- "My goal is to survive past move 40...I'm going to have to visualize it's actually Magnus."
Canadian grandmaster and renowned chess streamer Eric Hansen takes the Play Magnus Champions Challenge on Day 6 of the Oslo Esports Cup 2022.
Players will have 2 minutes on the clock. The goal is to beat 10-year-old Magnus Carlsen in as few moves as possible, or if you're lost, to last as many moves as possible!
Eric has beaten the real-life Magnus in the past, most recently in Round 10 of the Airthings Masters back in February. But can he beat the 10-year-old app version?

In video games, there's always a final boss. In chess, I'm the final boss.
Magnus always a chess champion but now trying to become a poker and banter champion too 🏆🏆🏆🏆
😂😂😂
Yes sir 😂
Stock fish is like that optional boss in JRPGs hidden in some random cave that 1 shots your whole party 😂
Savage
Even when it's a draw, I still win ;)
Truly goat.
😂😂😂
Not surprised, it's called Magnus app for a reason🤣
No wonder you’re world champion bro
😂
Eric shows great class not to point out how absurdly stacked this challenge is against him. No way 10yo Magnus plays at this speed and skill, while Eric faces a 2 min game with a bad mouse and no premoves. A true ambassador for the sport.
Can renowned GM Eric Hansen defeat 1 year old Magnus, which is actually just Stockfish we programmed to play at 2400 ELO, in a 2+0 blitz game with a shitty UI in which all the pieces look the same and he has to use our slow mouse ? Watch today's episode to find out
After seeing all these GMs playing against Magnus, can we take a moment to appreciate the interviewer? She asks some nice questions, she knows the GMs well and creates a nice atmosphere. Honestly, this goes unnoticed quickly, but we should appreciate good interviewing/hosting skills, because you only realize how important they are when there is a shitty moderator/interviewer, but rarely people point out if an interviewer did a good job!
Kaja might be weak at the chess terms but she's a very impressive commentator/interviewer tbh
She's not wearing a mask. She's a Trump supporter.
@@kshitijsingh4179 I agree, good social skills!
@@kshitijsingh4179 I think she was specifically picked as the host/interviewer because of her lack of chess knowledge; she asks all the questions that viewers new to chess would ask.
@@sb_dunk exactly! She does a great Job at making Sure Nobody gets left Out of the loop! Like anytime the grandmasters say "oh such a Tricky tactic!" She immediately asks "David can you Tell us what's going on?". Great stuff.
"At 10, I was only like 1200"
"Oh so were you a prodigy"
That's why I don't like it when the interviewer doesn't have any idea of chess.
she is like 300 so she thinks 1200s are prodigies😂
He was a prodigy. he just hadnt played alot of chess.
"I was 1200 rated at the time..."
Kaja: So were you a child prodigy?
O_o
Throwing shade
She's asking perfect questions for beginners as they want her to.
Eric lost 100 ELO after this question
Better performance than Anish, who also drew but took the game extremely seriously and refused to interact with the casters while playing, literally saying "don't talk to me" multiple times in the game.
Meanwhile Eric managed to turn the tables on the bot and gain an advantage while explaining his thought process and keeping it light-hearted.
I'd say its more so Eric can talk and still play at the same or very similar level due to all the experience he has doing it whilst Anish doesn't have as much experience multi tasking in that way so knew it would cause him to make mistakes.
Eric is streamer
You should see Eric's first streams. Everyone was pointing how try harding and silent he was and needed to be in order to play chess well. Years of streaming is not a futile experience.
I like that the music budget for the app was like $1. They just played three notes over and over
Tun tun tun, tu-tu-tum
The Peoples Court will come knocking soon.
Look how they advertise a stupid app that doesn't allow for drag and drop. They found a bug in a live show.
Game starts at 4:52
@9:02 - Eric's high-five to Kaja... 🤣 Didn't leave her hanging and didn't care if she wanted one or not (that's why he chuckles). 10/10 high-five technique
It's like that 'Magnus wins!" screen was specially designed to upset Eric. lol
well this was the worst ambient to play chess ever, standing in front of to low desk, bending over the laptop, no pre moves in short time format, also, if im noticing well, you have to click pieces to move( online players will get why this is a misery) and to top it of, after he made a draw in a winning end game( because no time left) you get trolled with "magnus wins" and " you lost in 62 moves" ,,,, just to funny, respect for my dude Eric, keep on brother, cheers from Croatia!
Eric super well spoken here
Keep it up man
Judging from the body language and the fact the game only starts @4:54, I'd say the interviewer lady has a little crush on our boy Eric Handsome 😉
I like that when he is clearly taking it serious and trying not to lose, the system glitches and gives him a loss...you can see the disappointment in his face lol
Spot on analysis! Much respect for Eric!! Speed chess is addicting amd what got me addicted
How sweet. A "morning-TV" interview with Eric Hansen, otherwise the coolest chess streamer online with gabber on his headset.
GM being happy about drawing a game with 10-year-old Magnus. That's how dominant this man has been since he arrived in the chess realm!
Dude it’s stockfish
@@rq4740 lmao 🤣
Eric is the people’s champ. Huge PP and doesn’t walk like a turd burglar
lmaooooo
Under rated comment, needs more likes 😂😂
Computer moves instantly, there needs to be an increment to make this fair.
I think adding an increment would make it too easy
pre-moves need to be enabled for a 2 minute time control
Well done, Eric!
Yes Eric lad, putting in the work
I love the comments of Magnus Carlsen himself the final boss of the chess game
My boy Eric is juiced 💪🏼
Master Oogway: There are no accidents..
Master Magnus: There are no draws..
This is the most convincing game Eric has in the tournament so far.
He handled shakh pretty well
@@bashy8466 I know. First shake is a nice considerate guy. Second, he was drunk the night before because mentally he was thinking that he's playing the underdog of the tournament.
I got respect for Eric now.
N 1 c e O n e . . . GG Eric 😎 🚀
9:11 Notice how our big chief is silent when they draw/win situation comes up. That's probably because our boy is biting his tongue so as not to say "this shit is RIGGED from the start" 😂
He was probably about to say "I literally don't care"
9:19 quote of the match
Let's go Eric!
Eric is good in interviews
That s the only thing he is good at and Marbles of course
@@mortalkombaty7960 and chess obvs
@@mortalkombaty7960 and getting girls probably
@@JimmyBoosterCrate Yeah many things but Chess lol . I m sure he is good at getting man too LOL.
The system glitched at the end, which hints something stockfishy is going on there. 😁
I wonder if this can be an on going event where players in the tournament are to play Magnus app (with both black and white) and prizes to the top 3 finishers. If same score then we go for a tiebreak where we play higher age Magnus. If still same score up to Age 30 then winner is decided through other methods.
The winner gets to down on Magnus
Never seen this guy win one game
Осталось только Магнусу сыграть против Магнуса!)))
Eric: I was 1200 at 10 years old
Kaja: were you a prodigy?
Does she know what a chess rating is or what a prodigy is?
Developer who wrote the function that calculated win just lost his job. :(
absolute fucking tragedy that they can't program an app to say "draw" with a draw. like how embarrassing. if statements too much for you?
Actually I heard it’s programmed to say win if there is a draw and Eric played.
This guy is so cool
Its weird to see Eric with no loud techno music and house party in the background.
Having to click twice instead of dragging cost him so much time. The interface could use some work
Is this still theory?
Good job Eric👍
i come for these videos just to see magnuse comments
Mongoose Cuttlefish
that UI is atrocious
Eric glitched the System 😂
Yeah I love Eric
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE… MAGNUS HIM SELF TO TAKE CARE “MAGNUS 10 YEAR BOT”
Galing mag chess ni congtv
Canada is that kid in class who is sloppy. But will stand up for the right thing, despite the consequences.
Eric is the best chess streamer
Lol this was intense
How tall is Eric? For some reason I thought he would have been a manlet. Sorry for the mistake chief.
Little did he know that soon he would play against adult Magnus and lose.
Go to 4:54 for the match start
So wait, so far, only David has won against Magnus at 10 ryt?
It was a glitch! Always my excuse at online chess ;)
Eric regularly has 2900+ rating in 3 min online. Sometimes 3000+
Magnus at aged 10 was 2300
Great way to show your app is not calibrated
The app is calibrated for classical time format. The computer thinks instantly unlike in real life.
This is not comparable to a game vs magnus at age 10. The time situation is all screwed up.
computer says 'no'
In 12 year pragg gm
What is up with these pawns moving diagonally and eating the pawn below........ 6:04 8:23
I’m almost sure I could draw Magnus age 6 (months).
Age 10 😉
"playing simple chess"
- plays the sicilian
:D
i wouldnt be surprised if they just renamed chess to magnus
let magnus play again against his application
There's already a CZcams video where he plays it and loses. He tries playing quickly and I think he even sacrificed pieces unnecessarily to show off, and he ends up losing.
Why can he move the pawn like that at 8:23?
en passant
Google en passant
@@JimmyBoosterCrate holy hell
Nakamura or Firouzja will show you 😅😅 Caruana miss his chance .. by the way boss still waiting for 2900+
I think liem le is quite good
Surely Magnus has rigged his app for him to win always
Ofcourse computer ai or engine is better at calculation obviously, i would applause eric on that breathe no ever average chessplayer is better than that🤷
EYE CONTACT Eric.
Nah some girls are way too intense with it lol I also enjoy avoiding eye contact sometimes
@@Matt-by3yd that's not the way to go bro. Learn to master your fears
@@Xtr3me0wn4ge it’s not fear at all mate lmao
@@Xtr3me0wn4ge that’d be like me saying learn to master your fears and give hugs to strangers bro. Different strokes for different folks man
Does Elon Musk have a son he doesn't know about? Eric kinda looks like him and has similar mannerisms
Thinking exactly the same. They have similar speech mannerisms too. No offence, but they probably inhabit similar frequency bands on the spectrum, as do so many individualistic mavericks.
Both are neurodivergent. Eric has adhd, Elon has autism
taking this challenge is for suckers- there's no upside
That blonde girl is alright looking =)
Your opinion was needed thanks ☺️
Yea she’s alright
😆 🤣 😂
I only watch this for Kaja 😍
Yeah but he beat Magnus age 30 irl so
Magnus still gets paid when his 10 year old AI wins.
i think i can beat magnus age 1 💪😂
Hahaha
Didn't know Elon Musk played competitive chess!
eric was robbed. eric wins!
He is chessbrah no.....
The girl should learn some chess
He kinda looks like Elon musk
I wanna see Magnus Carlsen play against a 10 year old Wesley So but in #9LX
Eric Hansen looks like he's related to David Howell. I think they share the same Asian ancestors.
Lol draw=loss
Elon Musk takes on a 10 yr old
Elon musk of chess
App is rigged
She has a thing for Eric
why you say that?
@@Nimloth333 projecting
Nah she's just happy to be interviewing a GM with charisma for once. Look at Anish Giri vs Magnus age 10, was way less entertaining than this.
That wouldn't be surprising but let's not assume this quickly
Don't we all
Eric played fine but this setup is TRASH. No premoves and you have to click and cannot drag? That is pathetic
Elon Musk
im sorry i am a big fan of magnus but this app is embarrassing
Eric clowney Hansen lost 6 match out of 7 and now thsis LOL, return to twitch
You sound mad
@mortal kombaty you mad bro? Doing nothing with your life so hating on other successful people?
Why are comments like this always at the bottom of chess videos😂
@@testingsomething5280 For people like you to scroll long down and comment shit.
