Is The Lexus RC F Really A Japanese M3? (JDM Legends Tour Pt. 26)

  • Following on from my review of the amazing Lexus LC500, I drive their more practical coupe offering - the RC F. Powered by a naturally aspirated 5L V8, the Lexus has some old school credentials - but does this translate to a great driving experience or just an outdated M3 clone?

Engine parts and transmission are improved over ISF. The small labor intensive issues that people have with ISF are not present in RCF. Shifts are much more aggressive in RCF. It still looks fresh on the outside design wise and comfort and interior is much better. It still turns heads. Ibhabe no issue with driving it in - 20C. Traction control is much better on the TVD model which I have. Sound system is better. No regrets switching to RCF. Bullet proof vehicle. Bought mine used in 2019. No repairs. Cheap DIY maintenance.

      -TheManInDboX - But you buy a car to be reliable, because you invested money into and you're trying to get the most out of it? The M4 is the better sports car, the RCF is the better all around daily car.
      Fixes to the RCF would be: Coils/Spring(spring leaves factory ride quality)
      RR Racing USRS(LCA bushing) - Makes the steering response way better and up to par with the M4 imo. The OEM rear bushing is soft so it doesnt give accurate feedback.
      Exhaust - People have dropped the heavy as fuck oem exhaust and dyno'd 50+ crank gains.
      The RCF will never be the better track car than the M4 end of story. But the NA V8 is a beautiful thing to hear when driving, the RCF attracts A LOT of attention, the non car people think its some 100k+ Lexus. If you want a sporty car and you plan on tracking go for the M4. If you're not trynna live like your in your teens and just took your pops car out for a spin take the RCF. Sometimes we don't need those tickets.

    In isolation, this is a great car for doing long trips, driving at 7~8/10ths. I like that its a 'left-field' choice. The haters of the new Supra blame Toyota for not using the LC500 platform or using the drivetrain from this RCF but if they wanted to get 'cayman-levels' of agility through the corners, these existing Lexuses would've made the Supra weigh at least 300kg more than the Cayman. Also, the chief engineer Tada Tetsuya san and CEO Akio Toyoda san said that the straight 6 is what makes the Supra, a 'Supra'. I'm glad that this RCF exists and sticks to its old-school credentials.

    • @rellykz2175
      @rellykz2175 Před 5 lety +4

      Joji Jim On point with it, the new Supra will definitely be pushing 700-800whp with tunes, bolt ons, headers in the future. I own an RCF and it's true to its word, it's a daily luxury coupe, and an exhaust or muff+res del brings out the beautiful na v8 and shaves off a good amount of weight. Most of the people who own m4's dont track or race, they're for show and doing pulls on the highway, the demo for f80/82(rcf's biggest competition) owners is mostly lease and people over 30 as well. People say the RCF is too heavy, but the C63 is the same weight but because its a benz it's loved.

    Seems like it was made for the American market. Leaning towards one of these as opposed to a 997. And living in San Antonio, Texas Hill Country beckons for a grand tourer as opposed to a more pure sports car like a Porsche. And also for long hauls exploring the Western States the RC F seems perfect for the job. Also amazed by the Eco mpg. If that is true, I can commute in the RC F efficiently and bathed in luxury. But over all it strikes e as a Japanese version of a GT type muscle car like the old Pontic Trans Am. And considering that there is a Lexus LS 400 V8 out there with 1 million on the odo, the RC F, with both direct and port injection, should last a long time.

Naturally aspirated V8 engines tend to be more efficient than turbo V6 engines at highway cruising, regardless of what the claims may be. That being said, my preference has always been large, NA V6 engines like the VQ37VHR in the 370Z. It's the best of both worlds!

That was an incorrect statement. It is A LOT lighter. Tested weight actually is 350 lbs lighter and handles better and accelerates faster so while it is not as luxurious as the LC500, it has proven to be sportier than the LC500 all around.

      @meaturama It is a great car. I have owned one for 2 years with carbon fiber/TVD package. Does everything exceptionally well. It becomes different cars based on what you configure it to do. It can be a very normal touring car or you put everything in the most aggressive settings (manual, sport+ and TVD in track or slalom mode) and it becomes a fire breathing beast especially at high rpms. Also, I have had mine for 2 years and ZERO issues. I put a full aftermarket exhaust since the stock exhaust is kind of quiet and it sings. It does everything very well so the ownership experience for me, has been amazing.

      Because he drove it on a track and with the Lexus LFA being the best car he's ever driven, he probably expected the RC F to be quite a weapon. But with it being so heavy, it was never going to be one. So you can understand where the negativities of his review came from.

    • @motogte
      @motogte Před 5 lety +4

      @@MultiTopgearfan it's a GT Tourer it was a huge misconception that this was a track focused car, Chris Harris did the most accurate review of it has he did road and track and came to conclusion that its an incredible road car, they ironed out a few things with the lc500 which made it better all round but lexus need praise for trying something different with RCF at the time. Track edition is on its way soon we will see then if its capable.

  • @camryt
    @camryt Před 5 lety +4

    Having driven both the RCF and the GSF for quite a bit, I think GSF is a much better car. RCF is kinda twitchy and inpredictable at times, but the longer wheelbase of the GSF and different rear suspension geometry really help with traction. The TVD (torque vectoring diff, a true one with clutches, not like a fake system that uses brakes) works really well for finding traction and turning the car into the apex nicer, but it doesn't really like big skids. Plus, the GSF's cabin is much nicer with muuuuch more room with almost no weight penatly - the difference between the cars is like 40-50kg.

    • @rellykz2175
      @rellykz2175 Před 5 lety +1

      The GSF is HEAVILY underrated, it's more practical, it's indeed the better brother. But I prefer the look of the RCF over the GSF because the GSF is more lowkey(a sleeper) the RCF is more of a flashy car and of course a coupe. Not everyone's trynna take their GSF/RCF around sharp corners so it really comes down to preference tbh. The GSF is more practical, the RCF is if you really want a coupe and don't need the back seats. I'm not a fan of the GSF's rear because it has a flat non aggressive look to it, but the interior is handa down a step ahead of the RCF which is a shame because Lexus should've done it right, my brother's RX350 fsport package has a way better interior than my RCF and I spent way more money(mostly the infotainment system needs to be up to date on the RCF to make it modern).

Also, the interior quality might look a bit similar but some of the materials are changed and the doors feel much heavier (which shows it's built with quality). Lexus products have to be understood, once you do, chances are you'll never buy another brand. Toyota maybe if you're in a rough period. MB too exclusive (in their opinion, in my opinion ordinary..) BMW too arrogant and can't find their design language, AUDI just an expensive VW (dumb people, after #dieselgate I would never buy a VW product), What's funny though is that these are the most fierce critics yet get lots of inspiration from Lexus... triple head beam, huge air intakes, angular design, large front grill...etc. Toyota/Lexus really is the benchmark.
