    • @nixx8531
      @nixx8531 Před 3 lety +3

      Sorry if you've found this out already but I'll share just in case someone else has the same questions. The version of Lightburn you need depends on the type of laser you have, more specifically the controller. I'm pretty sure most if not all diode based laser machines use a GCode based controller. Many newer CO2 based lasers use a DSP based controller, some chinese K40 models and most of the 50W "China Blue" and up models. Check the machine specs to be sure though, if it has a Ruida controller you'll need a DSP license. Also there is no specific hardware needed for Lightburn, just a usb cable. The pictures in their shop are examples of the controllers I believe. You can connect a USB camera up to monitor jobs and help with aligning the work piece. They sell a few models on their site but you can use one off of Amazon as well. If you're thinking of getting into lasers or haven't tried/heard of Lightburn yet I highly recommend it. They add new features pretty regularly and the price is really cheap for the ease of use and features you get in my opinion. You can download a fully functional 30 day trial to test it out with your machine as well. Sorry for the long winded reply but hope it helps someone, all the best.

    I do have a question for you - Do you know if this would work to make cuts on styrene or thin acrylic sheets? I want to get into making dioramas so something like this would be a huge time saver if it can cut enough to make styrene break in clean snaps.

    • @3DPrintFarm
      @3DPrintFarm  Před 3 lety +2

      Good question! The diode lasers are great for engraving and thin materials. If as in styrene, you mean foam boards, it cuts really well.. You just need to monitor for flareups. These type of lasers also cut EPA foam like butter

      AIR ASSIST.. will reduce “Blacks” (but on some Co2 Lasers you will need air assist to keep lens clean)
      For Co2...starting point 30-50mm/sec @ 20-50% power
      Do a test tile of 30 x 30 mm scans
      Some CO2 ,s need air to keep lens clean
      DO NOT USE GREYSCALE
      1...Prepare Photo with a photo Editor....(LightBurn now has photo prep under shape properties)
      2....set size of photo to size you will laser on tile
      3....set DPI to around 318 (this really depends on the size of your Laser Beam)
      4....clean white tile with Lacquer thinner
      5....paint tile / Glass Flat White..allow to dry (one light coating should do)
      6....fine focus Laser beam
      7....pick Image Mode to use ( I prefer Jarvis Dither and have had some success with Stucki Dither.....Available with LightBurn software....this preference takes some trial runs and documentation ....if preDithered use LightBurn “Passthrough”
      8...for my 2.5 watt diode..speed 1200 mm/min...power 85% (my S-value in LightBurn =255) Line Interval = 0.085
      9 takes approximately 50-70 minutes to complete
      10....clean off all paint with Lacquer Thinner...
      11...place felt pads on bottom to prevent scratching
      Video
      How to Focus Diode
      Prepping Photos to Laser
      Basic Steps
      Dithering is done when converting to 1-bit black and white from either greyscale (8 bit black and white) or color. Dithering is one of the last steps. Here's a typical flow
      1) usually resize for your DPI and finished engraving dimensions. DPI is based on your beam size and burn radius (upgraded optics usually as small as 0.08mm, stock optics more like 0.10mm) anything more you will be overlapping lines and quality will actually get worse
      2) convert from color to greyscale
      3) Unsharp mask (to give it pop)
      4) Adjust tonal curve (because mid-tones do not process well in engravings
      5) Brightness/Contrast
      6) Convert to 1 bit (dither)
      7) Process in Lightburn as passthrough
      These are the basic steps, and each photo is different, you need to develop the laser "eye" and know what looks good when finished. It takes time and practice. Some photos just won't engrave well, due to limited quality.

      Yes, the assholes who "own" the copyrights to these things (govt granted Monopoly) will undoubtedly come after him. What's troubling is the number of people who never think copyright law through. Forget for a moment that these assholes, like Disney, used their muscle to extend copyrights, in essence, indefinitely. Copyrights are limits on what YOU can do with your ACTUAL property in favor of another party. Perhaps a lot of morons have no idea that copyright laws were never originally intended to last virtually forever. It used to be for a LIMITED time. It was that way because our founders understood that by making it last forever it would hurt progress. Forget for a moment that ACTUAL property rights only exist because of scarcity. If there was no scarcity, property rights would be meaningless. That being the case, there is no scarcity when it comes to intellectual property. If this gentleman creates a coaster with hulk's face on it, he has not deprived the copyright owner of any property. Indeed has had increased supply. The argument that somehow he is stealing money from Disney is as stupid an argument as the argument that automobile manufacturers were stealing money from the horse and buggy makers. It is not the govts job to protect your source of income. Don't just bend over. Question this horseshit. Your quick to condemn this guy, you should be condemning your shit government.

    Excellent video & a great money making idea. Another great product idea to add to my Etsy Craft Shop. Would also like to see how you burn the images directly onto the tile, so they are indelible / permanent. Keep up the good work.
