Because sadly Oscar's are more determined by how much money a big studio is willing to pay for their oscar campaign rather than the quality of the actual movie. Because this movie and inglorious basterds were by far the best from that year.

I think it just flew too far under the radar. Most people have not heard of it due to not getting massive marketing and it was relatively low budget. Most people who have seen it, to my knowledge stumbled upon it or had a friend recommend it.
