As a Chinese guy I always show up to drive throughs speaking English in a perfect North American accent and no one is ever impressed
Well because there's already a lot of Asian people in the states that were born there, so there's nothing surprising about it.
But a WHITE guy IN the states speaking fluent Chinese is a whole different thing.
Its like if a black guy spoke fluent Russian.

My husband and I was in a restaurant a Japanese restaurant he started speaking the girl said sorry I speak English lol. He is retired military and was stationed in Japan and he just likes to use it once in awhile.

@@Portrait-in-Black It is because I’m pretty introverted, and trying to go out of my way to actually talk to someone, but in a different language, and it turns out they don’t speak that language would be a very awkward situation to me. Besides the fact in the United States we live in a very soft and easy to offend society and for whatever reason there are people that get offended by that kind of stuff.

Now, if you just start speaking Spanish to every brown person you see without asking first, then maybe. :D Just ask in English if they speak whatever language, and then explain that you're working on it and always trying to practice.
This has got to be one of the best reactions yet! From her confused look, to how he quite literally knocked her off her feet she was so surprised! Had that wall not been there I think she would have fallen over from shock! I love this channel, and as some others have pointed out, it is such a positive and harmless "pranks" and almost always seems to get people opening up and brightens their day!

@@hwanniggles187 I've often heard people describe it as a certain "shape of the mouth". You just have a general sound when you're speaking in a particular language, which includes the non-words. Ums, uhhs, laughs, and even gestures can change when going from one language to another.
I think he laughs too much and is too proud of himself.
I briefly worked at a Chinese restaurant for a family whose children ran the counter in the summer because they spoke English but during the school year they needed someone to help during the lunch rush because the parents spoke very little English.
It took her a little bit but the mom warmed up to me and was excited when I made an effort to learn *some* Chinese. She started asking me to help her with mail, sorting into junk mail and mail she needed to keep and she was THRILLED when I asked if a certain name on the mail was hers, as she always had me call her by her last name because it was easier to pronounce.
She would ask me how to say things in English and was eager to learn. It was a great time and they fed me free lunch every day I worked in addition to my pay.
Make an effort to understand others and they often will appreciate it.

It sounds weird but I would be able to tell that you are Japanese, even if you hadn't mentioned it. Japanese have a distinct way of writing English, probably because of grammatical differences.
@@n3gi_ I get what you mean too. I've been speaking English my whole life but it's very ingrained in the culture here to text and type exactly how you speak. Though I like to still think I hide it well
I've watched dozens of these videos, and I just realized that Xiaoma is always shopping and buying from the people he films. So as well as delighting them by speaking their languages, he's also supporting their businesses, rather than simply co-opting them for his videos. It speaks to his character and integrity, and makes me enjoy his videos that much more.
Pretty sure the video covers the expenses.

@@joetyler835 It definitely covers the expenses for him, but the point is that he buys things, which helps the businesses. Im not saying it makes him a hero, but it is nice. Its just a added thing, it makes the people more pleasant and happy too. Especially since a fair amount of the people in his videos are hardworking immigrants who may have came from rough environments.
@@luminousdragon Yeah even for just street vendors, he could just walk and talk with them without buying say, their fruits, but he buys them. He could drop by a vendor and buy nothing and still earn money through video revenue and without supporting the restaurant/stall he is visiting.
He is making a ton of money off CZcams probably millions based on his subscriber count and view. Only right to give back a tiny fraction.

@modelotime Because it’s fun, if you’ve been learning a language for several months or years (depending on your dedication) you want to share your knowledge of the language to native speakers.
Im spanish and for years in school kids would tell me im not spanish because i am white. Sounds like the same reason they are suprised to see a white guy speak fluent spanish.

I'm from Hanover, Germany and we have many Chinese university and college students in this town. They're the most humble, lovely and respectful "strangers" here. I wish I could talk to them in Cantonese/ Chinese. Lovely "prank". 👍🙃

As a white guy who lived in Seoul for a year I recognize the expression of that woman 100% 😂 Ordering food or a package over the phone and then the delivery person looking around for a Korean when I was standing right there was a classic scenario. Makes me nostalgic ㅋㅋㅋ

@@startingtech3900 well it actually depends on the way you say it tho I know you mean well but it's probably because some people are actually offended because they can't tell if you're being polite or making fun of them, I'm a 19 year old half Spanish, Chinese and Filipino in the Philippines and I look like an American and most people who meet me try to speak in English but I can't tell if they're making fun of me or not...but I get that most of them make fun of me thinking I don't understand Filipino language.....but I don't actually get offended but I see how some people will automatically get offended

I think this new drive-thru idea where they don't see your face in the beginning is your best shot at getting genuine reactions and genuine content from now on because you've become so famous that most Chinese people in NYC will immediately recognize you if you just walk into a restaurant like you've been doing the past few years. You have literally dispelled the rude Asian stereotype. Language barriers can be a hell of a thing and when you speak a unique hard language has as Mandarin or fuzhounese or even English. It can be really isolating. And feeling isolated can make people a little defensive. I think it's amazing what you're doing bridging those gaps in our cultures is very important

Watch some serpentza videos. You get all kinds. Rude and generous. All asians are different of course but Chinese people are typically blunt and say the first things that come to their mind. A lot of the time it's not nice when your a foreigner but you just have to take it on the chin and keep it pushing.
I love this channel. It's kinda like playing a fun victimless joke on people, in the most positive way. Sets a good example for other youtubers that you don't have to harass or scare random people.
Just spend ten years learning something that isn't common for your race, culture or ethnic group 😆

This put a smile on my face man-always appreciate your goodwill toward ppl from other cultures, hooked on your videos as a Tamil guy who lived in China, I see you speak both!
A lot of people post clickbait “people said bad things about me when they didn’t think I understood” videos that are borderline racist or offensive because it’s always taken out of context. So I like this video because he’s actually being very respectful (supporting their business and quickly ordering food rather than wasting their time with a “prank”). You can tell how genuinely happy these people are to see someone who clearly appreciates their culture and language, and you can tell how happy he is that he’s making them happy.
I almost didn't watch as I thought it would be that sort of thing-CZcamsr just wasting ppl's time & using them for content. It wasn't though, it was really sweet & genuine and everyone enjoyed the experience. My feel good vid of the day, was not expecting that. ❤️❤️❤️

MS B You realize that when you patronize foreign businesses most of the time they talk about you in their language. It may be good or bad things they're saying. Maybe people should learn to watch what they say about others because you never know if they understand your language.
This is one of the best way of making people happy. I'm a white man and I learn African languages and the speakers of said languages are so happy when they find out about it. It's a heartfelt sentiment and I can never get tired of it

All we have is Panda Express. They’re always out of Teriyaki Chicken and the rest of their stuff isn’t as good as regular family owned Chinese places. I’d love if they had drive thrus.

I think that is awesome. My daughter took Japanese in college and we were at Narita Airport in Tokyo going through security when my daughter started talking in Japanese to an agent asking where the food court was and what was there. The agent jaw dropped and got a big smile on her face while she talked with my daughter in Japanese. She was stunned to see a Westerner speaking her native tongue. So proud of my daughter!

No, it's not quite like that. Your daughter only got that reaction because it was Narita Airport. The Japanese-speaking foreigners who pass through Narita are VASTLY outnumbered by the tourists, so of course she wasn't expecting her to speak Japanese. I've lived here for 46 years, and I can tell you that in 99 percent of places in the Tokyo area nobody bats an eyelid when I or any other foreigner speaks fluent Japanese. But if it were the Ginza or Roppongi or somewhere else where tourists and short-stay gaijin hang out, then, yes -- they might be surprised!
Well, that's because English is the Lingua Franca of the world at the moment, and tought as main courses in most of the world, so it isn't shocking to find someone speaking it, but finding people speaking your non-english native language can be surprising

For anyone learning a language, that’s like receiving the Olympic gold medal. We all dream of it.
In China you get that compliment a lot, deservedly or no. I got it within a year of starting to learn when I just said, “Uh huh, no, sure, okay” repeatedly and then gave an address and phone number. 😂
That said, his Chinese is great (better than mine), but there are some very white-sounding pronunciations sprinkled in there (肉，ròu, meat - hard to get right cuz the “Chinese” r is juuuust different enough; if we wanna get critical, 小, xiǎo, small - the x/sh distinction is tough). Over a speaker it probably sounds native or near-native, though, so kinda irrelevant - especially since language is ultimately about communication and socialization anyhow - just thought it might be interesting
I love the brightness of smiles and the surprises and laughter, not trying to sound weird about it, but it's really nice and fun to be able to share in these moments 😇 so thank you for sharing 😎

He's impressed that, by being able to understand and speak fluent Chinese, he can break down the barriers that are invariably there between people who don't share a common language, barriers that prevent one from ever being able to get a sense of who another person is, much less fully understand them. I guess I can understand your confusion if you're genuinely not familiar with phrases like "language barrier", "barriers to communication", "communication difficulty" and so on.

As a student of Mandarin I've had similar experience in Chinese restaurants here as well. Although my Mandarin is nowhere near this level yet, I'm always happy to see the spark in the eyes of Chinese speaking staff when I exchange a few polite sentences with them. It goes both ways, I'm also genuinely impressed by anyone speaking a few sentences in Czech, even if they have a heavy accent.

Watching the language barrier be torn down as a bilingual person is such a satisfying feeling, to see a wave of relief go over the people you talk to is so nice. It feels much more personal.

I can't help but wonder if you have some terabytes of videos, in this case, ordering food in Chinese, or did you just drive around ordering a ton of food in one day.

As an English speaker who was born, raised, and lives living in Quebec I find that speaking French to a French Quebecer immediately puts you on their good side regardless of what you’re talking about. Even if you’re not that great at French as long as you try they will slow down and make it easier for you to understand.
I’m also trying to learn German since my Mother’s family immigrated from Prussia in 1870 and I always wanted to learn the language of my great-great grandparents.

@@DragonQueenOfLittleEarth Germanic roots are mostly from the original Anglo-Saxon settlers (and some other Germanic tribes) as well as Scandinavian influence. Celts aren't Germanic, they are Celtic. They also didn't have that much influence over the English language.

I can communicate very basically in French and visited my grandmas side of the family who live just south of Quebec City (Saint-Frederic, Thetford Mines area). Can confirm, there were definitely kind people willing to slow down and talk with me ;P it was really nice of them

I’m half Korean, half Mexican but I grew up in Texas were there’s a huge Mexican population, so I always felt more connected to Mexican culture. My siblings and I can speak korean, but my parents always made speaking only Spanish mandatory at home since in the US it’s one of the most used languages other than English (korean, not so much). I visited my moms hometown in Mexico last year and I still remember seeing the relief in peoples faces when they realized they didn’t have to speak English to me or since I have more Asian features, whatever language they thought I spoke lol. also this one time, I was in busan visiting my dads brothers and I saw this foreign middle age lady looking lost. I went over and spoke to her in English thinking she was from the states. She said she was from Spain so when I busted out my Spanish she was so hyped, it made me realize how beautiful being multilingual is.

@@bishimbareu That's a real thing in Korea. Most people assume that if you're white you must be American. It didn't bother me as a Canadian, but my Russian friends were irked by it.

Im spanish but theres more chance of that woman speaking english than other any language, USA is the third country with the most population, and USA citizens are the 4th population who visit Korea the most (the first three places are taken by asian countries (china, Japan, Taiwan)) so its normal to assume she was american, the guy just spoke her in english which may be the most common language for white ppl

The reactions are always so wholesome. People appreciate others learning their language it means a lot to them to know their culture is everywhere and it’s loved around the world by many not just themselves.
Making the effort to learn a foreign language is very rewarding.
My dad learned french and went to Paris, and most people he talked to could speak English but appreciated even attempting to speak French.

I’ve been thinking how many of us generally expect foreigners to speak or at least understand English, and how often some even get mad if someone doesn’t speak it well “enough” yet, but we can learn from the people in the video. Look at how polite and genuinely happy they are! It’s heart warming.

There is worse. English speakers going to foreign countries, speaking english everywhere and not making a slight effort when people don't understand them. So many of them don't even try to say hello or thank you in the local language, and complain after that people are rude. This is so annoying !

Now i do live in netherlands and we are a very cultural country and it is true that alot do speak english. I've had the same experience after living in Italy for two years. I knew the language barrier would be a problem and that several departments and work centers throughout the base had Italian employees. Everything from the DMV, government motor pool, housing office, even the shipping/receiving shop had Italian people. Learning the language helped me accomplish tasks and I was called upon to translate at times. It paid dividends when traveling to Venice, Florence, Sicily and Rome. The locals were shocked that a black American Navy member took the time to learn their culture and then apply it on a regular basis. Many doors and opportunities came from being open minded.

When I was a teen working as a waitress, two Mexican customers were shit talking me in Spanish. So I decided to come back and take their drink orders in Spanish. They were quite mortified. And never would have expected little ol' blond haired, blue-eyed 17 year old white girl me had been studying the language for 5 years by that point. 🤣
Another time a friend of mine was speaking to her grandma in Romanian on the phone while out shopping. Some woman walked past her and muttered: "this is America we speak English". My friend shouted at her "I speak English just fine but do you mind if I talk to my grandma in Romania who doesn't?"
You never know who speaks what and it's not something you can judge just by looking at a person. Don't be an asshole. :)

Beautiful. It’s like when I used to sign with deaf people at my old job, the light in someone’s eyes when you speak to them fluently in their native language is all worth it. Every single language is beautiful and can make people feel at home and comfortable.
And deaf people are always SO excited to talk with you! I worked as a cook at a sandwich shop once and someone at the register couldn't take this guy's order, he was deaf and getting frustrated with the cashier. I saw what was happening and came over, resolved the issue, and had a small chat with the customer too ("where did you learn ASL??" and all that haha). When I turned around to get back to work, most of my coworkers were standing behind me, watching the exchange. They were flabbergasted lol

I took five years of ASL between HS and college and then happened to move to a community close to a lot of deaf families, so a a while ago when I was working in a grocery store I’d get a lot of opportunities to sign with some of them. They always made my day and I hope I made them a little happier too

That’s so awesome!! 😍 Love all these stories, question for the folks who are fluent in ASL- I noticed the op said they studied 5 years, so time spent learning is definitely a factor but any tips on where to start and how to better retain the knowledge of what you’ve learned? I am trying to learn and am typically pretty quick at picking up languages- well speaking them at least, 😅 I started learning French in 1st grade, I think it helps me with different intonations that don’t necessarily come easy to the majority of Americans- but my grammar is atrocious- anywho when I try to sign, I just get so frustrated. I have trouble even getting my hands to make the correct shape and can’t seem to remember a single sign, even after going over it a bunch of times. I have a friend who is deaf, we text and sometimes we chat with a notepad, plus she reads lips incredibly well but she shouldn’t have to. I want her to know I care and value her, I REALLY want to learn but I feel like something’s just not working- it’s a disconnect from my brain to my hands or something idk? I would definitely appreciate any tips though! 🥺 🙏🏾

It's way more personal.
It's specially impactful when your abroad.
For example it wouldn't be as impactful to talk to a foreigner that's fluent in your language, it would be very neat that's for sure. On the other hand imagine that you've been living in a different country for awhile or even just visiting, hearing someone communicate in your native language is just pure joy, it has a very comforting. Now add the fact that he isn't Chinese into the mix and it's now a spectacle as well lmao.
Learning another language and speaking it to native speakers has to be one of the best ways of demonstrating respect for them and their culture.

I actually have to disagree with this a bit from my own personal experience. In things that I do, international travel, international travelers, and people who have migrated here, especially from Asia, tend to have so very little desire to go back. They come and stay as long as their Visa will let them and often longer and come back as soon as they possibly can. The only reason many of them don't move here is because of their status as a professional athlete whom many are government sponsored, they are required to live in that country. Not to say this is the case every time, just my vast personal experience being around a lot of foreigners, migrants, and international travelers from Asia.

I find this to be particularly true for Americans, since most of us never learn a foreign language. People are always shocked to find out I speak their language. They always assume I have family from whatever country.
