    Congratulations on all your success! Please remember that when we are obese, our bones thicken to carry that extra weight, our organs enlarge and we create excess skin. You can't get down to the weight of someone your same height and age and still be healthy because you will carry extra weight in your bones, organs and skin forever. Remember to give yourself grace. Don't aim for a number, aim for health and where your body feels good and you have energy to do the things you want to do. There's no need to weigh more than once a week. Less is better. Once a month would be ideal now that your body has started to level out at it's new set point. Continued health to you!

    I'm 5'1 1/2". I had a gastric bypass in March of 2023. I will be 8 months post op on the 2nd of November. When you're talking about loose skin, I feel it. I have it too. Basically in all the same places you were talking about. I started out at my heaviest at 209. Now I'm 123. I feel so much better! The loose skin doesn't bother me so much. I just feel like if I ran fast enough and flapped my arms, I might take flight. Lol

    This was an emotional and vulnerable roller coaster. I cried, I laughed, I mourned, I grieved, I smiled, I felt so much hope and comfort. I specifically relate to the simple elation that comes from being able to tie your shoes comfortably. I have frequent breakdowns over the size of my abdomen and not being able to have my dog sit in my lap. I’m also short so I don’t have much thigh room. I’m a fellow nurse and your whole vibe is just so… healing. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this. I am pre op and this was single handedly the most helpful thing I have consumed to prepare. I’m listening, I hear you, and I’m so grateful.
    Also, my biggest fear is how I will handle being treated differently. Your defense is nothing to apologize for. Anti fat bias is real and damaging and even dangerous. I hope that your bristling forced some reflection from the people who complimented you. Being wrong doesn’t make someone a bad person. But a good person wants to be better. We should all stop commenting on people’s bodies. It’s not an accomplishment to be thin. It is an accomplishment to meet goals and beam with healthy radiance… which YOU DO.

    I have a gastric bypass on June 5th and at my heaviest I was 305 I have lost 40 lbs. however I am 5’9. But I too feel you with the body dismorphia because I have always been small. Then got sick and put on tons of weight and so I literally weigh myself everyday several times a day even after meals. And it’s mentally so much more than those who don’t suffer with it see to the eye. Congratulations on your journey and victories

I'm concerned about the mental health aspect of losing weight and dealing with the world. Hearing you talk about your struggles let me know we are all in the same boat. (your boat holds many more people than mine at this point) I'm a retired RN and 67 so I understand my experience will be different than a youngster like you. You really are adorable. It was so great to hear how you are enjoying life so much more now. How you let us see your excess skin, or badge of honor, was very beneficial to me. I'm concerned about that, not looks wise but mentally dealing with another body issue. Having you be so modest, but still willing to show us what to expect was appreciated. I can see what you mean about the issues with the excess skin, but balanced with how much more you are enjoying life will hopefully balance out. Nicole, you are an inspiration. It’s been almost 3 months since my weight loss surgery. My biggest fear is not losing the weight. I eat about 1000 calories a day and this is a worry. It seems too much. But I get hungry. I do exercise by walking for 30 minutes twice a day and I take exercise classes 3 times a week. I understand why you memorize calories and protein content of everything. They want us to stick within such strict guidelines and we do want to be successful, so naturally, we track food closely. You’re doing great and I hope I can too. I’m down 35 lbs from 214lbs at 5’1”.

    Congratulations on your journey Nicole. So proud of you. I have enjoyed watching your videos and seeing someone who is so "real" and "honest" about the journey. You're a beautiful lady. I am just starting my pre-op today and my surgery is in two weeks. Takes a while and a lot of steps to get there...doesn't it! I need to loose about 100 lbs and am having gastric sleeve. I cannot thank you enough for your videos. It truly helps me understand so much about what I will be going through. I personally believe that if one is informed and knows what to expect, it can ease the challenge a bit. Even when you showed the rough times, (like your first week for example), I could clearly see there was a light at the end of the tunnel. That was more than reassuring. I am not looking forward to the saggy skin, but understand it is part of it. The thing that scares me the most is loosing hair. Nice to see it comes back. My hair is so thin already... The other thing that scares me is not being able to potty. Scary! But I guess I will figure that out too. Again, congratulations and thank you.

    Hi Nicole! Thanks for continuing to share your weight loss journey with us. I’m four months out and I totally get that body dysmorphia! We had to take grade-level teachers’ photos for the yearbook on Friday, and it wasn’t until I compared a picture of me from a year ago and with that picture that I finally saw a difference. The numbers have changed in four months but when I look down at myself, I don’t see any difference. It’s bizarre! You’re doing fantastic! I hope to get to where you are in a year. Ngl, I hate focusing on numbers but I don’t think I’m hitting protein and water intake goals….and what the heck?!?! My hair is now falling out! I’m so afraid I’m going to go bald! I bought sugar bear hair vitamins, shampoo and conditioner for hair loss and minoxidil! Lol! When will it stop falling out? 😳😂
    You should be super proud of your hard work! You EARNED that new confidence, girl!! Can’t wait to see your world travels! Low key jealous over here(Northern California)! 😁

    Congratulation to the weight loss. I'm 5'6" when I started going to a bariatric center in October I was 363 lbs. Currently I'm at 315 just from using a food tracking app with guidelines set by a dietician until I can have the surgery. Initially my Doctor and I was trying for a duodenal switch surgery. However, that's the only bariatric surgery my Insurance doesn't cover. They have re-submitted for Rouen-Y Gastric bypass, should hear back with a surgery date within a week or so. Glad I found your video's to get an Idea of what to expect with Gastric Bypass.

Also if this helps you at all, I’ll share my stats right now. I’m only 3 inches taller than you and I’m 230, however because of my body composition and muscle I’m a size 14/16 L/XL. I say this to provide an example on why specific numbers aren’t as important. You’re dietician is right, try not to weigh yourself. You’re going to be uncomfortable and distressed at first but eventually you’ll get used to the discomfort. Good luck to you

    You are doing great! I feel everything you are saying. I am 1 1/2 years post op gastric bypass. I had to go to weighing once a month, if that, because the number on the scale was really playing with my mind and affects my mood (not in a good way). My scale, as you mentioned, also fluctuates about 5-7 pounds and has for months. The nutritionist assured me it is normal and our bodies are trying to find its sweet spot after a large amount of weight loss. I did get the metabolism test recently and that really helped me focus on how many calories my body uses and needs per day, depending on my activity. The printout tells you how many calories your body burns at rest, burns with normal daily activities, and burns with 30 mins of a moderate exercise. It tells you what calories to stick between for weight loss and what calories to stick between to maintain your weight. I do put my meals in my fitbit app on and off to check my calories to make sure I am in the "lose weight" range because I hope to get down about 8-10 pounds eventually but also know what calories to stay under to maintain. Since surgery, I have learned that my body needs food to lose weight, which is a hard concept for me because, as an obese person, I always felt that food was the enemy. I do not fear food anymore, which is huge for me. I highly recommend getting the metabolism test if your clinic offers it. They had me wait until I was 1 1/2 years post op to do it just because your body is usually near where you will maintain at at that point. Keep up the good work!!

      I will have to ask my clinic about that - I think my PCP mentioned that they do that in her office, too, so I will ask her when I see her next. Great idea - sounds like invaluable information!

    Try to eat savoury, salty food from whole vegetable & fruit. Here is one recipe. Start with browning yellow onions in some oil until yellow. Add garlic. Add water to cover cut carrots. Add broccoli. Add zucchinis, green leafy veg. or more veggies you like. Add more water. Add salt, spices* (cumin & pepper,...), ... freeze daily bags. Every day take 1 bag. Get a can of sardines or tuna or macherel. Cook 3 min. by squashing them. Eggs can be the protein substitute. Add to the veggies.
    *i like tarragon.

    I'm happy for you.I can also relate to you wanting to be that number. Please let me interject a thought: what if you get to that 100 lbs that chart tells you to be and you're still not satisfied?
    I'm not trying to be a smarty. I'm shorter like you and I had that same "goal" and I made it there more than once. I had the six pack and everything. But it wasn't sustainable.
    My journey was a weight loss story after I had sn accident but then bevame the opposite later on. I ended up having a weight gain journey and although it was a path I chose to take it wasn't amazing. I chose to go all in and make no foods were of limits. I gained a lot of weight really fast and then over the next year (60+) lbs and I was the biggest I have ever been in my life. It was hard. The weight did eventually come back off after some years and now 6 years later I can say it was worth it.
    I'm saying all this to say. That chart. That number. That doesn't define you. You define you. 💕

      When your body goes through a trauma like a big surgery and then the fast malnutrition, your body has to decide what areas to devote resources to, and our hair follicles aren’t deemed that important. So our telomeres release their hold on our follicles and the hairs fall out. It takes a bit for our bodies to calm down and accept the new normal. It took about 9 months for my hair to stop falling out. Not fair and not fun - but it’s growing back really well now!

      @nicoleislosingit  Před 6 měsíci +1

      About 6 weeks after I could eat whatever my body tolerated. But I couldn't tolerate bread for a few months after that and then it was about 6 months by the time rice didn't upset my stomach/feel too uncomfortable. I stayed away from sugar until about 3 months post-op, but was fine with it when I finally tried it again. I would say that by 6 months post-op I was eating "normal" again.

Also really loving their Pumpkin Spice one right now. GNC's new Girl Scout Cookie shakes are good. I really don't like the Strawberry Premier Protein shake or their Vanilla - they both have weird after tastes to me.

    As far as protein goes, we need to consume .3 grams per pound. So a 200-pound person should consume 60 grams a day of protein. Sounds like you may have an excess of protein intake?

    • @nicoleislosingit
      @nicoleislosingit  Před 9 dny

      Nope, not an excess. After gastric bypass, you don’t absorb nutrients/macros the same. We need more. That’s why I work very closely with very skilled and knowledgeable surgeons and registered dietitians for my nutritional needs.

    Seriously, Nicole, there is no reason not to wear shorts. That little teeny wrinkle on above your knee is nothing for a woman of 44 years. Ive only lost 60 pounds so far and my arms and legs are much worse, already, than yours. But I will be damned if thats gonna stop me from enjoying swimming or shorts during the summer in the Land of 10,000 Lakes! lol Speaking seriously, though, I truly hope that you are/will consider getting in person counseling. Going toward anorexia by being so numbers focused, rather than being healthy, mobile and flexible, coupled with body dysmorphia are real mental things, as you know, and you need to deal with them before they get out of hand. Both are also my fear as well.
