- 42 9th graders are sent to a deserted island. They are given a map, food, and various weapons. An explosive collar is fitted around their neck. If they break a rule, the collar explodes. Their mission: kill each other and be the last one standing. The last survivor is allowed to leave the island. If there is more than one survivor, the collars explode and kill them all.

Movies like this showing how ugly humans can be are sometimes more scary then movies with magical beings or ghosts and monsters - this feels more realistic
If you watched the actual movie you would know it has nothing to do with being ugly people....It is set in a Dystopian future where there are too many people that are lazy and do nothing but damage society so the Governments set up this program to weed out the stupid, weak and the lazy.
The rate of human reproduction makes the movie an actual real life possibility.
Yes and no since they both are works of fiction
true
But kinda stupid for the government to kill their students as then their whole country will be filled with adults since yougsters all die. Then adults die then no one is left
Seen this movie so many times, it’s so good, the sequel is good too
Let's appreciate the fact that without this film the "BR" genre of videogames wouldn't even exist today. I've read the manga and watched this film, it's still and is one of the best brutal survival games ever shown in media, and it still holds up today. Gotta love how Takashi Miike also hinted a lesson in this movie to which you'll understand if you watched the whole movie. Great content as always Mystery Recapped keep it up!
Wat? Battle royal was adapted from this movie?
And this movie is adapted from a Manga?
@@Ayaan69420 basically yeah, the manga is really good on it's own. There are a majority of differences to this film tho, overall it's the same premise. The manga depicts more character development and more disturbing k1lls compared to the movie. Both are underrated gems on their own. I highly suggest you read and watch them.
@@Ayaan69420 yes the original BR game like Arma & H1Z1 was heavily influenced by this movie
@@JacobJohnson-lh4gx why wasn't this turned into an anime too
Battle royal games these days are just multi-player with guns i haven't seen something like this never before
I can't believe what they turned real BR into
Battle royale is a very simple and obvious concept that would definitely exist without this movie LMAO
Small fun fact: Quentin Tarantino has said publically that this is one of his favorite movies of all time.
When he was writing the script for Kill Bill Vol.1, he got in contact with actress Chiaki Kuriyama, who played Girl No.13 Takako Chigusa in this film, and wrote the part of Gogo Yubari especifically for her, based on her portrayal of Takako.
That… is so f*cking awesome.
Whi is girl no.13
So Kill Bill is either an alternate universe or the aftermath of the game where her character ended up somehow living anyways and took a different name under Gogo Yubari, which explains her choice of outfit for such a psychopath.
@@mayyohlah5360 She doesn't show up in the recap. You have to see the movie to see her. She's the girl who stabs a guy in the crotch.

This movie looks interesting! The ending was a pleasant surprise. I have been seeing plenty of movie recaps lately, and usually characters like Noriko end up dying in these kinds of movies, so it was such a relief for me to see that she survived along with the main character Shuya. Too bad about Shogo dying though. He pretended to betray the main characters so that he could trick the battle royale coordinators into thinking that there was only one survivor, so that all three of them could leave the battle. (Their collars had microphones.) That was very noble of him.
This is my favorite film to date, I'm so glad it's getting more of the attention that it deserves!! Such a masterpiece!!
sameee
Right??
Eh. I feel like there are a lot of stupid plot points and things that don’t make sense. So they have a declining population and all the kids are dropping out of school to become criminals? So they decide to kill the kids that still go to school and aren’t criminals yet further decreasing the population and increasing their problem. And they only kill like one class per a year so overall it will barely affect things. And the one survival is pretty much guaranteed to become a huge criminal now they’ve killed all their friends. You don’t just recover from that like it never happened.
@@rachelcookie321 See the thing is that presumingly only 1 class gets picked. This place is basically run like North Korea, and the program is both to strike fear in its citizens, and show like an example of how much power the government has and what is to come if you step out of line.
@@rachelcookie321 well obviously the movie kind of simplifies the story and a lot gets lost in translation. Plus this channel just did a basic overview of the movie, so actually watching the movie would give you more context as well as reading the book.
Fun Fact the creator of the game PUBG got inspiration from this movie and without
this movie we wouldn't have the BR genre of games today.
Cool
Xactly.....I love that game lot....
Not really but kind of.
Sorry to brust your bubble but BR genre sprung from the 1979 book "The long walk". This movie is based on a manga which in turn based on earlier famous works.
@@Sumirevins The Survivor, a short story written by Walter F. Moudy in 1965, had some Battle Royal themes for sure.
It was set during the 2050 Olympic war games between the United States and Russia.
In it, 100 soldiers from each side are sent into an arena to kill each other, broadcast on live television.
Any survivors are regarded as heroes, and basically able to get away with anything they want.
I wouldn't say the BR genre came from this, but I imagine influences keep going.
🤣😂 government “I don’t see how this could go wrong”
Therapists: “ahh the most likely survivors will be psychotic or have other mental illnesses making them prone to violence and a lack of empathy. Also when the generation after this comes in it will result in more kids with similar problems instead of more people of even temperament.”
Government: “Lalalalallaalalalaa”
Also there will only be a handful of kids going to college and very few graduates entering the work field. The economy is gonna go down super fast
To preserve the society we have to exterminate future generation, and especially those who are still in Highschool getting education, not those who dropped out and started committing crimes. Welcome to Logic 101. Film is great though.
@@meshach9510 Well, there's some details not explained here: It is stated in the movie that only one class of 42 students is chosen every year. So it wouldn't impact society that much, at least in terms of population.
The big thing is that they changed the backstory from the original book too much. In the book universe, Japan is in a totalitarian government, very similar to North Korea (it is said in the book that they are allies). The BR Act, which is the name of the law for the Battle Royale program, was made as a way to put fear and control the population. Every year, a class of 3rd grade junior high students is selected at random to be in the program.
@@caiomorgado1535 oh that makes sense. From the video I thought every school does this so I was under the impression only 1 student survives and graduates

Classic. Takeshi Kitano is great as always.
Exactly
They missed his best scene in the movie as well. Where everyone thinks he's dead, his phone rings and he gets up to answer it, eating a cookie before dying.
moral of the story: Always have a death note
lol i love how everyone is bullying that one guy who played Light talking about his death note

@@asu11 there was also another movie which he starred in and people laughed and joked how he used his power to kill people

Kitano was a badass. He was shot multiple times, get up to receive a call from his daughter, shot the phone with real gun, eat last cookie, and die
Guess he's truly the King of Takeshi's Castle 😂
Love this film, it's a classic from Japan. After so many years it become popular again because of Battle Royale games.
Felt bad for the characters though, they deserved a better ending. Imagine if Kazuo is much reasonable character and actually worked together.
It is still a niche movie and not really all that popular outside of Japan. I personally like it but I don't know many people that have actually seen the movie.
I'd be willing to bet 9 out of 10 that play BR games have no idea about this movie so no idea where you get the idea that BR games make this movie popular.
@Safwaan It is a brutal and sad movie and not because of the killing aspect....everyone seems to ignore the reason the kids are there in the first place which is the actual sad part about the movie.

Ah yes Battle Royale, the reason I'll NEVER watch the Hunger Games movies.
Why?
@x The problem is both movies are based on books. The first Hunger games novel takes a lot from the novel Battle Royale (which the movie is based on) and the author of the Hunger games claims she never heard of Battle Royale. If she had just said yes she heard of it no one would actually have cared.
@@faelirra I doubt she stole the idea from BR....the Battle Royale and Dystopian genre existed well before the book and movie of BR came out.
@@joshmoats7981 Exactly. Lord of the Flies was one of the first concepts to come out where children try to govern themselves, but end up killing each other.
@@joshmoats7981 As a number of critical reviews have pointed out, THG similarities goes well beyond the theme: from the protagonists, to setting, to even specific scenes in THG, there is so much confluence with BR.
THG author's influences are the same, yet the author claims never to have known about BR.
Make of that what you will

Finally something I can enjoy.
I remember reading the manga like back in 2017, Im so glad it got a live action adaptation
Oh also, shogo (forgot the proper spelling) is much older in the manga. The ending was also kinda changed a bit too ngl
Actually, Shogo in the manga (and novel) is only about a year older than Shuuya and the others. The art style just makes him look like he's in his 30s 🤣🤣🤣 Ironically, the film version of the character is around 3/4 years older.
@@caitlinbrewer4843 wait fr he was actually almost the same age as them? I was always under the assumption that he was much older because of the style. My life is a lie 😭😭
@@overdosingontomatoes8619 yeah, the novel explains it better but Shogo was so badly injured in his own game that he had to spend the rest of the year in the hospital recovering and then had to repeat the 9th grade, which his how he was able to do the Program again. The film mentions he was held back 3 times (putting the film version of the character at about 18) which has raises some interesting questions. The book DOES describe Shogo as being extremely muscular with stubble, and in general looking a lot than the rest of the class. But, yeah, the manga... Exaggerates that aspect of his appearance 🤣🤣🤣
It is rare to see a japanese movie that is this much sane… and for the main characters to survive in the end
Best manga ever
The briefing on the rules of the contest are the best ever delivered. How to give bad news in an encouraging way. Newscasters should do this when reporting natural disasters and war atrocities and 9-11 and MAX 8 lawn darts.
