have a min and max spawn cost, and it varies by weight.
I dont know how this has not been implemented, but its totally a logical solution. A KA-50 taking 8 missiles over 16 would make a big change. By having 16 missiles cost more, it would subsequently tie to survivability of that heli, by not being able to just out trade AA by firing more missiles.

FFAR mighty mouse rockets. That is an unholy asston of ordnance. Not to mention 800 rounds of 4x20mm's firing ground belts that are, quite lethal.

Yeah but you have to take into account how many people got bushes . Gaijin made us buy bushes for a reason I think everyone forgot that at one point they were free and now they don’t want to deal with the community trying to sue them if they make changes to them. But at the same time every 4 or 5 games I am fighting bush tanks and it’s annoying when you don’t know what your fighting so you can’t guess where to shoot wasting time and getting killed . Basically they won’t do anything to bushes because they deem it to be working as intended.

    • @FirestormMk3
      @FirestormMk3 Před rokem

Lawsuits aside, I don't think they'd make this change because those bushes are a few bucks a piece and you need several plus premium for decoration slots to become an invisitank and Gaijin isn't giving up that P2W revenue. That said while in the US where corporations are people but with more rights, that ToS statement would hold up, but some countries have consumer protections laws and you can't just override those with a statement in your terms of service. Now, I don't think they'd really face that issue with hiding bushes, after all they already do the more contentious thing of nerfing premiums, but it isn't just a cut and dry thing where you can just absolve responsibility of anything with a sign or ToS. Even in the US, those signs places put up that they aren't responsible for you getting hurt or damage to your property no matter the cause won't hold up in court because a sign doesn't overrule the law of premises liability.

An idea I had recently is very simple but I think would effectively help the grind of everyone in the game in the long-term.
When you research and unlock every vehicle in a tech tree, you get a proportional amount of research points and SL that you can assign to any other tech tree of the same vehicle type, and that scales up with the modifications, so the more vehicles you spade, the more RP and SL you'll get at the end, which would give players the incentive to spade more vehicles.
(I'm taking these numbers out of my ass just to give an example, this example I'm thinking of a 2:1 conversion rate of RP and 4:1 conversion rate of SL but it can be reduced or increased to anything really)
So let's say someone spades every ground vehicle in the USSR tech tree, and that whole tree needed 3 million RP and 5 million SL to complete, you get 1.5 million RP and 1.250 million SL exclusively to use in any other tech tree (including modifications).
So you're rewarded for putting more hours into the game by being able to effectively cut your grind shorter, because you've already done the grind the first time, you shouldn't need to put 5000 hours in the game just to have to put another 5000 hours in the game because you decided you want to try Germany out instead of the US.
