    Good stuff. I would like to note for folks, that the old aluminum 400 apply piston is .060 THICKER than the 97 up 80e aluminum piston. If using an 80e piston you must use the 80e metal wave plate on top of the apply surface, if you don't use the wave plate your first intermediate steel in the stack will hit the beveled center support snap ring before the piston comes to complete rest in the bore. I have both Pistons here, and the difference is .060! If needed I have a pdf that clearly shows the difference and why the wave plate MUST be used if anyone needs. I prefer the older thick th400 apply piston personally in my 400s.

      @@mikehlad9775 no prob at all Mike, there's not a lot of information out there explaining this difference. I've seen a LOT of modded 400s over the years that have a 80e piston installed.....with no wave plate at all, not good. Easier to just use the 400 thick piston if you can find it.

      So is the 91-96 the same as the th400 aluminum piston and only the 97 and newer different? Can you give the thickness of each? I have an 80e in mine on the stand, but I'm not sure if it's early or late. Thanks

    What is the difference between the tan stock type clutches the 400s use verses the high energy clutches? I've read the high energy don't grab as good but take more heat better. 4l80s use high energy bands too. What is advantage or disadvantage of using high energy material for clutches and bands?

    Hello , I am new new to your channel , and I have a Question , I have a 1972 Nova that has a TH350 , I want to beef it up , I thought about putting a 700r4 in it but that's just going to add more cost between the shifter and driveshaft , but I know there are parts from the 700r4 that will work in the TH350 , i was just wondering which ones and would what might need to be changed ?

    Thanks for the video. Question. Im running a 66’ th400 behind a mild 454. I have a 3 clutch int. Setup that has a clutch pack clearance of 0.085” when measuring between the pressure plate and the first friction. Is this ok? Not much info as to what the clearance should be. ~0.09” steels, straight frictions, stock snap ring.

    Can I use an external trans brake solenoid where the modulator goes with a stock valve body and a transgo reprogramming kit on an early th400?

    • @mountainsgarage
      @mountainsgarage  Před 3 lety

      Other mods to the valve body and transmission would be required to make your own transbrake, and the reprogramming kit would not be needed as no automatic shifting after the modifications.

    Sharing my misfortune. Added a 4L80E Inter. stack and you can't use the .275 flat backing plate or your direct drum will hit the plate and hang it up in 3rd. What he is using is 91-98 backing plate which I will hopefully get Tuesday. I would leave a pic of the scoring marks if I could.

    Trying to figure out if all stock th400 used the same thickness intermediate snap ring? I ordered a hd snap ring thats .108" thick and was curious if the original snap ring was thinner than that so i could get a thin steel ordered to make up the difference in clearance.

    • @mountainsgarage

      I don’t follow what you are asking. Yes the HD snap rings are thicker, and can be had in various thicknesses.
      The thicker the better I think.
