    Something that completely changed the game for my hair is a silk turban from Slip. It's sooooo expensive, but it has been a life changing addition to my night time hair routine. I used to sleep in satin bonnets and didn't think silk was really worth it. And if satin is all you can get, definitely get it. It's better to have a satin one than nothing at all. It will still help reduce friction, breakage, and frizz. But since I've gotten the silk one, I will never go back. I sleep in it every night and I have seen dramatic benefits from it. My hair is softer, smoother, and stronger, with almost no frizz. I can't believe one product made such a huge difference, but it truly has! I also got some silk scrunchies from them and I especially love the skinny scrunchies. Super gentle, but they're a lot less bulky than regular scrunchies.

    I don't really get why braids encourage breakage? POC use braids as a protective style all of the time. As long as it's not super tight it's fine. It protects your ends and is a low manipulation style as once it's done you can keep it in for a few days & don't have to manipulate it again.

    • @anikamartens9381
      @anikamartens9381 Před 2 lety +30

      I know with my hair no matter how loose or tight the braid is it will come undone throughout the day and my hair ends up super snarled because it's so fine it slips out. This could be what she's talking about.

      @califlorican Před 2 lety +23

      @AbbeyYung  Před 2 lety +70

    • @x-starlight-x
      @x-starlight-x Před 2 lety +4

      I'm not at that stage of life yet, so I can't give any great tips for you, but I definitely suffer from night sweats due to medication I take, and I've found tying my hair in a loose ponytail with a silk/satin scrunchy and then loosely plaiting the end helps keep the hair in place, thats if you have a bit longer hair or even just loosely tying it up. A satin hair band helps damage the hair less and leave less marks. Also there are cooling pads you can insert into your pillows that can help cool you down. I'm not sure where you live but they are available in the Uk so should definitely be available in the US. I'm pretty sure they even do pillows with in built in cooling gel. So maybe that's something to look into. Good luck

    Extremely fine hair nets have been a game changer for me. I can use all the loose styles without them falling down because the hair net keeps everything together without requiring tight bindings.
    I often use a hosiery elastic as you mentioned to make a very loose ponytail and then carefully pull the hair into a hairnet making sure to keep all of the strands smooth (no tangles). Once my pony is in the net I can gently loop it up over the hosiery elastic and hold it in place with a gentle clip, open pins, or even a hair chopstick (traditional hanfu style ornaments are my favorite).
    This works wonders. My hair has never been so happy. When all the strands are carefully protected in the invisible net they don’t suffer from tangling or activity based friction and my hair slides right out super shiny and silky smooth.
    Sometimes I even use a silk jumbo hair tie then carefully wrap my hair around it before covering with a hairnet to create silky waves.
    Those invisible hairnets are underrated! I can now create the most elegant styles without causing any kinks, stress, or binding on the strands or roots. Total blessing because I can’t stand the hair sitting on my neck, as you mentioned. 😅

    A great way to remove those tiny rubber bands without breakage is to soak them in oil before putting them in your hair. It makes them slide out so easy! Or you can just use an eyebrow razor and gently press it on the band to cut it out of your hair without any risk of cutting your hair with it. Hope these tips help!

      @@AngelPrimsepski it depends on the kind of bands you use. If they're true rubber bands, then they won't break. What is your recommendation for when your work is a workout. I don’t have a sit down desk job. I work at a Hospital. I absolutely cannot have loose hair hanging down because I can’t stand how it feels to have loose hair tickling me in my face and on my neck when I am moving around a lot bending stretching lifting reaching and constantly walking. I also cannot have long hair laying loose that people could grab or yank. I also cannot have any hair dangling out that could possibly get dipped/dragged in other peoples body fluids. It also needs to fit under PPE and not be tangled in masks and face shields when they are regularly changed. Stabby hurty pins and clips are not an option for me on 12 hour shifts. Suggestions?

    I love your videos! I did want to also mention that we wear loose braids at night to reduce friction on the pillows which can cause breakage. And it's the same thing during the day. If your hair is in a very low pony or any other style where most of your hair is going to be swinging back and forth against your shirt it causes that same friction damage that you would get from sleeping on a pillow. So I just wanted to throw that out there as well as something to keep in mind

  • @evolvingboard

    I used to use the "traditional" elastics. I'd use two and keep my hair in a high tight pony almost every single day for years. Yeah, I had constant headaches (wonder why) and it didn't do my hairline any favors. Now I do a low loose pony with a scrunchie or just have my hair loose during the day.

    I need to have my hair braided for BJJ to minimize it getting pulled or snapped off but I try to leave it down as much as possible when I'm not training or running. I still have some breakage but it has definitely lessened from when I kept my hair tied tight for 12 hours/day. I'll have to try the twist for when I sleep because I wriggle out of my silk scarf and my husband pulls it when It's totally loose.

    I cant put my hair up in tight ponys or buns bc it hurts my scalp too much and I will get headaches. I have been using scrunchies more often and I will use them to create a low loose bun or pony since I need to have my hair pulled back for work. I bought those soft cotton hair ties you mentioned and I love them!

    I tend to use a silk band and take two sections. The bottom half gets tied up first, then the top half in a loose silk scrunchie over the top. I don’t feel any pulling but it stays through my aerial classes, work and figure skating 🥰

    Hi! Brand new to your account... And at 40 (ugh!!!!) I have finally accepted after a horrible perm in 2016 on my pin straight hair - I need to learn how to care for the waves/curls better. I can't seem to find a bonnet to wear to bed, though, thru a woman on TT, she shows how to use a large scarf to protect at night... But I still have issues because I have to use a cpap which means - head harness. I'm just wondering if I should pineapple (never knew it was also used for hair) and then wrap or just let my hair hang out while covered with the "satin" scarf? And FWIW - as a teenager in the 90's - I'm feeling WAY too seen with those clear elastics... Because regardless of how I style my hair for being worn during the day or when I sleep - it always gets really tangled and I see my stylist every 6 weeks or so... Now off to scroll thru your TT!

    These are all good tips, but what would you do in my case? I go to work daily, where I often have to wear a head lamp and hearing protection. And going back and forth to work I have to hold it somehow. Also I do some fencing wearing a fencing mask. All seems to be hell on my hair. I recently cut it short as it keeps getting damaged and breaks.

    I wish I could do these loose styles, but my hair is so thin and fine that nothing stays put. Ever since I was a child, if I were to use a clip in my hair I could clamp it shut and it would still slide out. I'd have to tie an elastic underneath it and close the clip over it. Even now, I can tie a relatively small hairband in my hair three or four times around. Lately, I've been trying to sleep with my hair in a loose bun using silk scrunchies, yet without fail I wake up in the morning with the scrunchie lost somewhere in the bed and my hair loose again.

      Look up Morgan Donner’s “no elastic” video. She tied up her hair close to her head using ribbons using a historical hairstyle. She grew her hair down to her waist. The ribbons take on the weight of the hair too so that your roots are doing less work. Maybe try out that hairstyle?
      Edit: the video is called “I stopped wearing hair elastics for a year and I’m never going back.”

    SILK CAPS!!! I can’t stand my hair in ANY style sleeping but with a cap it’s so comfy and my hair has zero frizz after.
    I’m guilty of the night bun but I cannot stand hair on my neck .. also the styles you wear are too heavy for my head so I do those “not quite pulled all the way through” ponies. Great quality hair care and a silk cap suits me the best :)

      Same I will braid my bangs and pull it all into a mid to high ponytail. That way my ponytail isnt pulling on my front hairline and giving me a headache. Or if I am doing covid ICU I do not like my hair on my collar so I will put it in a low bun again with the braided bangs. I will also use spin pins to do the bun, it is more secure and doesnt rip at my ends.
