    Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His practice is located in Tucson Arizona.
    Dr. Weiner graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He completed his general surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City. He practiced in suburban Detroit for 12 years before moving to Tucson in 2019 where he, together with Dr. Guillermo Higa, founded Tucson Weight Loss Surgery.
    In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Weiner is the Director of Bariatric Surgery and the Medical Director of Telemedicine at Tucson Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS) and is a past President of the Michigan State chapter a Bariatric Surgeons.
    Dr. Weiner has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgeries since joining his first practice in 2006 and frequently does complicated revision surgery. He also performs general surgery with an interest in stomach and small intestine surgery along with complex hernia repair.
    In his first book, A Pound of Cure, Dr. Weiner debunks the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and offers a non-surgical solution to those suffering from obesity through nutritional stability.
    His second book, How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works: And How to Make it Work for You, is now available on Amazon in paperback and kindle. In this book, Dr. Weiner describes how the hormonal changes that alter your brain, fat stores and hunger signals are the most important component of weight loss surgery, rather than the portion control effects that have been emphasized in the past.
    A third publication called The Bariatric Diet Guide And Cookbook is a cookbook for bariatric patients that will offer recipes and guidance on the most effective post-surgical diet. It’s set to be published in May 2021 and is available for pre-order at most online bookstores.
    On his website, www.poundofcureweightloss.com, he offers more than 150 videos on a wide array of nutritional and bariatric topics. Lesson plans range from, “Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery” to “The Metabolic Reset Diet” including recipes and meal plans.
    Dr. Weiner is licensed to practice in both Arizona and Michigan and even offers Telemedicine appointments. For more information call his office at (520) 420-1000 or check out his many resources below. For more videos and Facebook Live events, subscribe to his CZcams channel.

    I had diabetes for 2months now. I’m 93kg and I want to lose 53kg within a year. I’m having the gastric bypass done 10 days wish me luck.
    *update* I am 1 wk post op now and I’m still recovering in the hotel, my incisions are looking good n healing well. I’m 85kg so since surgery I was 93kg, I’ve lost 8kg in a week🥳 pre op diet wasn’t required but surgeon told me to fast 12hrs prior to surgery. I can’t wait to see the results in 1month, so excited I don’t feel hungry anymore, I can live on one protein shake a day (sipping away) and little water. Can’t do more as I’m still swollen, bloated inside and recovering. Soups gives me diarrhoea for some reason.

I weight 270 and only standing at 5’5. My primary told me my BMI is around 44.9. I would love to be off of these pain meds and finally have a good night rest without this sleep apnea problem. I’m happy to see tons of people in the comments were able to get it done and taking control of their life

    So glad to see you here-- your POV is fresh and right up my alley! I am loving following the Pound of Cure Program now as I am 4.5 years out RNY- I lost 100% of excess weight- and had minimal rebound- at year 3-4.5-- now after one week- I am so excited to see it is possible for me to lose this extra rebound! I eat mostly lean and green, and legumes-- but had added wine- too often and relaxed a bit. A Pound of Cure is JUST what I have been looking for!

    Your videos make me more confident, my doctor I've had since birth suggested I consider surgery. I'm going through insurance and they require 6 months with a nutritionist before I meet a surgeon so I decided to research now. I'm 20 and 292lbs at 5'6 and have been for years no matter diet or exercise I might take off 10lbs but that's about it, I'm a hairdresser so I'm on my feet all day. My mother had bariatric surgery in about 2005 and is still around 135lbs.

    Thank you so much for your videos. I had RNY in 2006 and had a goal weight set by my surgeon of 130. I was compliant and at the end of one year only reached 190. I was made to feel like a failure by my surgeon and left the program. I recently found a new surgeon who is helping me to lose the weight I gained and get back on track. He says my goal weight should have only been around 190 to begin with. He explained the reasoning to me exactly as you did in this video. I guess so much more is known now than 12 years ago. I WAS happy with myself and felt I could have maintained 190 if not constantly being told that I was a failure for not reaching my goal weight. Thank you again!!!

Im 157 cm and i have bmi on 48 so im so happy for this videos thank you so much! and im on my limit to diabetes 2 and high cholesterol. Thank you for the answer. I think it might be the best thing to choose because i have a lot of weight to lose and then i really want to get pregnant in the future and as i heard in one of your videos for womens that have infertility problems should do the bastric bypass. So i think thats a good chose. But i have been worried about Intestinal Volvulus, how common is it? the once I know that have had the gastric bypass didnt have any big complications, but I have heard from one women that she had it and it was really painful. So thats what im most worried about - small complications is not a big of matter but this kind really scears me.

    I start my 6 months program July 29; so that means I will have surgery next year sometime! I have had 3 children; 14, 9, and 2 but recently as of Dec/2015 I have gained about 60lbs, so now I am up to 308; heaviest I have ever been. I was able to walk last year with no problems but now my body, back, knees hurt all the time and lately my feet have been very swollen. I am ashamed that I have allowed myself to get this big. I use to carry my weight very well; as in you couldn't tell what I weighed and if I told someone they would not believe me. Now you can see it. I am going to get gastric bypass, I am very scared and excited at the same time. I know this is right for me; because of all the health problems, I have been having-GERD, pre diabetic, Asthma, Depression, sore body and the worst one Sleep Apnea. I am only 34 and I have all these preventable conditions. It's a long journey A life long journey but I am ready for it! Thank you for your videos by the way, I have been watching them for the last year.

    I am feeling absolutely GREAT after my gastric bypass surgery 4 months ago! I am losing about 2 pounds a week and I am VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT!!! I have plenty of energy and can move faster than before. I don’t want to lose weight too fast neither too much because: NUMBER ONE , I want to FEEL GOOD not sick, tired, or fatigued; NUMBER TWO, I am vain and looks are important to me and I DONT WANT TO GET WRINKLES to the point of having to go to a plastic surgeon! Makes no sense whatsoever....your skin will suffer tremendously IF a person regardless of what sex they are lose weight WAY TOO FAST and this is a fact. A dermatologist or plastic surgeon can tell you that; NUMBER THREE, I do not care AT ALL about a dress size! A SIZE in clothes is unimportant to me and it is meaningless. What I MOSTLY care is FEELING GREAT AND LOOKING GOOD and not creating health problems by being a “skinny mini!” HELL NO! Being there done that. Enough of that. HEALTH is the most important thing in life, more than money, a house or anything else!!!! WITHOUT HEALTH YOU HAVE NOTHING AT ALL, period. And when I chose to have the gastric bypass was MAINLY BECAUSE OF HEALTH REASONS!!! I want to FEEL HEALTHY and LOOK HEALTHY that is my priority. What’s the use to be on a size 4 or 5 when you don’t feel good and look “sickly” and have all kind of “health issues” which they come by been under weight??? That mentality is for the birds and it is very ignorant! MY OPINION! One should lose the weight ACCORDING TO AGE, HEIGHT AND WHATEVER HEALTH ISSUES YOU MIGHT HAVE! If a person has diabetes that person needs to be on medication for the rest of his/her life unless they do the gastric bypass surgery (if they are obese) which is great for people with high blood sugar and even so they might have to continue their medications; or if a person has heart problems, or depression, etc. they are not going to stop any medicines even if their medicines makes them gain weight ! For what reason?? just TO LOSE WEIGHT TO BE SKINNY??? Come on....that is insane and very dangerous.
    In my case, Thanks to the Good Lord, I am a healthy person who doesn’t have any mayor illnesses at all, NONE! My parents had great genes and were VERY HEALTHY ALL THEIR LIVES UNTIL THEY PASSED ON TO AN EVEN GREATER LIFE.
    Having said that, I am very happy that I am losing my weight SLOWLY and NOT fast. Two pounds a week is FINE WITH ME. I keep my skin healthy and youthful for the “looks”
    and I love it. I get compliments as to how “young” I look for my age, and that makes me feel terrific. I guess I am doing something right.
    This has been my opinion and what I do in real life!
    Happy trails.....

    I weighed 374 lbs in January 2019, and got down to 321.5 by the day of surgery on May 23. Today is July 23, and my weight this morning was 278.5. That’s 43 lbs lost in the 2 months since surgery, and 96.5 lbs in 6 months. By far the most success I’ve had with weight loss.

    I'm doing lots of research prior to hopefully getting a sleeve gastrectomy. My concern is from past HORRIBLE iron deficiency anemia and a full workup with a hematologist, I only seem to be able to utilize heme iron. I was a vegetarian when this was discovered. No amount of veggies or iron supplements helped. With a Hgb of 8 and 7 months pregnant, I had to start eating meat because the other option was a blood transfusion. I'm worried about this after surgery. How do you handle this problem?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  Před 5 lety

      Need lots more info to address this question, iron deficiency can be from blood loss or poor absorption, need a thorough work up from a hematologist. I’d be careful about choosing a gastric bypass since this could make things even worse. Sleeve patients are also susceptible to iron deficiency but less so

    Dr, I have a very important question to ask you and a little bit more of what your opinion or thoughts are in my situation. I'm a 29 year old female with Spina Bifida, but only partially paralysis (L2-L3, can move everything except ankles and down)and in a wheelchair. I am 5'1, 220 lbs, the reason why I use the wheelchair frequently now is because I am to heavy to be able to walk with my braces and crutches and get tired easily. I had my first child at 21, and after that I just ballooned! I gave birth to my second child at 25. I currently have changed the way I view food all together, and I have made it a habit of choosing what's right and healthy for my diet, and do regular leg exercise and such, but I'm just too overweight and My primary Doctor, my Neurosurgeon both discussed with me the importance of weight loss. It wasn't until a month ago that my Neurosurgeon suggested I look into weight loss surgery because he said it would benefit me alot since it's so much more difficult for me to lose weight on my own vs a normal walking person. I also like to mention I have hypertension, high cholesterol, depression, and lots of frequent urinary infections due to wearing an intro foley catheter. And the only way I could prevent using a intro foley catheter is if I self cath like I used to, but the problem with that is that it's extremely difficult to do because I am so heavy and can no longer do it like I used to with ease when I wasn't overweight. So my question is, is if weight loss surgery in your opinion could benefit me and if you'd recommend surgery like that for someone with my health issues and disability? Do you find me a candidate for a surgery like this, after everything else is failing?

    • @apoundofcure
      @apoundofcure  Před 9 lety +1

      Candy macchio Yes, this is worth pursuing and probably your only option. Good nutritional compliance after surgery will be critical for long term success given your age and limited mobility. Strongly consider the gastric bypass.

    I'm 5'11 and I lost majority of my weight (85 pounds ) before surgery. after surgery I really only wanted to lose about 60 pounds or so and that's it. I had my surgery four and a half months ago and I'm only ten pounds from my goal weight that I set. according to your calculation, I would lose entirely too much weight, I'm not trying to lose 100 or more pounds after surgery, so how can I stop weight loss without stretching my stomach. again, I'm still in the beginning stages of my surgery but I'm pretty much at goal.

    I was wondering what is your opinion on a revision surgery to a stretched sleeve after 6 years out. The sleeve was orginally done well and about 75 cc but then it got stretched and now i am stuck as i had never reached a weight where my BMI was normal i am still morbidly obese.
    I am considering a mini gastric bypass but i am really afraid of doing it and i am worried if i do a resleeve i may never reach a normal BMI due to the fact my metabolisim is very slow and i may remain fat and with a stretched sleeve again.
    My surgery is due next week and i am thinking to call it all off.

    Wt regain has to be directly related to diet compliance. I don’t understand the genetics argument. All the patients who have the surgery are obese so it’s obvious they don’t have great genetics. It all comes down to changing relationships with food and making it healthy and finding self love. Thanks for the video doc.

I wanted to start green smoothies with plain protein powder and got scolded by the Nutritionist that they are too high carb. My question is do you think being on bio-identical hormone cream - estrogen and progesterone- would slow weight loss? Also do you think past yo-yo dieting slows weight loss?
