ABANDONED UNITY HOUSE RESORT IN THE POCONOS

  • The Poconos have always had a reputation for being a prime getaway within Pennsylvania. Nestled in the mountains, adventurers can ski or snowboard, lovers can be alone, or a busy family can catch up on some much-needed bonding time. The Unity House Resort began its life in 1892 and has sat vacant near Bushkill since 1989.
The resort initially opened in 1892 as Forest Park, a summer park for German-speaking Jewish people. It was sold after WWI.
In 1924, the resort was sold again, this time to the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, which was at the time the largest women's union in the country.
The Garment Union opened it as the Unity House, and it operated as a vacation spot for garment workers for many years.
The Unity Resort opened to the public for four years before it closed for good in 1989.
The Unity House has stood abandoned ever since. The grounds look untouched, except for the years of decay that have aged them.
Surprisingly, there is not much graffiti on the property, like there is on many abandoned properties.

In 1984 -- I had the pleasure of performing here. joined another bunch of actors who where performing here at the time --- we did 4 shows all summer long -- they were: A TRIBUTE TO BROADWAY , IRVING BERLIN REVIEW , A BOOK SHOW "WHERE'S CHARLIE" , and in the morning for the kids we did, HANSEL AND GRETAL. I cried when you showed when you showed the theatre I have pictures of me and my family , when they came and stayed one Summer, of us in the Lobby . My mother belonged to the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, and she loved it up there. I remember the bar, which you showed, where we would go after a show and relax , so sad to see that way it now , I had know idea it gone ti ruin, I use to call the Theatre " the little gem stuck in the mountains" because it was, one beautiful theatre and the care taker at the time made sure it was keep that way. Thank you for sharing this , it still makes in very sad .

I worked as the dining room Maître D for about 4 years, dining room sat over 1200 people we served 3 meals a day plus parties at night. I wonderful experience. Got married on the dock in 1988 and had a fabulous wedding in September of that year. There were many waiters, kitchen people and housekeepers that worked during the summer months for years. A classic summer resort owned by the ILGWU.

I worked in the theatre, ran the spots, lighting, help to build the sets. The old guy in charge of the theatre was Bill Marlatt and I continued on with my work on many other stages through the country. Danny

I was athletic director from 1978-1981. It was a great experience. To see it's condition is heartbreaking.

Me and a friend decided to do a little trip there to explore today- only got to see few houses or so before alarms went off in a back building with double doors. Will definitely be going back... it's such a beautiful resort.

Visited here a few days ago, parked at North High School and biked down. Explored most of the rooms and main building which look the same as shown in this video. We stayed away from the theater and other buildings over there even though I really want to see it due to there being trucks in the parking lot of the new Arts arena on that side of the property. We did not see any people, but did see some heavily traveled atv paths between buildings that we tried to stay away from in case someone was patrolling.

Do they really heavily patrol this area? Seems unlikely and would be very expensive to do that for a property that's so far gone...

Yes. Because it is now owned by the parent company that owns the gun club across the road. If you decide to check it out... please be careful. The first day we were there, we saw no one. The second day, a guy on a quad with a gun showed up and was yelling at us saying we had no right to be there (at at that point, we were on the property but OUTSIDE the gate... so it would have probably of been worse had he found us inside.

No, it is not. I believe it is owned by the gun club that is located across the street (but I may be wrong).
