Its a truly award winning film with a heavy and sensitive subject of female foeticide. These kinds of acts still prevalent in certain parts of the state of Tamil Nadu. If a developed state like TN can witness these incidents, imagine the state of other parts of the country - Govt has stringent laws to prevent it, but not entirely. Character revolves around arrogant male who kills (suicide frame that you saw briefly) his wife and subsequently came after her younger sister for re-marriage. The father character, paralysed, who is addicted to male child, uses crude methods to kill female borns. one other girl escaped his wrath and became a doctor (girl at magenta dress) and helps her father towards end of his life...beautiful film. must watch.

I have never heard this song before, but believe this is the same composition Rahman used in his 1997 collaboration with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Gurus of Peace, featured in his Vande Matram album. That song is so optimistic and full of hope, and its the exact same composition with different lyrics sung by the two legends !

I believe that Rahman also recognised Swarnalatha as one of the best singer he ever worked with.
A.R Rahman is beyond a magician. Music doesn't have a language & it is a feeling that touches your heart and soul. Since growing up in 90s i have been a constant fan boy of Rahman & i never listened to his South Indian music before but now i am just blown away what wonders and marvels he has done in Tamil/Telugu music. He should have won Oscars, Grammy's alone for his work in South Indian music. No one in music industry can ever achieve and even go near what Rahman has done with this magical scores.
