Rotten Fenders? I Got You Covered! - Replacing Fender Caps On My Ratty 1955 Chevy Nomad

  • Turns out the fenders for my 1955 Chevy Nomad weren't quite as nice as I thought. The fender caps looked correct but they were actually just full or filler and aluminum foil.....
Luckily I previously found a set or replacement fender caps. The quality or the repair panels weren't the greatest but they got the job done. Measuring, cutting, grinding, welding and a little eye balling got the job done.
So check it out, maybe learn something? Probably judge my hackary? But enjoy it all the same.
This old Hot Rod keeps getting better and better.
Now tell me in the comments how I did it wrong.....
Also buy a shirt so I can buy more hood scoops:

Hey Dan, What I like about you is that your not afraid to try anything on these cars. The car coming along just fine and a lot faster then I thought. Karl over at Make it Kustom is a cool guy. He has damn near every tool for and kind of body work or customizing anything metal. I first seen him on Riding with Alex Taylor.
You should check with her father, Riding with Alex Taylor, he has a 55 or 56 Nomad in his shop. He may have or know of parts you may need. Merry Christmas to you, Danielle, your family, friends and all your subscribers.

Hey man, you have the knack, and the guts. Id like to reccomend a book to you from 1931 by Sargent, its called "the key to metal bumping" basically it was a vocational school textbook from the days before bondo, and i swear, just what it teaches about putting heat into metal with glancing hammer strikes will change what u can do. Just a recommendation, and keep it up bud. Nice work

I owned a 1973 VW Transporter (type 2). I crawled under it one day and I grabbed the body side panel to pulled myself out and poked my hand into a panel of newspapers and a thick coating of bondo. I found out the Van was covered in rust as it had been in the northeast USA. I drove it until I dropped a valve on cylinder #1. I gave it away after that. Impressive repair you did. Hope you and Dani have a Merry Christmas 🎄

I like to use a piece of copper or a bar of aluminum pressed against the back side when there is a panel gap to fill that winds up being a little wider than I expected. It acts as a nice heat sink to keep from blowing through the existing panel which is usually a little thin from corrosion. The steel won't stick to the aluminum bar or copper bar and really helps. Give it a try sometime, it may be helpful. No such thing as cheating when welding!

nice work on the front fenders and rad support repairs . the fender caps are probily both made at the same factory but the left one was a reject so they sell them cheaper with no brand name.
i bought cheap 55 quarter panel front and rear sections they must be rejects made by the same company as the more expensive ones that are just stamped out better.
watching you knocking out the nomad , i switched off from my 55 convertible to my 56 hardtop to get it done first so i can drive it soon .
then back to the 55 convertible it was worse than your nomad ,and it started out as a broken in half 56 convertible and a 55 belair 4dr sedan doner.
your doing a great job on the nomad cant wait to see it go on its first drive !!

You can pull and install a SBC in a tri5 without cutting or removing the rad bar, a short water pump installed, the engine has to be at about a 45 degree angle, back of the block to the passenger side, front to the drivers side, i don't use a chain, a intake plate, two chain quick links and a swivel, it will slip in there and not touch anything, i just did one at work on Thursday.

Another awesome one , Dan ! I love the approach to these replacements as you work with what is there , but work it with the patience needed for an easily finished product . That work smarter , not harder , ethic probably accounts for the 6 cars you can finish up in 1 year . This also includes the time you take to cut up "donor cars " during the process of building the 6 , whilst waiting on parts . In other words , your time management skills are impeccable . No drugs or alcohol seems to lend to this ability as well . Your "apprenticeship" was in your garage , building cars . Done . You're mastering techniques , with simple tools most of us have , or can afford to own . That said , 3 sets of body hammers & dollies won't make you better . You've grown far more resourceful not having them . Let's hope your hood isn't all "Dane'd" up ! Don't short yourself , Brother ! We love you just the way you are , resourceful , undaunted ,& humble.
