Hello you
I feel like if it’s a 9/10, it’s usually a great bop. If it’s a 10/10, it’s a horrifying experience that leaves you wanting to be held. Melon why do you always love albums that are terrifying?
To give an album 10/10 after just a few days of listening it must hit hard really on an emotional level. Being terrified is as strong of a emotion as it gets. Spellling showed the other side of the spectrum but joy and being enchanted is just not as strong of a feeling in the majority of the time imho.

I was really impressed with the way this record was better than Caligula. One would think that to top that she would have to go even heavier, but this album isn’t that. It’s a lot more subtle, but it’s so much more gratifying when taking it as a whole. I liked Caligula, however some of the jumpscare aesthetics felt a little gimmicky to me, but this kinda feels like the record I always wanted her to make after hearing that one. The production just feels way more full and Lingua’s vocals just click with me so much more on this one.

Listening to this album in the wake of her horrifying experience with Alexis Marshall weaves in a truly terrifying new layer to what is going on here. It feels like a liberation but also a cry for help.
I drove through Centralia earlier this year.
My grandparents live 30 miles south, so I grew up visiting this area a lot. Appalachian / coal mining Pennsylvania is a one of a kind place. It’s almost claustrophobic and overwhelming when you see the blight left by strip mining. There’s still so much abject poverty, and violence against women, and open racism. Yet, there’s these gorgeous mountains with animals and plants not found anywhere else in the United States.
What stood out to me the most when I visited Centralia was that the only building left from the demolition an Eastern Orthodox Church that overlooks the remains of the town and a commentary that’s remained untouched despite a lot of the rest of the town being destroyed by the fires. It’s an eerie place, and it’s not easy to describe how weird and unsettling it is until you see it for yourself.
P.s. there’s quite a few good documentaries on CZcams about Centralia and the fire that are worth watching.
Appalachia and coal mining areas have been hit hard by like… everything in the past 50 years. Deindustrialization, the collapse of union membership, the opioid epidemic, not to mention COVID and the decreasing demand for coal

The album is like a church service in the middle of the black plague. It's excellent
Thank you for bringing me to music closer than ever. Pieces like TPAB, Some rap songs, Atrocity Exhibition, and most certainly Madvillainy really got me to thinking further and having a deeper connection to music.
Madvillainy>all, come at me
Those albums were all the perfect segways as a rap fan to dabble into the much, much broader music world.
Truly a masterpiece. I’m glad to see Lingua Ignota receive the praise she deserves. Can’t get enough of this record!
Cool
(Goes back to listening to tpab)
I agree with you, she's great. But my metalheads homies... they don't agree so much.
@@randomavenger3048 I know many metalheads who like her. It’s all in what “kind of” metalhead you are, there’s definitely more than one type, imo largely generationally split, but there’s more to it than just that of course.
Looks like another wave of “Every 10 given by Anthony Fantano” videos coming up!!
i don't even listen to these albums, i just get hyped when he gives albums 10s
This one is not for everybody
You’re doing yourself a disservice
The expression on the Crimson King's face is a pretty well suited reaction to this record
The vinyl sounds absolutely incredible, also got a shirt with a quote from my favorite song on the album, "Where does your light not shine?" I legitimately weeped in awe of this album on my first initial full album listen, really an incredibly harrowing, beautiful and fucking intense album in all of the best ways.
DAMN was it good tho?
Cannot agree more. Can't wait to listen to it!
2021 is now a year where Anthony gave 2 10/10’s. Wow, man.
@Jose Olvera It’s awesome to see
Gonna be 3 when donda drops 😏
In a two month span as well
Gonna wait until he gives ten 2/10s this year
@@joshybruh9099 yeah in 2025
Why is it that all the albums he rates as a ten always tend to be terrifyingly traumatizing
cause fantano is a masochist who loves to be abused
I love all the characters she plays on the album. Each song has a very specific narrator that tells a striking story, and that gives the album a cohesive feeling. And the use of samples is sparser, but so much more effective. Like how the CNN sample completely recontextualizes the finale, which may initially feel like an uplifting hymn.
This is the seventh album in the history of music

It honestly makes me extremely happy and excited to see just how jazzed Anthony is by this one. And no, I'm not ready, but here we go!
This review hits a little different right now.
I was raised in a cult so this album is gonna be a really interesting listen.
Nice eye ball
@@TristanMundell thanks. It's mine

How did it go?
@@ArizonanSummer PTSD
As someone who grew up in small town Pennsylvania I feel like this album captures the creepy Appalachian vibes really well.
Yeah! For sure!!! I was coming down here to say the same exact thing. Going to the abandoned highway and listening to this album is going to be an experience lol
@@chaboinate2471 Is that hole in the highway still smoking? Haven't been there in a decade.
"...very few female artists crack his top 10s..."
Robert Christgau, 2019
I mean, he wasn’t wrong in 2019
Man, I forgot about that. I know Robert Christgau is supposed to be a big deal but that dude gives the impression of being so far up his own ass that I'm surprised he hasn't collapsed into a singularity. "I don't WATCH reviews, I READ WRITING because I'm continually using my EARS to listen to music. Anthony Fantano is a name I BARELY recognize." I'm not even defending Melon here, God knows I don't agree with him about 90% of the time, but Christgau just seems absolutely insufferable.
@@Tommytickler10 Agreed. Maybe I'm off the mark here, but it seems like Fantano has made a more concerted effort to acknowledge female artists after Christgau made that comment.
in 2019 there were zero formal 10s to female artists from fantano so
@@thrillshow That's definitely the case
Glad to see some recognition on this channel for Christian rock
Lol...

This album, I literally am a minute into the first track and I already feel like I'm transported to another ethereal plane. This shit slaps harder than my mom did when I was freaking out as a small child in church.
Just curious, how did you like the album in full?
@@ArizonanSummer he died
Since Monday, I've been re-listening to parts of your prior interview with Kristin (from June 2020), and I was surprised by how much I related to some of the personal details that emerged in her stark, intense sincerity and brilliance- details that I missed during my first slightly distracted listen.
Obviously looking forward to the inevitable follow-up conversation with her about all this in the next week. I'm from Central Pennsylvania and lived there for 25 yrs, so you may imagine how this record's atmosphere just resonates with & makes sense to me beyond anything I could rationally articulate, ha. So, yeah, let's dig in to even more of that! Thanks so much for championing such challenging and rewarding music.
I forgor 💀
I heard the album last night. It's flawless and honestly took my mind to places it hadn't been before. It defies any boundaries of genre or even era. This is the kind of music that will never cease to be powerful. And the closing track is one of the best you'll ever hear.
i don't think sinner get ready is meant to be an album for enjoyment. i think it's supposed to be a cathartic listen. the emotion i feel when listening to her music is NEVER joy. and i think there's something beautiful in that.
After listening to this album I realized that Anthony and I have very different music tastes
So you didn’t like this album?
@@R-H-B not rly lol. Just not for me
Every 10/10 has either a black and white cover or a three word title. We can deduce from these data points that those two factors are the only relevant criteria in reviews.
A Venn Diagram:
Black and White: TPAB, You Won't Get What You Want
Both: The Money Store, The Turning Wheel
Three Word Title: To Be Kind, Kids See Ghosts, This Album
@@radioguy1667 Don’t forget Die Lit
Wait, does Pink Flag count?

I'm a notorious Sinner and even I wasn't ready for this album score
I can't really listen to this as like, a jam. But it's a pretty amazing piece of art. It sounds like Dark Souls: the Album. The statement about it placing you in like a scene from American Midsommar or something is spot on.
Truly the dark souls of the music genre
I don’t think it’s possible to listen to this as a jam. I’ve tried casually listening to The Order Of Spiritual Virgins while around my house and I just find myself focusing on it without meaning to, leaving me unable to do what I was doing before until I turn it off
Listening to this album felt like getting stabbed relentlessly with the most meticulously beautiful and detailed knife ever made
That’s the most accurate description of this album possible
It's the first couple to get a 10!
Congratulations Alexis Marshall (Daughters) and Kristin Hayter (Lingua Ignota)

I don't think they're together anymore though, but for a brief moment they were the most powerful underground couple out there

This is truly a historic year
Let's see what will be his favorite album this year
I love this video's thumbnail. It's like he's angry that he has to give two albums a ten within the span of about a month.
This is my favorite album of 2021. It’s a true work of art. It moved me to tears.
as a wise man named dj khaled once said, “ANOTHER ONE”
“We the best music”
Khaled get ready
So wise
I genuinely couldn't finish this album, because of how emotionally and psychologically overwhelming it is. And that is the biggest praise that I can give.
Kristin Hayter is a fucking genius! She's taken a horrific and traumatic experience, and created something extraordinary out of it, that I'm sure is going to leave an impact on alot of people. I really hope she continues being unforgiving and uncompromising with her music, cause it's clearly working.
I think it's really cool you can see value in the record, even if you had to retreat from the experience it gave you. I'm kind of reevaluating some of my harsher mental takes right now, so thank you!
Anthony I appreciate that for 2020 (a dark year for many people, for many reasons) your AOTY was something fun and uplifting.
I don't know if that was a conscious decision on your part - but it's what that year needed 👊
This album makes Daughters feel like an easy listen.
So... more screaming I suppose? I've avoided listening to this specifically because I hate jumpscares in general, music definitely included.
@@Anton-wk8lv No screaming. It’s not even rock. It’s slow, haunting folk. Very theatrical. Sounds like a sacrificial ritual.
