- See what it takes to assemble the clutch drums in the GM TH400 automatic transmission.
With some know-how, these clutch packs can be fairly simple to assemble. However, overlooking some seemingly small details, during assembly, will likely result in headaches on the road test, and could result in a repeat transmission failure.
See what it takes to build the TH400 Clutch Drums:
1). Forward Clutch.
2). Direct Clutch.

Kudos to these guys that can make a living working on these old cars
It's hard to comprehend how they designed & manufactured such a complex unit!
Appreciate the video.
It must require quite an imagination.

Appreciate the extra detail on the snap ring installation at 21:32
While I do like the amazon links, I notice a perennial problem over the years: listings die where part numbers may still be good. It might be a bit of trouble, but listing actual oem and part number will stand up better over time. Great vid series, and the attention to detail is excellent. .
It has been an ongoing problem, for sure. That's a great idea.
Unfortunately, there's a character limit for the video description...and it's already up against the limit.
A few years ago, I was building an online store, to sell transmission parts. However, I quickly realized that there was not enough time in the day to operate the store and simultaneously operate this YT channel.
When I can get more hands on deck, I hope to revisit the idea of an online store. This way the links will be more dependable.
Thank you for your input regarding the links.
Appreciate your feedback on the video series.
@@SouthpawAutoworksMaybe you could just link your own website in the description, then use your site to publish the Amazon/eBay links w/ part description. I’m using your Amazon links where ever possible, but like the previous poster mentioned, some are dead already.
Great video. I rebuild about 10 TH400s a year and have trouble finding good used pumps and reaction carriers.
10 per year, right on.
Definitely getting harder to come by some of these things. I cringe at the thought of how many older, but still sought after, transmissions have been sent to the crusher/scrap.
I picture a trans with some smoked clutches, but perfectly good hard parts, that could be salvaged.
Your channel is the BEST of them All! Makes it a little confusing as to some things like how does one get all the necessary things from one source. And is there a preference on what company to purchase their rebuild parts from?
😎
A couple of things: This is a very good series. I'd never seen the inside of a transmission but my RV lost forward movement. Using your series and a rebuild kit from NAPA that only included seals and friction plates I'm sitting in the American Legion parking lot and rebuilding it. I'm reassembling and had 2 wavy rings left over. Google lens identifies them as fwd and direct apply rings. I don't see them in your video. I found a schematic so I have an idea where they go and I have to open the drums again to install them. Are they necessary? Also, since I'm doing this to become mobile again and I don't have the TransGo shift kit I wish you had identified the location of the check balls directly instead of in reference to the shift kit. Thanks for your effort in supplying these videos. Well done!
Do you bench build transmissions and ship them back? Where are you located? And.......do you sell kits for the TH400? And parts?
Great series for someone like me. I’m going to build my first 400 one part,if I need it,is the accumulator from Amazon not available.can you recommend another? Thank you
Glad you're enjoying the series.
Bummer about Amazon. Wish there was a more reliable method.
Neither one of my pistons has a check ball, this transmission is a rebuild from somewhere else. I bought the truck as is. The transmission went out. As I take it apart, I discovered both pistons don't have check ball holes in neither of them! What do I do now?
Will an aluminum drum hold up with teflon seals if it doesn't have a liner in it.
Do the pistons come in different thicknesses? I tore one apart and it has a dished steel at the bottom where the wave plate would go. If I replace to a wave plate, I am way off on the play. I have way too much even with all thick steels.
The link for the upgraded case bushing is for a faucet splash pad. Lots of other items are unavailable, like the sprag and pump gears. Any other sources for these parts you can suggest? Thank you.
Thank you for the heads up.
I'm looking into this right now.
All of the TH400 links have been inspected. The ones that were listed as "currently unavailable" have been updated. And yes, the kitchen faucet one, too.
Unfortunately, it looks like this may be an ongoing issue. A number of the listings that were updated, stated that they only had a few in stock...sometimes even showing only "1 in stock."
When time permits, I'll see about partnering with a company that can reliably provide parts/tools.
Thanks again for the heads up.
Is it possible to get new parts to make a new thm400? I have an old 86 Chevy G30 and my transmission is going. Just want to know how much building a new one would cost me.
G30, right on.
Overhaul kits are readily available. You can find links to overhaul kits, and other items, in the video description. Current pricing can be identified by clicking on the links.
