I agree with you at the time I was happy they finally put out the album and I think anyone who’s not in the music buisness will have a hard time understanding that it does take alot of time to switch from one label to another and as I understand it now you have to be able to sell an insane amount of product in order for a label to want to keep you on at least that’s what I’m hearing. I could be wrong of course but yeah I’ve listened to the album three times and the title song is actually pretty damn good and I don’t think Dexter Is straining his voice that much

I'm sorry to blow your idea behind Gone Away but.... The story that Dexter wrote this song after his girlfriend/wife died during a car accident is actually only fiction. I've believed it to be true too for almost 20 years. But recently I've heard an interview with Dexter, where he's been asked exactly that question and he tells the whole story behind the song. He just thought he would loose her or his own life in a shop shooting. Kristine Luna was his wife from 1995 - 2012. She never died. They divorced in 2012.

Been a fan since 1998, I was 15. The single was pretty fly for a white guy. I loved it. Never heard anything with some much energy. Purchased the album and it set me on a course to be exposed to some of the best music and bands in the world. I had all their albums at one point but over the years lost/gave away CDs which I regret. I’ll still put on their albums a few times a year. I totally agree with you on this album. The one I’ve enjoyed the most is Army of One dunno why just like it. I have to say I still enjoy their cheesy songs after all it’s what got me into them. California Cruising is so cheesy it gives me a bag gut but still I love it. Great video mate really enjoyed it👍

  • @garrylarson5283
    @garrylarson5283 Před rokem +2

I may be biased with what I am about to write. I have always liked the offspring due to the high pitched energy vocals of Dexter and the overall pump you up tempo of the band as a whole. I would not say that I was a fan that followed when there next album was coming out as I’m older now and have a busy schedule etc. But recently, when I had the chance to see them live in Kelowna BC. Canada about a month ago, my love for their music has grown a lot. For older dudes they blew me away. The energy and general stage presence had me wondering why I’ve “slept” on them for the last 5-10 years. So glad I got to see them live, and although the above video has some valid points and I can understand where he is coming from, I feel like seeing them live changed the view that I may have otherwise had. I love the title track because of this, but may have felt slightly different if I didn’t see it performed. Anyways, they definitely still rock!

On Greg K leaving - This is pure speculation on my part so please take with a pinch of salt - but I am guessing his leaving had something to do with touring or not wanting to tour or not being willing to commit to the band schedule 100%. On not talking about it or addressing it I think that is down to the lawsuit but also just not wanting to air their dirty laundry in public - which in my opinion is a mature way to handle it rather than slagging each other off publicly.
As I said this is speculation on my part and I have not insight or proof to back it up. Even if thats not the case there is 2 sides to every story so it's unfair to judge either side without the facts.

This album has like 7 banger songs, and the rest seems like fillers, but I'm really struck with Offspring's behavior for the founding member, Greg K and I agree with you on shaming them. I have read the lawsuit by Greg, and Dex and Noodles cross complaint.. They are arguing that because they are 2 of them they have the right to kick him, because they disagreed with Greg's view on band's present and future... As if Greg wasn't already playing to prerecorded bass lines, and being a submissive bassist in the band, and then they kick him out... And being silent and behaving like Greg never existed... Shame on you guys! I hope Greg will win the lawsuit!

Not to mention “coming for you” and “gone away” weren’t even new songs. I’m glad these guys still play and make records (once every decade) and I’ll see them every chance I get but god damn they jumped the shark a long time ago.

I "like" your criticism of Dexter's voice. Realize the hell that he's old and wants to work with that voice, the fact that it sounds bad to you is a subjective opinion, unless you're a singer, you might have a different opinion about it. And you say "just don't do it." What kind of argument is that? I like that, despite his age, he tries to work with his voice, even if the singers can notice a few mistakes.
And you're completely wrong about Greg K. He also claimed that he would be compensated for his additions to the band, although I understand that after so many years it came as a shock that he was fired, but then to sue Dextrer and Noodles for a share even though he previously said that he did not want a share seems hypocritical to me. So your shaming of Dexter and Noodles is rather over the top.

Pete was advised by doctors not to get it cause of his illness it could kill him! ...but Dexter and Noodles fired him!..they could have had a stand in drummer for venues that required it and let Pete stay as their drummer for recording and until the mandates blew over! ..what they did to Pete was so lame, unprofessional and the complete opposite of what they sang in a song like "all I want" i lost all respect for them after that...also Greg K is not in the band anymore aswell so it's not even really the offspring anymore!

The album is okay. There's some bangers in there with tunes that have got stuck in my head, and there's some not quite bangers. Usual mixture of some serious stuff and not taking themselves seriously. Biggest problem is the runtime, only about 33 minutes. 2 of the 12 tracks are only about a minute long and wouldn't even class as songs (In the hall of the mountain king, really?), and in past albums would have been an extra little bonus on the end of the final track if you left it running for a few minutes. There's a piano and strings version of Gone Away in there, which they have done live before but strange to have it on an album. I too never really liked the arrangement, personally. One of the remaining new songs was actually released as a single in 2015 so technically there's only 8 new tracks. I've noticed there's been lots of complaints about the production but I didn't find it too jarring. So yeah overall its okay but comes across as a bit lazy, despite all the delays it had.

For example, I happen to think Race Against Myself and Spare Me The Details are two of their very best songs, one of them metal-influenced, and one of them almost in the style of a folk song. The latter, in particular, turned out absolutely great!

Seems like they just hit their peak really early in their music careers (during the SMASH days). When Ixnay on the Hombre came out, I noticed that they were beginning to write a few off-sounding songs that didn't quite make sense for the genre they were a part of. And the more albums they came out with after that, the more I kept seeing these silly songs.
And the silly songs began to outweigh the serious songs. I think I counted 2 songs from Days Go By that were actually comparable to their punk-style speed rock.
One positive thing I can say is that the sound quality of their recordings got better over the years. But what good is that when the song-writing gets worse and worse.
I used to be a fan. In fact, they were in my top 5 favorite bands during their early years.
Smash still shines. But they just went downhill over the years and stopped taking the music seriously.

god you are so ridiculous, if you were to make the album you would just make the self titled again..... gone away piano is great. Much better than the original but if you don't play music, you will just want to hear power chords all day.

This is their best album since Ixnay. i sense that they put Gone Away on the album because they wanted the 90s Retro feel. A lot of these songs are fast and melodic like Smash and their 90s stuff. Not a perfect album but their best in over 20 years. The album debuted at Number 27 on the Billboard Charts. Interestingly, Cannibal Corpse's new album made its debut at Number 45 that same week and the new "Kings of Rock" Greta van Fleet made its debut in the top ten the same week with the Offspring.. Despite all the negative talk, Rock Music is far from dead and this album shows that. Can't wait for their next album...

I noticed their apolitical stances and playing both sides of issues. And I agree that if you're going to make a statement, make it. But as a conservative Republican, I can actually appreciate a celebrity not giving me verbatim advice from every other left leaning celebrity.

They're a punk band, dude. They are left leaning, they have made that clear on quite a few occasions. So pussyfooting around these issues does nothing but reaffirm peoples stances. Punk rock is about upsetting the system, and playing the both sides of these issues comes off as cowardly.
