    Very good summary of the important features and I agree with your tips. I do think you might have also mentioned eye-relief. I wear glasses and a good eye-relief (at least 17-18mm for me) can make a big difference in how good a view you get. Otherwise you don't get the full benefit of the field of view you mentioned. Even with current, high-quality binocs, you can get burned by a mediocre eye-relief if you wear glasses.

    i just got some pentax 8x40 jupiter bns £65 ... perfect comprooise of size/weight/magnification.... bright and fun to use... very pleased with them

    I disagree. As an eye glass wearer, eye relief is critical for me. Anything less than 18mm means I cannot get a clear view. My Pentax 10X43 offer 21mm which is fantastic.
