Generally E-5 and up get to live out in town, and E-4 can as well depending on barracks occupancy rate and seniority. I never lived in a barracks in CONUS after I hit E-5. My last tour in Japan I had a barracks room like is shown here all to myself, but I _could_ have lived out in town if I wanted to. It wasn't financially worth it because unlike stateside, where your housing allowance might (or might not) be more than your housing cost, overseas housing allowance is tied to your rent, so you get enough to cover rent, and that is it.

That is an impressive room for a BEQ. The last time I had to stay (TAD orders) in a BEQ, we slept 4 to a room with a common bathroom, and that was in 1982-1983. I retired as an HM1 in 1992.

Damn, nice room. Marine here from 85-95. Way larger and nicer than what we had. E4's and below were usually 3 to a single room which wasn't too much bigger than the bedrooms here. No kitchen and common laundry for everyone in the barracks. Tile hallways for fun buffing and waxing adventures on field day.

We were stacked up like firewood. The command was giving BAQ and VHA to E2s to go live out in town. I don't want to sound like one of those "kids today don't know how good they got it" old farts but a lot of the on base housing hadn't been built yet. The NEX and housing complex around Radford Drive was primitive compared to now, I think most of it dated to WW2 or the early 50s. We we're barracked in the old base hospital where the sub piers galley is now or in the tower. Lockwood Hall and the small hi-rise was BOQ. You just got used to living like a sardine and hoped you didn't get stuck with some weirdo who didn't believe in deodorant or a chronic masturbator in your room (both happened to buddies of mine). You made room dividers from blankets and jumped in your car and went off base every chance you got. I'm probably making it sound worse than it was, we were just better at getting along with groups of people back then. More of us grew up in big families with smaller houses and were used to sharing a living space. This was almost 30 years ago. I'd hate to have to live that way now, but it's amazing what you can get used to, especially if you've been on a ship.

    Hi 👋 Dave
I am a little confused 🤷‍♀️. I don’t know where to start looking for the right answer without getting in trouble.... Ehhh not looking for that. Maybe some advice would help. Could you get in trouble if you rent a car or U haul to come back from first duty station to move family over or the military will help do all that? About how long after going to new duty station could I have family move over to on or off base housing? So far orders are 3 days on 4 days off (unless it changes) could I use those off days to come back to do moving or they will give me time for that? Thank you very much for any advice in advance 🙏

Aim33 wonghuan9 you can move your family with you as soon as you get to your first station. I’m not sure if the military move your family or he first time from your home of record but I know for sure every move after that they will pay for your move everywhere. And no you will not get in trouble if you rent a Uhaul and move them yourself.

you guys deserve better than this. see the reality of our military is this... WE the people who serve are serving the corperations, big companies who use the free-market that we protect and assist with. where is our royalties? where is equal access to new higher quality products? ever wonder these things? do you not think it is such a noble thing to do is volunteer to serve and you get low quality basic standard living and eating? do not deserve better? did you volunteer to go to prison? because that's how you are bing treated!
