Best transformers toyline ever, simple but amazing engineering
i really liked their commitment to certain things in the animated toyline. The Headmaster accessory working on more then just bulkhead, and Ratchet coming with the spot for his medical tool to slot in when Lockdown got released in a later wave were nice touches.
Lockdown was part of the first wave. Ratchet came in the second wave. Still, the point stands that this interaction between the two (technically four as Cybertron Mode Ratchet and Ironhide can use it too) is really cool.
My favorite is probably Leader Megatron. Sure, it's not as impressive as the others, but the cartoon accuracy, cool gimmicks, and overall design really sells it for me.

I find it funny that Rodimus prime was called Rodimus major The reason for this was because there were way too many primes in the toy aisle during transformers animated.
I would argue that Samurai Prowl didn't even hinder the articulation that much. The shoulder pads and hip guards were all ball-jointed, so they could move out of the way fairly easily. The only part that really lost mobility was the head, because the helmet was on a stem. That's probably one of the few cases where I'd actually prefer some partforming.
One thing I would like to give Cybertron Mode Optimus Prime credit for is that you don't need to remove the shield to transform him. No partforming necessary.
you don't even need to remove the axe. its weapon strorage in truck mode are the robot mode hands
I started collecting Transformers right on the tail end of RotF and TFA. I was mostly buying bayverse stuff with my extremely limited funds, so Snarl was the only Animated figure in my collection.
I went on an ebay binge last year and aquired almost all of these figures. Such an awesome toyline.
I really do hope that Transformers Animated comes back, it was such a good show and the toys were so well engineered.
I'm trying to collect the Animated line and recently got Soundwave. All im saying is, if you were just handed him in vehicle mode, you would have no idea it was a transformer. Possibly the best vehicle mode I've ever seen
You are absolutely right! The vehicle feels great in hand and it's like evenly dense, so it feels like one solid car. It also looks really clean when transformed if I remember correctly.
Thanks to this video, I found out that the unboxed Animated Rodimus I got second hand at a nearby toy store is, in fact, the Takara release.
I like the tier list videos I would just like the images enlarged as you're talking about it. Good work none the less.
I believe, if I'm not mistaken and I can actually remember something correctly for once, that Animated is the first time that an Ultra Magnus has actually been a unique mold and not a repaint. Not counting RID2001 because that figure was never specifically designed to be Ultra Magnus, it was just a name drop because of the car carrier alt mode. Animated is an actual homage to the character.
Oil Slick I just wanted to point out that figure was originally designed for the toy line. It wasn't based on any art work that was ever created for the show, he originally was not even suppose to be a real character but apparently Derek liked the toy so much he added Oil Slick onto team Charr in the show. So I think he's the only character in this toy line where the toy was designed before the animation model. Everyone else the animation model was done first and then Hasbro had to figure out how to translate that into plastic.
Thank you for whoever request "I'M THE EVIL MIDNIGHT BOMBER, WHAT BOMBS AT MIDNIGHT?". That tickled a little nostalgia itch even tho I wasn't alive during the old cartoon's time.
I still think Animated Arcee is the best toy of her that has a car alt mode in terms of engineering. It's still my personal favorite toy of her
Fun fact. Back during animated, when I saw samurai prowl, I was so close to pulling the trigger and buying him, but the box didn't show that he could be the old prowl without the side car. So I thought that the figure was part forming the head in the side car and thought it was lame and didn't get it. I only found out as an adult that it was an add on through reviewers and I've been SICK since for missing out on him.

Before seeing TJ's ranking, I just wanna say I have both Animated Ratchet and Soundwave and love them both. Waspinator is high on my wishlist. I'm wondering where they'll all rank :)

As someone who has a waspinator, he is amazing. Probably one of my favourite transformers. His wasp mode foesnt hold together the best but its just so fun
Oh. Okay. Not gunna lie, I was actually interested in hearing specifically about Cybertronian Megatron because almost EVERY TIME I see people talk about Animated's toyline I see multiple people go "Animated's toys were great! ...Oh yeah Cybertronian Megatron was there too I guess uhhh-..." or something. Like, I constantly see people call that toy bad and no one ever explains WHY. So for TJ to say "Toy's good, I like it, A tier" actually disappointed me a little, was hoping to finally get an explanation. Ah well. I remember liking the toy just fine so I guess I feel vindicated in having a positive opinion of it.

For me, the Starscream mould in the Activators size class really stood out.
I really hope we get legacy versions of many of these, especially shockwave.
You can actually change the titles of the tiers on premade lists.
Imo, they should take Slag, Slug, Snarl, whatever the triceratops is called, and turn the head into a shield.
Putting Cybertronian Megatron into A certainly is a choice.
My favorite is definitely Blurr. He looks great in both modes. His transformation is also so unconventional yet effective.
Animated blackout is one of my holy grail transformers simply because of how rare and expensive he is.

Animated is one of the only TF toys I ever had any toys for. I had Bumblebee, Prowl, Voyager Bulkhead, and the Cybertronian versions of Optimus Prime and Megatron. I recently got myself the Rodimus figure and I'm going to get all the Legacy Animated figures they made after really liking Prowl's figure.

This is one of the amazing toylines that came out during the HAYDAY For TF Toys in my opinion (I also love the CYBERTRON toyline and the TF MOVIE toylines)
When I first saw ANIMATED, I was like: "Okay, just a transformers show but CARTOON NETWORK-ized. But as I rewatch it over and over, I realized Just how good it actually was....as an brilliant TF parody :D

I grew up with the tail end of G1 and Beast Wars, but Animated Ultra Magnus is one of my top 10 favorite figures. No nostalgia, I haven’t even seen Animated, but I love that figure.
Animated is still important to my childhood I still have the Jetfire and Jetstorm two pack to this day standing proudly on my self with my other transformers
I would say leader bulkhead deserves a S-tier ranking just because his back kibble can turn into a chair just like in the show haha
Hope this series of toys comes back like the Beast Wars line didvthe past few years. We could see the in around 5 years from now as it would be close to their 20th anniversary.

A really, really great toyline. I really wish Lugnut had gotten the same leader treatment as Bulkhead. I also think this was our first time in ages where our primary Optimus wasn’t a big leader or trailer bot.
The ONLY thing they could have added to the Blitzwing toy to make it better would have been some FREEZE effect missiles, for when he switches to his strategy persona. Or you could have put one freeze missile in one side, and the fire in the other for when he goes crazy :D
I only have three Animated figures: Hot Rod, Jazz, and the smaller Bumblebee for the Bumblebee shelf. I like them.

I would say storyline because we already know he longarm at the end of the episode and we didn’t have much of a bond with him for it to be a hugely shocking reveal.

Okay, honest question about Animated Wreck-Gar: What could you possibly do with a garbage truck's storage compartment other than make a giant backpack or an absolute mess of folded panels that only 3rd party creators find appropriate? _Maybe_ the legs, but that's all I can think of.
There is a clean version of the Deluxe earth Optimus you just have to get the Japan exclusive door prize version. He looks pretty nice. Also allows for a clean US Wingblade version of you have both toys.

Yeah Lockdown looks col just standing there but his permanently bent wrists and barely functional knees would be more than enough to keep him out of top tier on my list
Also we forget how the first wave of animated suffered from a lot of joint tolerance issues

Is it just me, or does Soundwave & Soundblaster reference Rumble & Frenzy via color?
Honestly. I would have put Swindle in D. Purely for the exploding translucent shoulders. The Japanese version has the same problem. And we never got any redecoes of him to harvest better arms from.
I'm more amazed that some people haven't tried 3d printing replacements for those, cause that could save SO MANY SWINDLES!
OK so I have never been a fan of the Animated aesthetic so I never really got into this toy line. The show got by on actually having good writing so I just looked past the overly cartoony style but the toys just look terrible to me. There are a few exceptions though.
Blackarachnia and really any of the female characters didn't suffer that much because they were the only characters who consistently didn't have giant chins. I almost picked up that figure a few times but by the time I actually saw the toy in stores the alternate head had already been revealed in the cartoon and I was kind of hoping for an alternate version to come out with a removable helmet that never happened. A, I'd go S if they did a removable helmet version.
Blurr's figure I didn't like as Blurr but I did like the retool into Transtech Cheetor. The alternate head and how well that figure works as a reference to the cancelled Transtech toy line just made it a lot better to me than the original Blurr. S for Cheetor, C for Blurr.
Samurai Prowl I freaking loved. I could never find that figure in stores but found the regular version shelf warming everywhere. I do not like the proportions of Prowl without his armor. Having the armor on however kind of fixes everything I don't like about his design. His head is way too long and narrow without the armor but once he puts that helmet on it makes his head look wider and the added bulk of the helmet gives the illusion that part of his face is being obscured by the helmet rather than him just having a really skinny face. I love the Legacy version BTW because it fixes the proportions. I am still a little disappointed there's no side car though cause I missed out never being able to find that mold and having a Legacy version would scratch that itch. S for Samurai Prowl, D for regular Prowl.
Waspinator isn't terrible but I didn't like his skinny proportions. C
Cybertron Mode Megatron I just wanted to point out that in the cartoon he was flying backwards and upside down. I don't know why. The toy has a windshield on the back side of the cannon and the way it's pictured always indicates that as being the front of the vehicle mode but the only time we see him using it in the cartoon he's facing the totally opposite direction. Also his design is a reference to 2007 Movie Megatron, overly simplified for the cartoon but they do both have the spiky appearance and similar vehicle modes which makes me hate this figure even more than every other figure in the toy line. If anyone was going to go in D it should be this one. The design is so bad the animators and the toy designers couldn't even agree on which end of the vehicle mode was suppose to be the front. They also disagreed on which side was suppose to be the top because the toy has landing gear on what would be the top of the vehicle according to the animation model. D
Earth Mode Megatron ironically is what I would consider the BEST FIGURE in the entire toy line. It's the only figure not hindered by the overly cartoony aesthetic as he's the only non-female character who doesn't have the freakish proportions. It's ironic because my opinion of the Best and Worst figures in the toy line are both the same character. There's that big of a disconnection between Cybertron and Earth mode. S
Blitzwing, I actually have but to be totally honest the only reason I got the figure is because I loved the character so much in the show. I also picked up Generations Blitzwing because of the face swapping gimmick and being a better proportioned figure. Granted that figure has issues but I still love the character from Animated. A
Shockwave/Longarm Prime, I have the Longarm version. I was going to get the Shockwave repaint as well but could never find that version in stores. I actually customized my Siege Shockwave so that his armor is in Longarm colors and glued Mega Beast Machines Tankor's face to the armor so that it end's up replacing Shockwave's head when he's in his armored up mode. The base Shockwave figure all I changed was painting over the Decepticon insignia on his arms and put Decepticon stickers higher up on his shoulders so they get covered by his armor. The armor does also include Autobot stickers. Anyway... it's another figure I picked up mostly because I loved the character in the cartoon. Though I actually prefer him in Longarm mode because it's better proportioned. How is it that Shockwave still managed to have a giant chin despite not having a face? That said in vehicle mode Shockwave has the better alt mode because the toy has a clearly visible Decepticon insignia on Longarm's crane arm. Ironically they removed the Decepticon insignia on his accessory for the Shockwave colored version where it makes more sense to have it. I actually took a black sharpie to mine to cover that insignia. A for Shockwave colors, B for Longarm colors.
Wreck-Gar I have, again, I bought him because I love the character in the show, plus he's also voiced by Weird Al who I'm also a fan of. The proportions aren't quite as bad on this guy as some other characters but yes I will admit he is a shell former. Only the back tires and the grill actually form parts of the robot, everything else folds up into a huge back pack. However he's also a garbage truck that canonically is SUPPOSE TO have a huge back pack. I did also stick an Autobot sticker on the chest of mine because he literally wore a sticker on his chest in the show. It's upside down in vehicle mode but I feel like the character wouldn't care that's it's facing the wrong way when he transforms. B
Jetfire and Jetstorm, I almost picked up because I love the concept of the characters. Jetstorm on his own isn't that terrible, they don't have the giant chins. I don't really like Jetfire as much. Jetstorm is an actual reference to his Beast Machines name sake even though he's an Autobot not but Jetfire isn't anything. They didn't use a previous Jetfire design. They're suppose to be twins but he doesn't really look like Jetstorm either. Where the heck did that head design come from? It feels like they just name dumped Jetfire because it went with the theme without trying to make him a Jetfire. Also another reason why I ended up deciding against them is because none of them have hands. Like Jetfire and Jetstorms KIND of have hands molded inside their nose cones for the individual robot modes but it remind me of a G1 figure with the way those hands are molded in. The combined mode is even worse. It can't hold anything, there's no ports for it to be able to hold anything. Initially I didn't even realize there were any hands there. I thought the obvious feet were suppose to be his hands but no there are actually fingers and a thumb molded in just nothing is painted and it's very soft molding so those details are completely washed out. I do hope Hasbro attempts a combiner line this again because I love the concept, it's never been done before or since but it would be great if they actually did one with a better design. It's way more interesting than the shirt and pants combiners we usually get. C for Jetfire, B for Jetstorm, D for Safeguard, S for the concept.
