  • Before You ask me how I know whether these are Monty's actual references or not, pretty much all of these are things Monty has talked about in interviews and podcasts, he has talked a lot about Tekken and Dead Or Alive, certain anime's like cowbow bebop, and in the RWBY directors commentary he mentioned that the robbery in the first ep of RWBY was inspired by cowbow bebop. You may be wondering how or why I put so much from Road 2, one of Monty's lesser known works. well, in the credits of Road 2 he lists the things he referenced, including Bleach (specifically ep 58), Halo (Obviously), Tekken, and Tom Yum Goong. It was basically free clips for me to include here. I watched Soul Eater recently and saw the clip Monty used as reference for Dead Fantasy III and I lost my crap, I was dancing around the room because I was so surprised and excited.

    Yeah, makes sense, knowing Monty's love for martial arts and basically all of his creations, it really shows how much he got inspired by and the things he loved that he put in his work.

    Didn't know Blake's attack on the Nevermore was from Raiden in Metal Gear.
    Referencing other cool fight choreography and adding your own flair to it should be the standard for action choreos nowadays. No doubt Monty would've taken the entire genre to the next level at this point.

      He worked on Afro Samurai and a game that was cancelled. He never worked on Tekken or Dead or Alive. But he did mention a lot in interviews about referencing Tekken and DOA.

    • @halleyk7Art
      @halleyk7Art Před rokem

      Monty referencing movesets from the game DOA makes perfect sense though. Because he had DOA characters in his Final Fantasy vs DOA videos (Dead Fantasy). They are supposed to fight like that against their opponents.

    Thank you for this. I was a long time fan of Monty's work and felt curious what was it that he used for reference when choreographing the fight scenes. I recognized some moves like Black Star's attack in DF3 but honestly can't believe i didn't even consider the actual fighting games like Tekken and DoA (duh) as possibilities. RIP Monty, I'm really certain that if he was alive today, he would make even more amazing stuff.

    In order to make well built scenes of action, it is best to understand what you are going for. Monty Oum did his by referring to other epic scenes, and making new fight scenes to fit the characters at the time. It does help to take some time on understand what you are trying to go for.

    I wanna mention that in Monty's most famous animation, Haloid, after Master C. (MC for short) breaks ZSS's power armor, and she starts fighting MC with her plasma whip gun, ZSS spins around with her whip-gun treating the whip part like a a sword (She's like a Beyblade). She lands a barrage of hits onto MC as she twirls.
    I think it's a reference to one of the fight scenes in this Chinese film called "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" from year 2000
