- Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his CZcams channel.

Wow, I'm so glad you talked about weight loss immediately following surgery. I lost 40 lbs in the 6 months before surgery and about 12 lbs on the pre-op diet. I was all ready to see a huge loss at my 1st post-op appointment and I lost all of 1.2 lbs. I cried at my 1st appt, literally cried. I felt like I had failed every attempt to lose weight and had even failed weight loss surgery. No one explained that aspect to me which did not help my emotional well-being, at all. Now, 2 years later, I've done very well and am at my goal weight and very pleased.

Wow. Good to hear of your experience I'm 60lbs down preop. Wondering what's going to happen post op. This is all terrific info.
What did you do?? I’m feeling like that now ( 5.2 months post vsg).
Dr Matthew definitely knows what he speaking of. I lost 30lbs during preop and week 3 after surgery I stalled for 5weeks straight. However, I lost alot of inches but my weight loss started back up and I'm losing it rapidly 😊. I will be 3months PO on the 17th.
Mrs Pablo I only lost 11 pounds pre-op, then 24 pounds in the first two weeks, stalled for a month with only 4 more pounds lost. Then boom... I lost 6 pounds this week. I started working out in the morning instead of evening. I’m getting in 60 grams of protein now (I was only around 45 ish before), I’m pooping more and my “Aunt Flow” was two weeks late but now that she’s here the weight is coming off again. There are so many possible reasons for these stalls but I figure as long as we keep doing what we know is right we will reach our goals.
@@fatdawny9830 I agree, we gotta keep moving fwd and doing what's right and before we know it we will be at our GW or close
Mrs Pablo thank you and I agreed with you. I am 3 weeks out po. Before my VSG I lost 35-40 pounds and now I feel like I am not loosing. What did you do to get out of the stalled? Thank you again.
@@teresawebb5374 I made sure I was getting 64oz of water in and at least 70g of protein, and I CZcams dance workout videos. I really think dancing in my home to the videos really helped because it was something different for my body. I usually go to the gym and do the same workout
Mrs Pablo thank you so much.
That was me Doctor, thank you for answeing my question!
Also, I've started losing again and yes, I lost 15lbs before surgery.
Glad it helped, a great question that most people struggle with at some point
How are you now did you figure out how to break it?

Im 2 months out and lost 20 pounds the first month very quickly then it stopped and I have been on a stall for 1 month now. Yes 1 entire month that the scale has not moved AT ALL. I have been drinking 64 oz water daily, eating nothing but protein, veggies, salads etc. I don’t snack and I don’t eat late at night. I have been walking 45 minutes daily and scale still doesn’t move and I’m losing my mind
Same here! I'm getting scared now!
How did it work out for you?
@@earthmelon8517 now I lose 1-2 lbs per week..slow but still progress. BMI is 28 right now.
se here 1 month stall I'm so nervous and depressed 😢
Did it ever work out for you?
This made me feel so much better thank you. I’m entering my 4th week and I’ve been at a stall for a week now. I’m hoping when I get on the scale tomorrow that I see at least a 1 pound difference!!!
Same here, I’m almost to week 5 but haven’t lost anything in about a week. I have lost 50lbs in my first 4 weeks tho so hopefully it’s just a little stall.
Am on a 2weeks stall only 1 lb am going on 3 months on 2/4/21.. How are you doing now..if possible a update would be nice ... Thanks.. Love light and weight loss

Dr Weiner I want to thank you so much for your approach to weightloss. There is a certain "world famous" bariatric surgeon here on youtube who merely preaches nutriotion as a cure all for weight, but that is not true. Thanks to your open minded approach I have realized that my rapid weight gain and struggle to lose weight might be because I actually have lipedema. I am seeing a specialist in Italy in 2 months. Thank you so much for your open minded approach to nutrition and weightloss.

I'm 4wks out of gastric bypass and stalled, so frustrating! I gained 1lb this week! I was worried that I'd already stretched my pouch out even though I haven't eaten much.
I lost over 100lbs in the year prior to surgery and 12lbs the first week. I started a weight management program March 2019 at 400lbs, I was 291lbs the day of surgery March 16th 2020. I'm 275 as of today :)
Where are you now?

I'm only 10 weeks post surgery and have been a stall for 4 weeks now, I'm so worried and stressed about it
So how did it work out? I lost good for 4 weeks and now its been 2 weeks without losing.
@@BigPappaRob It started again but very slow process, it's hard not to stress about it but it definitely isn't permeant, your body will start loosing weight again very soon, I'm around 8st down now and still have 3 months before it will be 1 year post surgery. Loosing around 0.4kg per week at the minute, try not to worry or weigh yourself constantly
@@ja3724 how you doing now with your weight?
@@Amged001 not to bad thanks! never gain but certainly levelled out, I have to fight for every lb off now, but the main thing is I never gain
Me too!!!! I’m exactly 8 weeks out and haven’t lost a pound in 4 weeks!!! How are you doing now?
Thank you so much for the answer, doc! I stalled briefly on week 3! Even though, I am at 13% less of my original weight!

I was justed sleeved exactly a month ago 12/1/21 and I been on a stall for almost two weeks and was wondering what the heck is going but after watching is video it really gave me an understanding of what could be happening with me and how I can help change it or wait for my body to catch up as I am one of the patients who had a lower bmi then most so I'll be patient and adjust some of my wrong doings and hope that it helps to keep me on track. thank you dr and stay safe.

Oh and I meant to ask, are you intending to put out another course for those who are farther out from surgery? I'm 2 years out but I know I'm not "out of the woods" for regain. You can find all sorts of information for the 1st year after surgery or losing weight but not that much is out there talking about how to maintain the weight.

Thank you for your video. I'm also stalled its been more than 2 weeks now. Its going to be 2 months on the 17th of April since I had the sleeve surgery. I am also 53 years old and my bmi was not that high before surgery. I lost a lot of weight after surgery 25lbs. I did eat orange. I walk more than a mile almost everyday. I also started more exercise like walking on the spot etc. I just frustrated. Need your advise.

I had gastric bypass 12/10/18. I started at 315 lbs (5'7". 42 year old male) and I am now about 179. My goal was 160, but I have been plateauing for about a month now. I think I am going to push for possible 170 and just try to maintain. I have pretty decent muscle mass and look good in cloths (finally, lol). I went strict Keto after month two and never really had any major plateaus until now. I also had no major complications (but I never missed a supplement and have been doing very clean/healthy keto). Never thought I would be able to say I stayed on my "diet"/keto without breaking it once for seven months straight. It has been a fun adventure and I credit the surgery for giving me a tool that made a huge difference (I was always struggling with staying on my diet and would never be able to make it long term, no matter what lifestyle I chose). This calculator showed how well I have done and should not stress as much/I am ahead of the game. :)

Dr. Matthew Weimer.. I'm going through a stall big time. My surgery was on 8/28. I be only lot 10 lbs since no my pot op date. In fact I've gained one pound back. I'm not losing the weight as I expected. Am I doing something wrong? Please help me ease my mind with this. Thanks ' that gurl'

Hi, if due to Genetics, is it useless to do to surgery? I'm not able to loose weight with diet and exercise, especially after 40 years old. I gained 100 and very small amount of time with out changing my diet. I did all kind of test nothing shows on my tests.
i’m 3 months post surgery now and the scale hasn’t moved since the one month mark 😢 i lost 20 pounds on the pre op liquid diet and 29 pounds on the first month post op and then it stopped 😢
When you talk about older people not losing as well, what age is older? Thanks for a great topic and for that outcomes calculator.

Hello Dr. Weiner. I am concerned because I had weightloss surgery in Mexico on Jan 8th. I lost 26 pounds the first month and now I'm just about 3 months post opp and havent lost anymore weight. So basically I'm at a 2 month stall and havent lost a pound since 🥺
I had surgery January 12th and only lost 20 pounds. I've been on a stall for 3 to 4 weeks. I'm so worried.
I'm 5' 11" and 45yrs old. I stopped losing weight after only 3 weeks. No weight-loss during weeks 4 & 5. Gained 2lbs week 6, gained 2lbs week 7, no weight loss or gains in week 8, currently in week 9 no loss or gain so far. Extremely angry and frustrated. I stay away from sugar and I am not on any medications. 330lbs to 317lbs in 9 weeks.
Thank you for your comment. I've been waiting to read about a person that has a long stall like that because it's exactly what I'm going through. I'm in week 9 and only lost 20 pounds since surgery. I'm so worried.
@@jessicavasquez9708 how long did your stall last?
@@marisolbonds686 it lasted about 3 weeks. I was loosing inches but no weight.
@@jessicavasquez9708 I'm 20 days post op and stopped losing day 6. I'm going to stop looking at the scale seeing that this is normal. Thank you for responding!
@@marisolbonds686 yes dont look at the scale and my primary doctor told me first some people loose water weight which is inches before dropping weight
I only lost 5 lbs and today is the 5th day of post OT, I didn’t do any pre-ot diet
I am 25. I have been on a strict diet postop. I am only 5 weeks post mini bypass yet I am barely losing weight. I would say the total of my 1st month weight loss is 4-5 kg which is so below average.. I am so upset. I even workout. My surgeon says it is because I had gastric band before which is the reason my weight loss with 2nd surgery so slow. I am really depressed and cant find a reason.
Hey Dina, I had the gastric sleeve on the 5th of October. So far I've lost 7.5kgs and I lost 5kg in the two weeks pre op liquid diet. I walk too but I'm not consistent with it daily cause honestly I'm exhausted. My surgeon said I'm losing it slowly too post op. I guess we have to give our bodies some time to heal from the surgery and try to have green tea in the morning to get our metabolism improve. And if you're having those protein shakes that has sugar, look for other options without sugar. Good luck to us I guess. 💪🏼
M stalled just after 20 days post surgery, very unhappy.
Dr Weiner a 2010 pt. Not weight gain...I now follow a Keto diet, but I am convinced WLS has contributed to my problem with alcoholism. I am stable with weight but out of control with wine drinking. I am 60 yrs old never had a drinking problem now as a post op of 10 yrs i constantly struggle with alcohol addiction. I am certain the WLS has everything to do with my desire for alcohol!! Did you doctor inadvertently go along with another agenda? I am certain there is a genetic component to this! Please address this
It's called *Addiction transfer* - Usually after WLS alcohol gets digested faster. So you get drunk quickly even with small amount of alcohol. So the food addiction kinda gets transferred onto Alcohol now.
That's the reason why alcohol is restricted post WLS and one should watch out for the signs of addictions!
I did lose weight prior to surgery like 20 lbs after 5 months lost 60 lbs. now stalled!!!
I'm at my 7 months from sleeve and I'm at a stall weight at start of my journey I was at 265 and surgery day I weight 253 and right now at 7 months out 216 been stall for 3.5 months I was never really told what I can eat and/or what to eat I try to eat healthy and small meals and homemade protein shakes dr what am I doing wrong I'm able to eat anything that what scares me I try to eat healthy no soda no sweety why can't I lose weight I just don't want to eat need more and I don't know what to eat
My practice's nutrition program is open to the public: www.poundofcureweightloss.com/postoperative-support-program/
Define “doing very well at 2 months” please? Do you judge by percentage of excess weight lost or some other criterion? How is someone 5’8” and 229 going to lose a pound a day for 2 months?? That would be s huge percentage of what I am to lose in total
I've gained this week im 6 weeks out even though I can barely eat anything yes I've been drinking some orange juice but I've been struggling with my bowels too but I lost alot of weight b4 surgery as all surgery's were put on hold last year due to covid in march between then and Dec I lost 4 stone xxx
Hi Steph
Thanks for sharing your experience. can u tell me what you did while u experienced weight gain so early in ur surgery? I lost 30 lbs in a month but now i am gaining some weight back (2 lbs) which is driving me crazy
@@datrimray1920 I think it was the things I was snacking on or maybe the time I was eating I have been struggling to get my meals in during the day so snacking at night so I've switched my snacks to fruit and nuts which means I've now upped my protein I've started to loose again now and drinks can make a difference as well so I mostly drink water xx
@@stephbrowning1690 so some amount of weight gain is possible and nothing to worry about right? I never ever thought this would happen to me. I am just about doing everything right but this happened right after i started my soft diet. On clear liquid i was losing weight like lightening

Wow this was so helpful for me. I am going on my 9th week post op and I’ve been stalled since about week 6/7. My first month post op I lost 35 pounds. Prior to that I lost about 30-35 during the month and a half before my surgery! I think my body is trying to catch up but it’s so frustrating not seeing the scale move. I will say that I also think the stall had to do with my struggle with protein, which I have thankfully getting way better on, and not being as active as I could be. Which has also changed. I’m expecting to break my stall soon enough but it’s so nice to see that it’s not fully my own doing, etc. I’m going to continue to push myself and do what I need to do and I’m sure the scale will reflect that. 💖
