- I Flew The Finnish F/A-18 Display in DCS! | Best Hornet Demo Ever - this in my opinion is the best F/A-18 demo in history. Far better than the Swiss F/A-18 and the US Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet Demo. It was fun trying to practice this enough times to get it +/- like the real Finnish Air Force Hornet display from RIAT 2019.

Awesome! I'm blown away from how accurate you recreated that!
Thanks, to be honest I was also a bit surprised how close they were after I played the real life one and my one side-by-side haha
Even the cloud layer was correct. Awesome re-creation!
Thanks! Yeah that worked out pretty good somehow!
I sent this video to a Malaysian Hornet WSO and he was very impressed. The bit at 13:20 is very challenging. Good job!
Huh, sweet!! Thanks! Now we just need to find the Finnish Demo pilot that flew this originally haha
This is f***g brilliant DCS flying mate! Congratulations on your research, passion, and skills. Well done!
Thanks! Very kind! Stay tuned for a sick Harrier demo next :)
That was some great flying Sir. *Salute*
@command T it was a pleasure to watch that Demo, enjoyed it, very precise.
hope to see this demo at VFAT 2020 looks Amazing, nice editing as well.
Thanks Maverick!
Impressive work ! Well played !!
Thanks!! Appreciated :)
Never seen your channel before this video. I'm now happily subscribed! Wonderful demo, you flew it amazingly
Thanks!! You may also enjoy a Harrier demo I recreated recently :) czcams.com/video/EFHc-iACFw4/video.html
@@CommandT Yes! I already watched it and enjoyed a lot. I'm giving a view (and a like) at many of your vids, especially the demos
@@TheMiGger Ah great :)
Blah! I wanna see you do this in a B737 ... now THAT would be some badass'ness!! Excellent video my friend. I really like the discipline of sticking to the pattern.
Cheers! Have a funny suspicion a 737 would fall apart after the first maneuver haha
Greetings from Finland! You have done amazing job! :)
Thanks!!
Such a sweet, fantastic, thrilling Demo show 😍
This was awesome. You are very good.
Great flying! You reproduced the demo surprisingly well.
Now imagine doing that with full g-forces!
No problem! Bring it on!! :D
Awesome job man!
Very impressive flying sir 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks!!
Very nicely done sir!!!
Thanks! 🙏
That is some impressive flying man!
Thanks :)
That was a joy to watch!
Glad you liked it! Stand by for something similar with the Harrier coming shortly! :)
Loved it. Great stuff!
Thanks man!
That was awesome Dude! Good Job!
Subbed and liked!
Thanks John!! :)
I wanna see the pilot react to this😂
Me too!! I'll take over his job once he needs to retire :P
Looks really good!😉

Good Stuff man
Wow awesome flying man! :D I hope the Finnish pilot see's this and talks with you so you can do an actual flight in real life ^_^
Haha, I wish! That would be class :)
I'm so glad the algorithm sent me here, these are epic!
It's rare that the algorithm gods are favouring me but I'm glad they did on this occasion :)
That was amazing
Very Kind, thanks!!
This was amazing. New subscriber alert 🔥
Thanks man! And thanks for subbing!! Working on a real life recreation of a Harrier display. Should be even more impressive :)
@@CommandT looking forward to it
Amazing air show by the finish pilot and equally amazing recreation by you.
I tried to replicate the first part until the falling leaf like manoeuvre. It's as you say that the DCS Hornet doesn't seem to have the same nose authority in a pitch down manoeuvre. I tried the spin recovery switch and it did seem to give me more stab deflection in the pitch down when enabled.
Apparently in the new iteration of the F/A-18C flight model ED will give it much more nose authority. Can't wait for that day!
spectacular video.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
This video was badass. A couple things for reference. In the UK, there are regulations for fast jet demos. During displays, fast jet pilots have to stick to the 230 metre line, which is denoted by orange blocks, for visibility reasons. This means the aircraft stay at a safe distance whilst being at a close enough distance for entertainment. Another reason why the Hornets in Europe have such a high nose authority is due to the fact that they have a 0 Angle of Attack (AoA) upgrade which removes the limiter and allows them to have more agility whilst flying. Hope this helps! Awesome Video buddy!
Thanks Matt! Both very interesting bits of info. I mean I presumed they always takeoff and take an offset to satisfy UK airshow regs but I did not know it is 230m. Thanks for that :)
You can use the G-Limiter bypass on the Hornet in DCS too, you use it quite a bit in hairy moments. Spin Recovery is modeled too.
@@CommandT Not sure if you're aware (you seem like you probably are) but you use hold the NWS/PADDLE DISENGAGE switch to override the G-Limiter. It will stress the airframe and break systems in the jet though if you exceed it too far... Also, give the spin recovery mode a run.
@@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ I have not pulled the paddle here, and the spin recovery switch is not used in the real demo afaik :)
@@CommandT Oh, I know. I wasn't implying otherwise! Just a useful feature to know if ya haven't used it!
Nicely done.
Hi BIGNEWY! Many thanks! :)
Hi captain, great video, amazed by your precision there. I wonder how you managed to get all these speed infos and etc... cheers!
Just watching his left MPCD and the occasional glimpse of the speed in the HUD. But mostly just very luck guesstimations! Cheers! :)
Spanish F/A-18 demo from Siaullai, back in 2019, was quite awesome
I shall have a look, thanks!
Nice! You need VR man! Whole new experience, you'll love it!
Thanks. I had the Reverb G2 and got rid of it. Unlikely will go back until ED implement multi-core support as making that thing run smoothly required enormous sacrifices in visual fidelity :( But yes, VR is the future for sure. Can't wait till it get's a bit more optimized.
@@CommandT I got the Oculus Rift a few years back. Agreed it's not the most crisp details but I still get about 60FPS. Funny thing, I don't think I can go back to a monitor at this point. See you on the flight line my friend!
@@DukeMarenge Oh don't gte me wrong - going back to a 2D monitor is very depressing but I felt like I had no choice. I should have my NVidia 3090 arrive shortly so I might re-try VR again in the very near future :)
@@CommandT Ooh nice, is the Reverb G2 wireless? If yes, use the hard wire connection if available. Frame rates drop dramatically through wireless. I'm running NVidia 1080 with 6GB and it works fine for me. If your system seems to be a little sluggish , in the search prompt type "CMD", it will bring up your Command Prompt : Windows\System32: Open as an Admin by right clicking and select run as Administrator. Type the following, it's a fix for the OS and won't change any files, not restarts or anything like that. In the Command Prompt, Type: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth /Source:repairsource\install.wim . That is a copy of the Win10 OS directly from Microsoft IT tools on their website. After your run that, in the command prompt type: SFC /SCANNOW. That will double check the OS to make sure it it running smoothly.
It won't delete any files or make any changes like a Restore, the command compares the basic OS of your system to the Win10's online and replaces and damaged files. It's actually a quick way of stopping malware as well.
@@DukeMarenge Ah thanks fo the tips there. G2 is not wireless. I sold it ages ago but since I'm about to recieve my new 3090 through the post I might re-visit VR and re-read your advice then. Thanks for that! :)
awesome!
very very impressive!!!
Well done
Awesome job!! I would like to see this performance from outside view too. Erinomainen suoritus!
Thanks! I'll have a look at the track file and see what it looks like from the outside. If it's decent enough I might make a video out of it :)
Awesome 👍
Cheers!! :)
That's so impressive! I wanna fly it myself. Can we get this manouvers list anywhere from you?
You did amazing considering you didn't use the overrides (that's how the demo pilot was able to push and pull further/quicker).
But really really good stuff
Thanks! You think he was using the spin recovery switch?
@@CommandT I think he's referring to hitting the paddle to override the FCS, though I doubt the demo pilot used that as it's a bit of a no-no.
@@quarkmachine The paddle only increases the G limit. As far as I'm aware it has no effect on slow speed AoA/ nose authority. Plus they wouldn't use the paddle to pull more G in an airshow, so I am still not sure what exactly Robert was referring to.
Belle maîtrise de l'avion et du programme, bravo..
Merci!! :)
wow! great!
Hey ya'll, if you guys know of any fighter jet demo videos filmed from the cockpit please link them in the comment section below! Would be super interesting to see.
this is one of my favorites

Hey man great video! Have you checked out the PACAF - F-16 Demonstration team before? They have a phenomenal pilot Capt. Jacob “Primo” Impellizzeri. He puts on a great F-16 demo that's aggressive czcams.com/video/sKmdR66MjgQ/video.html and czcams.com/video/telTkqGQaE8/video.html Then this one has a cockpit view of him, which is fantastic czcams.com/video/1NTL5HMsOao/video.html Also I know this aircraft isn't in DCS technically but they have a awesome Saab JAS 39 Gripen demo video which shows the cockpit view, outside and a G meter. Really good aggressive demo czcams.com/video/eXaPfUs6sQw/video.html
@Ataberk Karatas Ah yes, the only thing is I currently don't have the F-16 but I definitely will be getting it at some point. need to set up a pressure side stick and all that to make it feel realistic. I will definitely look into doing this demo at some point though!
Can you do the US Air Force F-16 Viper Demo?
czcams.com/video/X3NzcwbBel4/video.html
@@Bloxsonbara The F-16 has been requested by quite a few folk but I haven't got the F-16 module atm. Once I get it, definitely :)
Nice!!! 👍😎👍
Cheers!
In the barrel roll at 7:10, how is the input like? Full left rudder and full left roll? Or the roll input is small but full left rudder? Also, do you pull a lot to keep the AOA high which hit about 30 degrees, or slight pull is enough?
Awesome video! FYI with the hornet you want to just fly it into the runway without flaring, aiming for around 6-800ft/min descent rate, whilst on speed AOA.
Thanks! And I know this, but this is not how the Finish pilots land at airshows - they grease it on :)
@@CommandT You know I was thinking the entire time writing that "this quite has a great attention to detail, I wonder why he didn't do a typical landing".......should of guessed, it was another detail haha
@@jamesseddon1637 Ha, thanks!
join us, we need a finnish f18 demo flying on dcs
Can you please write the name of the system to note aerobatic maneuvers?
Mate, very nicely done! Apologies if this was requested elsewhere in the comments but could you share the time of day and cloud preset you used here? I'd love to replicate it for my personal training missions :). Cheers!
It's been so long ago I would have no idea now, sorry! Either way it was nothing special. You may end up using a cloud preset and time of day that looks even nicer :)
Do the CF-18 hornet demo !
Very nice. You’ve inspired me to try much harder! I’m an retired 737 guy, but if I’d had this sort of gear when I was younger, I’d have been practising all the time! (Until I got married, that is! 🥴) I am a VR convert, what do you think?
VR is awesome, increases immersion so much! Do what you want to do and enjoy DCS :)
Ah glad to hear! I tired VR (Reverb G2) and had to go back to a 2D screen unfortunately. Loved the feeling of being "inside" the plane but hated the performance. Graphics sacrifices to run it smoothly were not worth it for me, so as depressing as it was, I had to go back to a 2D screen. In a year or two when ED employ multi-core support and do some more VR optimization then I will be more than keen to switch across to VR. For now though I feel we are not quite there yet. For me anyway.
@@CommandT Yes, VR takes a little bit of time to get used to, and it’s true it’s complicated for performances.
But I never managed to get used to the Track IR, so VR was welcomed for me, and no way I can get back to screen now 😅
Awesome display, great job 👍🏻
The normal FCS on the hornet even lets you do the Finnish Hornet Demo? They have their own FCS updated for Finnish Air Force. BTW this is freaking amazing!! I’ve been wondering how they do the maneuver at 6:10, and my understanding of how to get that done is pull the nose up then input the right rudder and aileron, right?
Thanks Ah they have their own FCS? Interesting.
Just do full right rudder and use whatever aileron you need for it to stay in that plane of maneuver.
@@CommandT yes as explained in this video at 1:35 czcams.com/video/DwZLZKSQC-Q/video.html
Thanks for the tips
@@carrierlandinghdlegacyhorn2686 @Command T No, I think that is just the latest FCS for the Legacy Hornet derived from the Super Hornet projects, it's not a special Finnish-made FCS. The new FCS, other mission softwares and EPE motor upgrades are available to most export customers notably Finland, Swiss, Australia and Malaysia. I showed this video to a Malaysian WSO and he said they actually tried this a few times. The maneuver at 13:20 is quite hard to get right. Anyway there are actually more substantial upgrades being offered for export customers recently, notably AESA and all new computers.
@@mimimimeow ah ok thanks. So it’s not specially upgraded for Finnish Air Force
@@mimimimeow Ah that's super interesting. Just saw this reply. Thanks for that!
That stall turn u said back there looks like a j-turn.
Think you may be a bit wasted on commercials sometime my man. You've come a long way since Flight Sim on the old PC haha.
I really don't think I have! Think I'm still that same kid, just the graphics in pc sims got much better haha.
Could you make a video showing the Hornet from the same external point of view that is seen in the real video? From this view it could be appreciated more precisely how good is the flight model in DCS.
I had a look at the external view, didn't like it very much. When put next to the real thing looks a almost underwhelming - not enough vapour, not enough nose authority etc. The flight model for the F-18 is good in DCS but still not quite good enough. Mirage is MUCH better. I'll do a video with that - will look much closer to the real thing when viewed externally I think.
@@CommandT any chance you still have some of that external footage to share?
Master caution was for trim not being set for take off...
You can literally see that he has take off trim though. Probably just a glitch.
@@hurrdurrimaburr Flap on half give a 12 trim. Should be between 16 and 20. Master caution is on and you can read the CHECK TRIM message on the left MFD.
@@Zarma4074 Check trim warning only shows up after he aborts the first take off. Something fucks up and he doesn't notice it when taking off the second time.
Stop being a nitpick and enjoy the flying instead.
@@Zarma4074 check trim caution is displayed when trim is set below 12 nose up for an airfield takeoff, and below 16 for a carrier takeoff. (Launch bar down)
If you want more nose up/down authority flick the spin mode switch and pull the fcs override paddle
Yeah but I'm assuming the Finnish F-18 pilot did not use it. Maybe I'm wrong.
this should not be necessary, under no circumstances other than emergency should you pull the override paddle. the actual latest Hornet FCS has way more nose authority than this.
Wow 👏 nice flying. I wonder if they fly by the same guidelines as the airforce. All monovers performed at us air shows must be recoverable with one engine running. So it limits the pilots badassness....
Huh, interesting! I was not aware of this! Wonder what they do for the F-16 then... lol
Please see the DCS GoPro cockpit cam version of this video here: czcams.com/video/zxiRkbYBxEo/video.html
Woah that was impressive, this must have been challenging especially since I don't think we have the "no aoa limit" FCS in DCS. Huge respect.
If you're looking for other displays to reproduce in DCS, maybe it has been suggested already but I think this Mirage 2000C one could be interesting, you can find its hud footage with speed and alt displayed most of the time here czcams.com/video/dX677aC9EnA/video.html
Oh that's brilliant that you've linked that HUD video! I've been trying to find something like this for the Mirage demo! Thanks a lot for that! I will start reviewing/ working on it soon. And thanks for the kind words too! :)
The fun finally starts at 5:30.
From which airbase did you take off?
It's Rawad something or other - most northern base in Lebanon on the coast :)
wait do the Finnish legacy Hornets really have a Super Hornet pit?
The UFC anyway
By the way, how did you know it is about 150kt at 7:13?
You can see it in his HUD in the video ;)
@@CommandT oh yes I could barely see the number at 0.25 speed lol
@@carrierlandinghdlegacyhorn2686 Yeah if you look at the original video (link in description) and watch full screen you will see it just as he makes a full roll.
Can you do this same but from the 2020 display please?
Might consider after a few other videos :) Cheers!
