      Rick's level of excitement while doing this video is amazing. You can tell he is "Ride or Die" for Weezer. I pretty much tuned out listening to music in the 90's after a long decade of playing guitar in a band. I tuned out of music in general, so I missed Weezer and a lot of other bands. So, when I started watching their videos a few months ago, I got excited by the level of songwriting craft as well as musicianship going on.

      Well, its played very loose and casual, but steps into a hard driving chorus. The lyrics aren't a typical hard rock subject. The guitar opens by plodingly playing around 4 notes in somewhat varying sequence. It is to the beat but loosely so.
      Then you have background chatter in the opening and after the 1st chorus, which is directly making fun of he "Rockin' Party Dude" set. Many times a Smart Nerd can make the average guy look stupid without his target perceiving it. Methinks Rivers Cuomo has that in spades.
      Metaphorically, it doesn't have common tropes to tell its story...boiled down its, "here, take this, now leave, it doesn't please me, but leave." Still, his indecision contributes to a stereotypical "nerd" narrative.
      just some thoughts.

    Can't forget that this song is also great for sharing "I can't help my feelings, I'll go out of my mind" with the Beatles, "You Can't Do That" in the second verse. I know this is about the composition but I've always thought it was cool to notice.

      As far as I know it started with making commercials louder in radio - if you are skipping radio stations, your ear and brain pay more attention on louder sounds, that's why radio or tv commercials seem so much louder than music or movies (in terms of sound dynamics). Some found out that if it worked with commercials, it could work with songs and then it all started. Of course loudness is attractive for our ear only for a couple of moments, then it begins to tire you but who would care besides some twisted musicians and fans of music like us?

      @@sacredgeometry As we all know, it got ridunculous. Some poorly produced LPs suffered at the hands of the overzealous. Very simply stated for the fellow, but your definition...compression puts the audio in a narrower band that wont clip so easily, and then drive it hard, you drop a lot of stuff you can't hear, some things you can hear, but can be "sweetened". over compress, its ugly. i personally do not think dynamics are a bad thing, as in all things, it is a balance. i think that was the essence, unless i misunderstood you. But as all Engineers & Producers, i have my own approach, within the wide creative bounds of the craft, while maintaining the the optimal sound from the desk.

    • @kilgoretrout3966
      @kilgoretrout3966 Pƙed 5 lety +1

      @@sacredgeometry did u overlook the lead in that i said Very Simply stated? i wasn't going to go into threshold, ratio, attack, release, hard knee, soft knee, et al. to the explanation, nor that compression on the loud end of the signal is referred to as attenuation. OK, how about it lessens the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest?
      Is that what you wanted to hear?, cuz i wasn't dumbing it down for your benefit, and when i asked if that was in general what you were saying was in reference to what was asked in three sentences;
      Over compress, its ugly. i personally do not think dynamics are a bad thing, as in all things, it is a balance. i think that was the essence, unless i misunderstood you.
      Try not to fall from your horse.

    The opening lyric "I can't help my feelings I go out of my mind" is a direct cop from the Beatles' "You Can't Do That". John sings those exact words at the end of the last verse in one of his signature songs about jealousy. I have no idea if Rivers had that song in mind when he wrote "Hash Pipe" or if it's just a coincidence. As far as I'm concerned it's another thing that makes this song great.

      This is incorrect. Ric Ocasek sang on the majority of the Cars song (36/60 album songs), as such he was the primary lead singer. Add to that the fact that he wrote nearly EVERY Cars song, regardless of who sang, it is Ocasek that made the Cars more than anyone else. That said,most of my favorite songs of theirs had Orr on lead vocal, but all of them were written by Ocasek.

    This song was so important to me. I was 10 years old when it came out and I was already interested in guitar, begging my mom I wanted one for a while. The next day after I watched the music video for the first time in MTV, I went into the music room at school that had a guitar and out of intuition I started figuring out the notes of the main riff (just the root notes, had no idea about power chords). And I did, the first thing that sounded like a song I knew, played by me on a guitar. 18 years later, here we are, with a little more theory knowledge, figuring out what I loved about it with Rick. Thanks.
