- Every new trail in the wild draws me to follow it, I almost always know whose it can be .... occasionally I check some. I pass the paths I have been through many times... during the summer heat, storm, at night or by fog and snow. Often occupied with my own thoughts while my feet remember the way to go. My bare head searching over the memories. Once, long ago, as it seems, I touched what was untouchable. The world of wolves. Is it possible to describe it in words at all? Those days in the wild can never be forgotten. Wolves howling? At a time when their cubs were too small, the wolves did not howl ... they were silent so someone unknown would not accidentally discover where the litter was. That would endanger the safety of the family. But when I would join them, soon they would all howl together. The satisfaction of being together again ... all in number, confident at the gathering and free... announcing everyone in the area that they are here, it is their home. When, after several days, I would leave the wolves, they would be silent but I did not know for a long time that soon after a while they'd start howling because of sorrow. Once as I left them, when I came to Landrover I stopped for a moment to check the cargo I was driving on the roof. I turned the engine off for awhile and accidentally heard them all howling .... it echoed from all sides ... I could not stop my tears.

Oh, it took me years and years to achieve their trust and it certainly wasn't that easy.
Fortunately a small part of my relationship with them I managed to record on tapes.
Who would believe something like that ever happened? But it did. Often it looks to me like a dream that happened once long ago.

Istina je da mislimo da nešto znamo. Da, drugi je to svijet kojeg ni sam nisam očekivao.
Zaista sam imao čast provoditi vrijeme s njima kroz puno, puno godina i na tome sam im neizmjerno i zauvijek zahvalan.
Od ushićenja i divljenja sve bi o njima ispričao no puno toga moglo bi im u ova vremena naškoditi. Znao sam često reći:
možda je bolje da život vuka ostane tajna...za njegovo dobro..

Do not worry, I know what you feel and understand well what you want to say.
For me such the howl means even much more because I was connected with them for many, many years ... we became a kind of family what resulted with specially strong bonding between us.

Danas mi se sve to čini kao jedan nevjerojatan san. Kao da se sve to nikad stvarno nije ni dogodilo.
Srećom moja stara kamera uspjela je dio te avanture zapamtiti.

Što više vremena provodim s ljudima to manje mogu vjerovati da sam u životu imao čast biti s vukovima. Prilično sam situacija uspio zabilježiti kamerom za mojih boravaka u planinama pa srećom ne treba puno pričati jer slike govore dovoljno.

Prekrasno kao i uvijek ... najljepše oči i najljepši zvukovi planine, koji se na žalost sve rjeđe mogu čuti ... a ti si imao čast i privilegiju biti voljeni dio vučje obitelji, izuzetno i neprocjenjivo iskustvo koje je pretočeno u sjećanja ... iz nekih drugih vremena i svjetova ... srećom si ih zabilježio ... hvala što ih dijeliš sa nama ... znam kako je teško ... howl, howl ...
Znal sam da će ti se dopasti i da ćeš upravo takvim riječima reagirati.
Nek je i jedan od njih preživio ... to je uspjeh i meni najveća nagrada.
A plaća (kad se već sve mjeri samo i jedino u novcu)... to je sve ono "besplatno" iskustvo stečeno uz njih i sa njima kroz najveći dio mog života. No to nije sve ... nažalost, mnoga saznanja i beskrajno zanimljive detalje o tom veličanstvenom stvorenju jednostavno ne mogu opisati nit kome ispričati jer čini mi se da čovjek još nije dosegao nivo s kojega bi to mogao shvatiti.

Nažalost, sve ih je manje zbog dobro znanih razloga koje sami sebi još uvijek nismo spremni priznati.
Često ovakve tragedije kakve se u ljudskom društvu događaju danas dovedu do toga da divlja priroda dobije bar na kratko neki mir.
... tada se dijelom oporavi do slijedećeg uznemiravanja koje je negdje dovelo do istrebljenja.

the union you have with wolves of Velebit mountains is clear, you are someone whom they recognize as a friend or even as a member of the pack, some time ago I saw your movie about a couple of wolves and their puppies that you raised them for a time, and you returned that family of wolves to freedom to the mountains of Velebit, later you came back time by time to see them and gave them food as a gift, as only a very close friend does, ...Animals have memory, animals have feelings, animals communicate more intensely than we know or imagine. My friend Pavle, you are in the memory and in the heart of Velebit's wolves. That is what I see in this video. Thank you for sharing this valuable proof of animal intelligence.

It is nice to hear from you again ... especially such the comment. Thank you my friend. Wolves ... trust and bonding is what we gained through all those years. I'd say that such a deep relation can't be even compared with anything human. I am really not sure if I would ever be able to explain that. There is another list of videos describing much more on that, ready to be uploaded since long ago but as I often have a kind of troubles with this network I never managed to post them.
Even that documentary you mentioned has been blocked worldwide due to so called copyright claim on a single audio portion after it reached over 107,000 views in 5 years. That copy still stands on the list with completely removed audio but I uploaded another copy two years ago that is OK for watching. For me it is impossible to understand that nor I have time to think about that.
I am glad that I did something like that pack release and that I succeeded to help them survive through all those years. The signs of their presence in the wild is enough to be reward for all my efforts.

Looks so much like the North of Spain
When I was a child Spain hardly had wolves
Now they have made a huge comeback
50 percent of the country has wolves, especially in the highlands
As long as they are not poisoned or shot they are actually quite adaptable
In fact it can be at least similar for both is close to Mediterranean area and coast so the climate and landscape have not much differences. The fact that wolves came back can mean that people do not move much away from urban places so enough space is left for wolves to feel themselves safe. Imagine how much free space they normally need to feel themselves that way. The other fact must be that the public respect for that species became bigger. So from once endangered, wolves came to their normal status concerning numbers and the size of their population. We can only hope this will stay so and there will be no more wars between wolf and man as over quite a long period of years through the past.
Spain can only be proud having them for they really are the treasure most of nations can only imagine.

In the time when all that took place many thgings surprised me. Things were happening not as I expected. I never believed wolves would stay and more wait for me whole the year. I traveled to the mountains as often as I could afford ... whole that year through intensively. I am glad that I decided to record most of details ... imagine how many experiences can be described by words only ... I didn't manage to film all. It is nice that at least a part of that can be shared with you and to present a little different truth about the wolf f than the usual and current ones . Thanks.

Ako ikad prestanu problemi koje svim autorima ova društvena mreža često zadaje pa budem odlučio postaviti još jednu seriju filmova o vukovima ... tek ćeš tada vidjeti što je to, kak veliš "čudovito".
Ljudi o vukovima pojma nemaju nit će ikad imati jer ih ne prihvaćaju kao pravo inteligentno biće kao što je i svaka životinja na ovoj planeti u skladu sa svojom osobnosti. Čini se da je jedini ne-inteligentni stvor taj takozvani homo sapiens ... izopačen, nastran, pokvaren ... pohlepan i vječno nezadovoljan. Upravo internet pokazuje da nas samo gluposti zanimaju a za bitne stvari nas nije ni briga. Kao da budućnosti za nas ni neće biti. Kod životinja je sve na svome mjestu i baš sve ima razlog i smisao. Vukove sam oduvijek lako razumio a ljude nikad.

It is not easy to approach those wild areas that I visited much more often those years. All the emotions come back suddenly. Although I'm often trying to keep my memory away, they can not be deleted. Sharing them makes it easier to bear. For me, to become accepted by the wolves wasn't easy at all and that has been a great responsibility. Hope you can imagine that. Thanks Annie.

Dear friend there is much more to be said ... I knew well that such the experience can happen only once in time so I really did my best to film as much as I was able to. 26 years ago it was ... and still I am not sure people should have to know those facts on wolves. Even despite quite high knowledge and let me say high level of inteligence most of them are not ready to accept that magnificent wild creature decently and in a way as it really deserves.
Ah, my dear Pavle, the Velebit mountain was a different place in 1992. This intimate portrait of a wolf family, partly raised by you, could no longer be possible in this world we live in now. I wonder how you would be able in 2018 to release a pack of wolves in that mountain. Not very likely with a plethora of tourists, trail bikes, hunters and other gadgets seen in this so called natural world which to these people are the normal state of affairs. Luckily you have filmed your precious wolf family at a time that no longer exists, but only in memory and that cannot be ever forgotten.
Lik, howling for his mate and dear little Laca, his mate, responding first with a howl-bark, warning her pups of danger and then she answering and acknowledging Lik's howl are heart wrenching. While in the background, can be heard the sound of little pups doing their best at perhaps preliminary howling. Altogether a most beautiful look at a time which no longer exists, unfortunately. Thank you for sharing this precious and intimate time in your life.

Dear Joan, I am afraid you are right ... everything changed and people do not accept the nature as they did before. They do not have the time to enjoy its beauty on a decent way. How can we expect them to respect the remains of wilderness and wildlife in general!? It is not treated as it deserves.
Other values are of interest to the artificial soul of today's "digital" man. Seems like he needs all to be activated on a single click on "enter" or "delete" ... that won't work in nature no matter how we try. Nor the command "repair" will work ever. We came far away from nature ... some even further than it would be tolerable. That gap can't be repaired easily.
Therefore, there is no expectation of the right decisions in relation to nature. Do we know where we belong to? What is the meaning of "life" at all.
Man still only takes, cuts, destroys without thinking how much remains and how much more is still possible.
I tried to give back something that was kidnapped and repair the damage done. Nothing else makes sense like that. Let a single wolf continue the kind ... I succeeded. You can imagine what honor was to be with them.

Nice to receive such the comment, indeed. There will be more, as I believe unless Google won't continue witj those bad games on copyrights ground. The "Wolf Man" is blocked WORLDWIDE despite all the facts I name to dispute ...
on the other side my own videos are "stolen" and reuploaded on other users channels. I can't do anything to protect my own rights. What I am affraid of that I'll have to delete the channel entirely if things like that will continue. Google destroyed the image of You-tube as it was at the beginning. Instead of editing new films and sharing them I am fighting against Google system as it seems. Hope at least some wrong solutions will be organized in better way soon.

Do not worry I'll find the way ... as in this case, I made spare copy of that documentary with erased claimed portions. It has less views at the moment (12,000 not 108,000 as the blocked one) but I do not care about that. Money isn't important ... if nothing else that experience is my reward. Google makes troubles once one crosses 100.000 views as forums explains ... but I do not mind for as you said ... all the list can be easily copied to any other network or separate site. I'll take care about that to ensure my viewers to watch the wilderness on my way.
I know that "soccer" makes more money than wolves ...
"Wolf attack sequance" as one of my uploads proves that the best way possible. This explains all.

Though most of these extremely emotional events took place 26 years ago I have to say that such the memories is simply impossible to forget. When ever I visit the mountain and get near those areas again , memories come like lightning... It seems to me like I hear the paws on the ground again. I was trying hard to avoid any possible contact with them for years to keep them away and on their own. It was very difficult to decide. I knew they would follow me. In fact I believe they did although I couldn't check that always. They ought to become "wild" and on their own ... anything different would mean the risk for their survival. Initially they tried to check other visitors thinking that one of them could be me as well. Luckily, even though Lacha got wounded by hunters, I managed to recover the situation and pull them away even further into the wild before the winter. I do not believe anybody would be able to imagine what a hard times I was passing through ...
I can imagine your fear and your doubt dear Paul. I hope together with you together that “your” animals will stay healthy and that no hunter will cross their way. Good luck!! ♥

Brilliant stuff Pavle. It was a wonder to hear them use their voice making shapes with it even. Question. What's their prey in this region? I just wondered what the eco system was like. If it was healthy. All the best. Mark
I remember that I was so excited those days when they started to howl ... all till then they were extremely quiet hiding in fact their presence ... I'd say they didn't treat the area as their own home until they discovered and checked it all to be sure it is safe for them. In that time there were no cameras like today what amateurs could afford besides in a way I feel myself very sorry for the I didn't have enough tapes for recording ... I was absolutely aware such the things can happen only once. Checking the area frequently I have seen remains of piglets of wild boar, skin of hedgehog, hair and bones of hare, red deer in their droppings. What I managed also to film was that Laca (female) especially, was very fond of grasshoppers (locusts) what she had in abundance and effortlessly caught all the time. Often she took them in quite a big number so that she needed not to hunt anything else except some animals for the cubs to start eating fresh meat while learning how to hunt. I planned to visit the area after many years ... with Tin who spent a few days with me in last October. The truth is that I was trying hard to avoid visiting those places for years because I was afraid that wolves could decide to follow me ... what in fact happened so that hunters wounded Laca after Lik came close to the mountain hut searching for me.
Those were really hard times for me ... and it is not easy to recall them ...
Let the wolves be free n reign in the wilderness
Even if captured their soul can't be but free.
They have their exact place in the world of living beings.
They really know what they want.

@@agneslee5561 If the times are not safe for their kind, wolves control their mating and won't raise their cubs. Honestly I am not concerned about them nor the numbers because men will surely destroy himself alone before so there won't any danger for wolves. Sad for us but true ... the history proves that well.

Njihovi potomci jesu i još im pronalazim trag i oznake.
Godinama sam namjerno zaobilazio taj prostor da me ne počnu slijediti pa da ih ne "navučem" na sebe. Tako sam svoje posjete planinama usmjeravao prema šumama gdje uglavnom medvjede sasvim često sretnem. Uspio sam ih snimiti prilično često jer sam noćima spavao upravo u njihovom staništu.
Vuku treba višestruko veći prostor za kretanje i mogao sam ga uspješno pratiti dok sam bio mlađi.
Sir. I love your documentary. I became a biologist because of my love for the wolf. I have question. Have you considered raising more wolves or have you looked into the wolf mix with German shephard program that the Russian military has. Apparently they seem to be super animals. I'm sure a lot of it propaganda. But I'm compelled to ask because they're using what seems to be high content wolf for police and protection work and they are responding. Which is something I know wolves generally don't do well with. Commands. Which is why I was doubtful.
In fact this isn't a documentary but real life story. Even I am always trying to bear that in mind. Considering your question I'd suggest you to take a time and chack the rest of my uploads (131 already posted most of on wildlife and wolves especially). You can find more details needed to understand the reasons of my actions. People all over the world often often come to the odd ideas not thinking about the consequences ... damage and pain caused to those hybrids. Just have a look on all those sorts of dogs today ...we have created with our stupid ideas ... many of them live short and probably suffering in pain because of physical hysical disadvantages that are potentified by breeding as positive. Do we want do simmilar with wolves? That proud animal is the symbol of real wildernes and will never allow us to tame it. For each attempt against we will bear the consequences. Wolf belongs to wildlife and only wildlife. Besides, nature makes the rules on this planet, ours is only to obey them. Thanks.

I uz ovakvu zakonski proglašenu zaštitu te veličanstvene životinje na koju bi mnogi diljem svijeta bili preponosni, čini se da se nećemo još dugo moći dičiti njenom prisutnošću.
Vuk će sam odlučiti ima li smisla ostati tamo gdje je rizik preživljavanja možda postao prevelik.
