How did I provoke the wolf to howl | Velebit

  • I rarely get close to those wolf habitats ... into their real environment. Remote and wild. I wouldn't ever ruin its peace and harmony. But memories often turn me back in those times when I often spent the night with the wolves. Extremely rare and special and the most beloved experience to me. I carried a small amateur camera and managed to record moments that I felt would never happen again.
    1992. A couple of wolves with their cubs somewhere in the mountains and I.
    And the wind that kept us all together hidden well ...
    (Pavle Balenovic:Velebit)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    HRVATSKI PRIJEVOD: Rijetko se popnem u blizinu onih vučjih staništa ... u njihove prostore. Najdivljije. Upravo zato da im ne remetim mir. No sjećanja me često vuku u ta vremena kada sam često noći provodio s vukovima. Iznimno rijetko a meni i najdraže iskustvo.

      I am absolutelly glad that you accepted this video in such the way.
      It wasn't easy at all to record and them assemble the archive shots that are filmed long ago on quite obsolete video format and come out with it here in public. But I believe that the content is what's most important here proved by the only document I can offer and share. Now I realize what the efforts and work were invested into that all ... in modern language today people would call it "the project". But it wasn't the project at all just the real life story of a person who respected the wildlife as much as he can.

Dear friend, that world is unbelievably far away from the life we are living today and all the knowledge we know on wolves and wildlife in general. Wolves would always accept us but we do not want to accept them.

    You have a new pair of shoes, dear Pavle. I have it too: Hanwag Alaska (the old Meindl were broken after 13 years). You did a good job to provoke your wolf for howling. "The wolf-whistler" :-) Yes, I also know some noises to call for young foxes. But it works not always so well.
    Have a fine weekend,
    Greetings,
    Helmut

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, first new shoes after who knows how many years.
      Concerning that call for his she-wolf ... I just wanted to tell that it doesn't matter how you do that and what language you use as long as you mean that cincerly. There is the universal language all the animals understand. That wolf spent almost 18 years with me ... enough to read all my thoughts. I believe that if I would try to imitate the howl of the wolf , wolves would start laughing at me for it will be fake in fact ... and surely something wrong because they have a lot different ways toi howl, each with different meaning. Some of them I could understand but honestly I do not know all thgeir language even after so many years spent with and near them.
      Besides, Laca (the she-wolf) away on the high mountain slope used to take care where I am all the time. I had not to worry about that at all. She took good care and control over all the cubs, hidding them somewhere where she decided to. She too answered on my "not so loud" whistle so that hunters can't hear me... but loud enough to be heard by wolves. Wind always covered all the noise we made and kept us well hidden.
      There will be more details I plan to share as I hope,
      till then best regards to the foxes and you and take care.

      Thank you, dear Pavle. Yes it is so mysterious to understand the nature and the language to *some special animals* that we love. We should choose the noises that only we and these animals understand and not the hunters of our friends. We use our own language. After 18 years it needs not special words but only a few personal noises.
      Take care of you and your wolves ♥, dear Paul.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety

      Those days, I might say moon has been my great companion.
      Being with wolf means being wake from dusk till dawn. For the camera especially those that were affordable in those years filming in low lights has been far too difficult task. I was always trying hard to find the position where from I could expect the wolves to appear ... as the silhuetes so that the shots come at least usable. Darkness was all the rest I could see around and the sound was the only thing left I could record. I was happy when moon was on the sky but as soon as it went away it was total darkness especially if the sky was clear ... millions of stars waited to be counted but I had another task to deal with. Moonlight ... "the nightsun" as I used to call it and wrote in my diary.
      ... God, I must have been crazy ... like the moon shot you mentioned.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety

      I do not have the idea what like that area looks like and what kind of wolves those are but might be that she came relased by someone or even escaped and got lost in the middle of all that traffic network!? ...
      If it is "she" the cubs could be expected already in this time so that would be what makes her appear in the same spot ... where perhaps some food is found ... that could be even the bait that those who control wild-cams left to attract wildlife. ...
      and sure, first to be accused for any damage on sheep will be wolves.
      Who else?! Not even dogs whom people decided not to keep as pets any more.

    I must admit I am a little mystified by your whistling. Did Lik understand that you were whistling for his mate and wanted to help by howling, or, like one of our dogs that reacted to my son's playing the sax and howled in protest and was he, (Lik) too, protesting that shrill sound. I would be very interested in your opinion, Pavle.
    In any event, the howling by Lik did bring in that precious Laca and her puppies to your camera. That peaceful scene on that wonderful starlit night has stayed and will continue to stay in your memory for all time.
    Thanks for bringing us some of these precious memories of a time when you were truly the "Wolf Man."

      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety +4

      In fact how ever I tried to call for her, he would understand that. Don't forget that during 18 years we spent almost each day together. Whome else would he understand better. No words were needed between us, I ma sure you hnow that well. Nor even his own language ... the howling. I knew his language perfecly and needed not to use it but to speak my own language as I did... he understood that well although he could not say a word. I did not use howling nor any imitation ever.
      But our relationship went even further as he had some senses more than people have. Ther are many examples on that.I told you before how he always knew when I am returnig home (after a week being away on movie making). He never missed that and usually announced it to all my whole neighborhood by howling.
      There are many types of howling like in our language with different meaning. The most known is the one that means crying when left alone. This is common by most of our dogs.
      Everyone who would spend this long with them would easily and soon recognize the differences. Blue, who lived with him all her life long learned to howl thou in her own way. She really tried to do her best to make it seem like real wolf howling. But it never looked like that.
      There are many other emotional ways of comunication among wolves that people won't be aware of for long time ... more if we are more and more away from nature. It is not hard to understand wolves but we only need to have a good will for that. YWM

    • @temp24Lno5
      @temp24Lno5 Před 6 lety

      Thank you, Pavle. Having had dogs all my life I got to know some of them them intimately as you did with your wolves, but I know very well that a dog is not a wolf. Far from it, although I felt that some of my huskies were wolf like and had to be treated with care, as you obviously had to treat your wolves with care. It is easy for humans to misunderstand a certain mood in our creatures leading to a trouble or two. There has to be a well understood relationship which some of us get wrong to negate that trouble. It has happened to me more times than I can relate, but I guess wolves are forgiving just the same as dogs. I always felt that they understood me more than I understood them and could easily sense my happy or sad mood and react to it. How can we humans really understand any animal. We, stupid humans, so far from understanding even the basic principles of nature, think we are superior, but once in a while we have it brought home to us how wrong we are by a simple gesture from our beloved animals.
      Howling is a fact of life with huskies who can pull off a reasonable wolf like howl. I always loved to hear them howling so I could pretend that they were wolves. The great "pretend wolves." Having an acquaintance who had a wolf from a young age and hearing her howl with sadness made me realize that a dog howl and a wolf howl, as much as I would like my "pretend" huskies to be wolves, there was a bit of difference which I am willing to admit.
      So, in conclusion, I think you have answered my questions very well.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety

      Faced with all sorts of prejudices about the wolves that bruised me and I almost expected, over time, I crossed and ignored them all. The only thing that had to be respected and what was important between the wolf and me was to realize that we would stay together for a long time. And so it was, 2 months were missing up to 18 years together. For me, wolves like evil beasts do not exist ... it is difficult to explain but I simply understand them well ... because of my love for them since my early age and then because of the experience from being in their society for so many years.
      Man is inclined to complicate everything and all relationships that can not be made clear to any other animal ... and makes them to suspect. Relationships in the wild are much simpler, cleaner, and perhaps even more sincere.
      I know you agree, Joan. Thanks. YWM

    • @temp24Lno5
      @temp24Lno5 Před 6 lety

      One important thing we both forgot to mention is the uncanny ability of animals to read each other's body language. In wolves and dogs it is especially acute and I imagine, with both our experiences with canids, it sometimes amazes us. But it doesn't stop with these animals. I have seen it in both deer which I studied for many years and my horses. Perhaps you can recall a famous horse named "Hans" who was purported to be able to add, multiply and subtract any equation which his owner threw at him. After years of deliberation, it was found that Hans was able to read his trainer's body language expertly. Humans may use, correctly or incorrectly, body language in any situation, but it is not as highly developed as an animal's ability. This is just a note which I should have added when I first mentioned your whistling. It should have answered my own questions immediately.
      Yes, you summed it up perfectly in saying that in relationships with animals it is far less complicated and far more honest and sincere than with humans .
      ywm

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes you are right again. That body language is what we all have ... understandable to many beings no matter what kind of they are. Mostly we are not even aware of it ... it is like a reflex. We do not use it as we should but start thinking about how to contact. Then the body reacts differently, too, for example, the scent of our body changes what shows the state of our nerves or fears. The animal is wondering then why we are afraid if she approaches us as a friend?
      When a man react to a wild animal using only reflexes, the instincts, everything turns out better than anything planned in advance.
      We often analyze each step in advance what needs not to be not necessary. Animals could see that as insincerity or who knows how else. Our caution may sometimes be overwhelming and have the opposite effect ... animal could ask why do we not trust them!?
      As I see the things today, seems like we always remain on the verge of knowledge and never get deeper into the spiritual spaces of relationships with the wild beings. The wildlife surely surprises with intelligence, animals prove that with their survival all the difficulties successfully. And we even underestimate them.
      This is how I see it at the moment thou there can be different situations that could perhaps need deeper discussion. I am not the expert so I can speak from my own experience only.
      I used to lie on a slope bellow the grassy peak as at the beginning of this video, and observe the wolf that sat beside me ... the wind blew through the fur ... I was immensely pleased to hold my hand on his neck ... can you imagine this? That was an extraordinary honor for me.
      ... I touched the world that most of us will never understand.
