Fender Well Headers And Straight Piped Exhaust! - 1955 Chevy Nomad!

- I know this video is going to be a little controversial. A lot of people want to see this 1955 Chevy Nomad built as a "stock" cruiser. All the custom touches I'm adding can easily be changed back to stock. Ratchet shifter, bucket seats, nose high stance and SOME BAD ASS EXHAUST.
So I love, and I mean LOVE fender well headers. I'd been looking for a set when my buddy Josh offered up the old exhaust from his 1955 Chevy Gasser. 30 year old headers into used stock car mufflers out a set of 3 inch hater pipes. This set up is loud!
Honestly it's probably a temporary exhaust. The headers will stay but the boom tubes gotta go if this car is going to be street driven.
Up next is a belt drive and cooling system. Then we can really run and drive this hotrod!
Also buy a shirt so I can buy more hood scoops:

Hey Dan great job on the headers. One step closer on a project that most people wouldn't even attempt. Which ever direction you go it's your car and it will have your stamp on it and that's how it should be.
Yup painting headers is a win lose battle. What does work is header wrap. Keeps the heat where it belongs and looks pretty good.
Just out of conversation I have used John Deere corn head grease for leaking gear boxes. It's like gun grease cold and gear oil hot. Best of both worlds.
Hmmm. I'll have to pick some up. Never heard of it.
@@DDSpeedShop if you need I can text or email you a picture of the container
I’ll second the corn head grease. Tip I picked up in forum years ago. It’s similar to 0 grade grease. Those recirculating ball steering gears really need a lightweight grease that flows, especially at low temps. Something like wheel bearing or chassis grease is too thick and will cavitation around the moving parts.
they used to call it goose grease I think in the old days.
I have to break away after your white header rant and get my stuff done. My two cents is to heat-shield the master and brake lines. As always, enjoy watching you work.
I love how you have to remind people that it's your car and your rules for it's build.
Dan, Thermo Tech makes white header wrap. I used heat sleeving around my brake lines and wires that are close to the headers as well. Nomads coming together nicely.
Wrap the headers where they are close to the brake master cylinder and battery.
Thabks man
"We're going to DE-WELD them". Said with a straight face / deadpan.
I think that's one of the reasons I like the channel so much.
Most of the ones I used always attached to a water pump bolt. Most of them had a stud coming off that worked better!
She sounds rowdy. It’s coming along great. I would put some type of heat shielding on those brake lines and combination valve. I would be afraid of boiling the fluid.
My idea as well, maybe wrap the headers to keep the heat down.
Probably battery as well, that heat will cook it. Looking good though!
Yeah she'll get a little more loving
It wouldn't be Sunday without some wrenching on a Tri-Five Chevy at DD Speed Shop!! Looking good!! Cheers!! 🤓
Enjoyed the intro & flashback of Josh's headers. Don't worry about what others think. Your vision & sweat. Stick with it man.
Thanks Rick?
!
Some factory W/P bolts have a threaded head protruding from the nut or use a stud. Also some Water Pumps have threaded boss on top for the alternator bracket to bolt to. I use clothes line to measure my belts
Thanks thom
PERFECT!!
Maybe you can mail the haters the pieces of inner fender you chopped out 😂
Hahaha
Be wary that the headers do not overheat your proportioning valve causing loss of brakes. Nice job on the project!
Yeah she needs a little tweeking here and there
Hey Dan,
The best thing for sizing a belt is; an old too-long belt that's been cut....and a piece of masking tape.
Just do your belt-wrap and put the tape where the end overlaps. Then just grab your tape-measure.
The Dayco numbers are like "15475". The "15" means 15/32" wide and the "475" means 47.5" long.
All your better brands have part numbers that mean something.
Totally agree. I didn't have a belt this long haha
@@DDSpeedShop Now, watch 1,000 too- long, cut belts show up in the mailbox.
Gotta Love A 55 with Fender Wells !! Good Job n Vid 👍👍
ANY engine with straight pipes sounds great to me.
Huh, what diddya say? Can't hear ya!😆
Sure it does, for a minute or five...after that the droning noise at highway speeds will give you a head ache sooooooooo bad.
I think most people who make a comment like yours, have never actually driven a very loud car for a serious length of time at highway speed.
@@DarkFlamage Most but no ALL. Straight piped diesels are not as loud in the cab as a car with a gas engine. But still music to my ears.
you got to love that small block rumble
Hey Dan the best header gaskets are the factory stock ram horn gasket, put the metal side to the header they seal up and you never have to replace them they last forever.
Thabks Tony!
@@DDSpeedShop You're welcome buddy I put a lot of gasket in over the years and me and my brother decided to try some factory gasket one day and they worked great, we use them on big blocks to, glad I could help, did you receive my email I sent you. Tony
That's pretty wild lucky you got the place next door you may have to buy the rest of the block!!!!
Alt bracket for 69-72 GM pickup are more rigid n take a smaller belt. Thanks for sharing Dan😁👍
Bonjour Dan, Dani. Closer still and closer! Wow! Those pipes blister, what a great, angry song they sing… the neighbours must luuuvvvv it!
Sounds good. I love those headers! Been thinking about doing a driveway burnout in my car today. Neighbors will think mild mannered Paul has lost his mind. LOL
Haha all a out burnouts at home
Hey Dan, Hope your Christmas was nice. You know what's cool over at your place ? Danielle doesn't throw a fit when you spend money on your tri 5's. Also, when you need her help for something, she comes right out no complaining. You have an awesome wife. You told us you have it driving already but can't wait till we all can go. Still can't believe you have that Nomad together after what it looked like when you brought it home. Fantastic job.
No complaining, except for a little bit for bleeding brakes,
@@Plumeria724 Your talking about when she had to do it with her hand, right. lol
I use a round extension cord for measuring belt length, run it around pulleys bypass each other and make a mark.measure with tape measure
The sweet music of a small block Chevy with open headers, can't wait until it's finished. Seems like there was a 55 Nomad gasser called gomad Nomad.
I am loving it the nomad is getting better everyday.
Cool car.
The upper alternator bracket hooks to the bolt hole on the intake. Where the throttle return spring is.
I Love it when a plan comes together , Or even a 55 Nomad ! ! Keep up the good work ! ! !
As expected, car sounds pretty sweet!! I run ram horns on my daily '65 C-10... Classic look and some hot rod sound, but you can't beat the sound or look of a set of fender well headers!! Solid choice Dan!!
Yeah. Stock runners vs fenderwells
Thanks Dan , it's is looking good. Glad to see some of your parts are showing up. Keep the videos coming and have a great week ✌️
Hey Dan
Happy New Year!
The work you do with these vehicles, is always incredible for me to fathom.
In my opinion, this car is going to be your crowning jewel to date.
Take care man🙂
Can’t beat the sound of those headers. The exhaust sounds great as well. Get that sound out of the side pipes will be awesome.👍👍👍
She said I am sick in the head like you Dan but that's the way she likes it, lol.Nomad sounds great man 👍👍
Haha worth it
If you like it, I guess that's all that counts. Rock on...
Exellent work like always nomad coming along very quickly. Keep up the great work and videos, big shout out to you from Mexico buddy. Happy holidays to you my friend.
Thabks Juan!
Try NASCAR exhaust tips flush with the rocker edge.
Yeah. Thats would be a sweet look for sure
Good stuff Dan
Coming along nicely Dan!
Great Video. Love the laugh after firing it up with the exhaust done.
you should have been here yesterday replaced exhaust manifold gasket on my 1966 D500 wrecker and only one bolt broke i have never been so happy to have a broken bolt. good job on car
Yes black....everything black.
Ahh, memories! That exhaust must bring back some "good times" (notice good times in air quotes)! Now you can relive that lost summer vacation everytime you start it up!😎
It was a damn good time haha
Loving the headers!it's coming together fast!
Dan, the Nomad is awesome! It's your car, it absolutely should be whatever the hell you want it to be! I had only thing to suggest, what about using some of that 'heat wrap' material around the headers just under the brake block? Maybe it could save from a bunch of moving brake things....food for thought.
Keep up the great work! 👍
Sounds Awesome Dan! I'm really enjoying this build. 😎👍
Wes, in Oregon
Sure , many would like to see it as a stock restore, however reality is to upgrade certain parts to make it usable and to enjoy.
You should wrap the headers with exhaust wrap to help keep the brake lines cool
Looks great Dan. Nomad sounds freaking awesome. Straight pipes are great.👍😎✌️
Ya Baby ! Sounds Knarley Man ! Coming along very well ! Saw the Christmas pic of you smoken the tires , liked of course , so I know what you got for Christmas ! Lol ! Also tuned in on Saturday to see the empty garage , that you still had to clean & pick up , but eh' . As others had commented , it was nice to see you actually relax . She sure has come a long way from broke , empty & rusty ! Now she's solid , full , & ready for Rocking On some miles again ! NICE !
maybe you can wrap the brake lines with header tape . sounds great.
Nice Dan, I like ware your going with this !
Alt adj arm goes to upper w/p mounting bolt. Bolt is a special bolt with stud end so you can loosen without disturbing water pump mounting.
The brake master is going to get a little warm you might consider a heat shield been down that road on my 56 sedan with fender well headers
Yeah she needs some tweaks yet
merry x mas dan and danny thank you for youre good video
Wrap the header at brake booster you might cook the fluid on a long run....
Awesome work Dan!
Sounds great
Man you accomplished a TON while I was on a road trip!
One of your better builds in terms of appearance and attention to detail. Nice job!
What are you saying? They're all top notch hahaha
The engine compartment looks really good.
Satin or semi gloss black works best in a GM engine bay. Shiny black highlights the imperfections, semi gloss hides better. A shot of Armor All now and then gives it an OE appearance (at least that's what I do).
MUR-REY CHRISTMAS from Ontario Canada Dan and Danni ..👋😎👍
🎅🤶☃️🎄❄🍻
All the best in the New Year guys
Keep vids coming ..probably more covid free time for builds ..👍👍
Looking good Dan, sounds good too. 👍
Well that sounds pretty good, car coming together nicely
Thanks for sharing your excitement..
Good day Dan watched your live feed, then had a fight with the Christmas spirits, they won so I went to sleep. Enjoy the show.
Really diggin' the headers, totally agree on the white. There's a company in Calgary that does white jet hot coating, wonder how much to ship there and back?
Excellent job as always.
Old school rodders I know just use white BBQ paint. Cheap, high heat, respray as needed.
Eastwood makes a good one too. I've used their stainless manifold paint on my Willis, painted them twice in 30 yrs!
Black...my favorite color. Wish I knew about you four years ago...I got rid of a truckload of trifle parts...fresh 502" bigblock...narrowed nine Ford...magnesium and aluminum wheels..to many to describe. My magnesium wheels were sold and shipped to two brothers running tri-fives at a drag strip they had..I think maybe Michigan? I have photos of the wheels on their gassers...shipped another bunch of parts to the Midwest for a project car.
Traded a Mega Blower with dual 600 Holleys and old school aluminum air cleaner just recently...hated to let it go!
Still have the Vertex magneto and cable drive Stewart Warner 9k tach...about all that is left...other than my 150 sedan.
Best to you and your family this Xmas!
Oh man. Thats a pile of sweet parts!
Headers look so cool .
Can't wait to see it on the road
Danny boy you do such a fantastic job on these Tri 5 ves that this Nomad is so bad ass, I wanted to let y'all know that it doesn't matter how Shity of a day I've had i come home and watch you and then uncle T to get my Mopar fix and my day is so much better so i hope you and Dannie had a wonderful Christmas and we love you guys so keep it up man 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
Hey thabks so much Mark! Really appreciate it
Very cool. You got to paint the headers
Progress is being made. Its been said below also but I would definitely move that proportioning valve. Its going to get cooked where it is. You could cut and weld its bracket so it sits behind the headers next to the servo.
Eh, may want more space away from the headers and the brake lines/combination valve. Or put some kind of heat wrap or shield on them.
Another thought was to move the combination valve back farther to the firewall, but the line work is already done, so.... yeah.
Coming along nicely, sounds GOOD!
head lights look very nice
Looking good D, my brother had fenderwell headers on his old 67 chevy II... Right into cherry bombs.... twas loud a f
I think having the extra space on the passenger side inner fender cut out, gives more air flow over the header.
Sounds like fun, good jam.
Looking really good
Going to be a sweet ride. You have put your own stamp on this one. Not everyones cuppa, but hey, its your ride right so looking forward to see it tearing up the neighborhood.
Weld a 1" x3/8s bolt to the water pump bolt so you have a stud bolt .all older Chevy's had those
Lookin good dude! I’d rap them headers around the brake stuff!
That exhaust sounds so damn sweet
She is sounding great buddy
Love the sound of the exhaust.
Same haha
Coming along great Dan............
tri-five Chevys are one of the best-looking cars in the 50s
The factory water pump bolt had a threaded stud on the top driver side for the alternator bracket.
Wrap the headers where the header is anywhere near to the brakes.
I allways hit the like button before I watch it .cause I know if it a D&D SPEED SHOP video it's gonna be great😎
Hell yeah. Thanks John!
Perfectionist Dan heard the clickity clack of the header missing gasket. But I didn't. Best and better sounded great. Might go look at a junk yard n grab the right alternator adjuster bar. Bolts to the intake but is factory bent for the correct angle. The intake has a bolt hole right in front. I saw it on yours. Header are correct fender well type for every 55-57.
I agree, white headers with an orange engine! Love that look. I had a set of aluminum coated headers that were painted white. They looked good for a few years until I hit them with the pressure washer.....
Yup then it's all over haha
I don't go for looks,I go for performance and black is the most heat dissipating color they have coatings now , high heat coatings that you would not believe the finish and endurability you get, their ceramic and come in a rattle can too I painted the wheels on my Corolla gloss black I didn't even hardly prep them and they're still just as shiny as ever out there it's been 2 years now.
Sounds good too!!
you might have to heat shield that master cylinder and proportion valve that might start to boil your brake fluid . and that battery I'm only saying that because I've had both of those things happen in my 53 Studebaker with a 58 Corvette drivetrain, with homemade headers, and then as usual you address the problem I'm talking about later on in the video. there weren't alternators back then the driver side is where the generator was. those will work fine as long as you polarize them anytime you remove a battery cable and change batteries it's really simple just a jumper wire
Sounds awesome!!!
Hell yeah! Sounds like heaven!
Aw man those fenderwells look good....real good 🍻
A sewing measuring tape would be great for measuring the belt length.
Hey Dan car sounds good . I used factory exhaust manifold gaskets with sealer so far works good. I have used a nylon rope to get a belt length. Ahh. The smell of high octane thru headders .
Thabks man!
