RAM 1500 TOW/HAUL Button Function | What Does It ACTUALLY Do In Tow/Haul Mode?

  • We are looking over the RAM 1500 Tow/Haul Button function and what it actually does to the truck when towing a heavy trailer. The transmission and engine are both slightly affected and in order to increase your engine power and torque when towing a trailer.
first, tow haul mode affects the transmission shift timing, the truck will hold gears longer in order to pump the rpms up and hold that torque longer before shifting. secondly on the transmission, the overdrive gears will not be used (for the most part). my truck with the 8 speed transmission will sit in 6th gear which is a 1:1 gear ratio allowing for once again increased torqued.
On the engine, the MDS system will not be active meaning that the truck will be in 8 cylinder mode at all times to obviously supply you will good continuous power and torque when towing. that being said, this will also increase you engine braking when going downhill. reason being because when the MDS system is active and when the truck is going downhill, the truck will sense less power is needed and shift into 4 cylinder mode to save fuel. But when in tow haul mode you can utilize all 8 cylinders to help slow the truck down.
Lastly and most obviously, your fuel economy will tank. will all 8 cylinder active at all times you will use more fuel and because your gears will be held longer resulting in higher rpms is also going to greatly increase your fuel consumption.
Hope you guys like the video!

THANK YOU for your many informative RAM videos. I wish we would have found you or had access to these videos when we started RVing years ago in the Rocky Mountains with the Cumins powered 2004.5 RAM 2500 and then the 2012 RAM 3500. We are happy to learn that we did most things properly to ensure the longevity of those Cumins engines by using tow and haul, warming the cold engine, idling prior to shutting her down and blasting/burning out particulates after parking the 5th wheel. Back then while climbing we used the EGT readings to choose the proper gear and fuel to protect the Cumins, and on the level considered the power curve to determine our speed.

great info, thanks. we tow a 6000lb travel trailer several thousand km every year with our 1500(hemi 8 sp). about half of that towing is at regular highway speeds, ie 100-105 kph. we can tell instantly if we forget to activate the T/H after a stop with engine off! at highway speeds it will go into 7th at 100 kph and even 8th on a long gentle down grade that doesn't require braking. Upshafts are delayed by around 1000 rpm, downshifts are much earlier when braking. it is a pretty smart system, far better than the one on our previous truck(dakota towing 4000lb)

In my 2024 hemi with 3.92, while towing my 7500lb travel trailer, the engine braking in tow haul is quite aggressive especially while using cruise control. The 2012 RAM 3500 combination of "tow and haul" as well as the exhaust braking system and trailer braking system was a God send while towing the 5th wheel and having a string of deer cross the expressway. As I forcefully applied the brakes, I could hear the rapid and repeated down shifts and grumble of the Cumins. When the last deer was avoided, we had very quickly and safely lost 50 mph.

I'm finding that my transmission on my 2021 ram warlock with a V6 is acting like tow haul mode even when it's off. Ever since getting a slightly bigger trailer at a 780 lb aluminum trailer, it takes forever just to get into 67th gear. It sits forever at 5th or 6th to the point that I just feel like I'm sucking gas. I go into manual and bring it down the 5th. This is on flat ground without headwind. I'm about to reset my computer and maybe drive around with my trailer for a week and see if that helps it calm down. If I went into tall hall mode it probably would never even go into six gear. I can't afford to drive all the way to work and around town at 3200 RPMs for 20 minutes with an unloaded trailer that's insanity. Half my mileage on my trailer is empty cuz I'm moving things around.
