    You would think the whole purpose of the fuse the blew would be to prevent the GPU from taking a lethal voltage hit.

    • @andersjohansson36
      @andersjohansson36 Před 7 měsíci +7

      Fuses do not primarily protect against overvoltage but against high current. In this case, the high voltage has for a short time caused sufficiently high current to trip the fuse but not fast enough to protect the CPU

    • @WasatchElectronics
      @WasatchElectronics Před 6 měsíci

      The fuse actually worked in this case, it prevented the dead power stage from pulling tons of current and blowing up, causing PCB damage. What NRF doesn't know is that 3-4 ohms on pex is typical for this card, and if he would have just looked at the circuitry a bit more this likely could have been fixable in 20 minutes or so. Unfortunate to see this card be put aside for parts when it's completely fixable :/

      @chubbysumo2230 Před 7 měsíci +1

      It's an EVGA hybrid card, the 30 series cards don't allow you to overclock them and kill them, they either go thermally limited, power limited or core limit. Unless you attach an external voltage controller, you do not have any voltage control on the card. This means that it doesn't matter what overclock you apply in software, it will only go as fast as its able to go, or it will be unstable. It will not burn up.

      It's not only EVGA 3090s. Other AIB also face the same issue with their 3090. Nvidia underspec the reference RTX 3090 VRM requirements for AIB to follow. You don't hear 3090Ti having these mess because those cards have significantly buffed up their VRM.

    • @silversrayleigh1399
      @silversrayleigh1399 Před 7 měsíci +14

      That's the most likely cause. People intentionally destroy their hardware for very few extra fps, I don't get it. The 3090 is a very capable card you'll have absolutely no need for overclocking!

    • @nicoladiiorio8898
      @nicoladiiorio8898 Před 7 měsíci +1

      few years back, perhaps. now the overclocking is focused on downvolting rather then overvolting. hardware is already overclocked from manufacturer, reducing the amount of heat (either with lover voltage or better coling solution) the gpu or the cpu will stay in boosted range longer and at higher frequency. only few goes for overvolting as it's less effective

Cant figure out whether the motherboard or the processor. is bad.

    Haven’t bought anything other than cheap GPUs because my demands are meager, usually playing older games if any. Then my question is - is it difficult to claim the warranty on GPUs that breaks or will they simply just turn the customer down by blaming poor cooling, overclocking or poor installing of the card?
    If so, then people should really rethink the need to buy the more expensive GPUs until there is more assurance that the warranty is honored.

    While you had the PEX coil removed you could have induced 1V at the pad to the gpu and verify the dead core with a thermal camera. Maybe one of the caps has shorted out and not the core?

    Prima di dire che è il processore difettoso avrei iniettato 1v per vedere se non è qualche condensatore ceramico o elettrolitico in corto circuito

      @@michaelgleason4791 sadly it isn't, crappy PSU can let this happen without tripping its protections
      crappy PSU's also allow for excessive coil whine by not filtering noise coming into PSU via wall outlet and that noise is caused by things like microwaves,washing machines etc.
      so don't cheap out on a PSU just because in your head it just delivers power

      A few months ago, my Seasonic PSU blew a MOSFET. It popped loudly, blew the main fuse of the PSU, and also tripped a 16A @ 240V fuse in my apartment's fuse box. I thought it fried my components, but thankfully all of them were fine. Could it have damaged them if it was some other PSU?

    Replacing the core makes no sense just buy a new gpu at that point
