    to be completely honest my first viewing of avatar: the way of water wasn’t all that great-meaning, I enjoyed the movie and found it entertaining, but I had issues with the plot + subplots, however my second viewing definitely changed my mind (I still have some issues with the plot and order, but I can forgive them to an extent) I paid attention to the dialogue, the story, and I took in details, which made me appreciate this movie so much more. It’s so easy to get lost in the visuals-I mean let’s face it this movie is a spectacle, so I understand if people don’t get it the first, but that’s why I recommend everyone to at least watch this movies twice, because trust me you’re missing out on so much if you don’t. 💙

      I had a similar experience with The Way of Water. I loved it on my first viewing, but at the same time I was quite disappointed with it due to issues with the story, and a good chunk of unanswered questions.
      However, I've re-watched the film multiple times since then and I've appreciated it more and more with each viewing. I still have issues with the story and lack of answers, I'm still debating wither the film is better than the first because of it (and I hope an Extended Edition will fix those issues), but it's still my favorite film of 2022, and I discover details that I never noticed before whenever I watch it again.

    One detail I can add is that when Neteyam and Lo'ak were hurt in the first battle (with the train), Jake quickly checks under Neteyam's back to see if he had been shot through, but it was fine. Then when he actually dies, Jake checks under him again, and sees the exit wound.
    I remembered the latter scene from the first viewing, but only noticed the former on the second viewing.

    • @Aethuviel
      @Aethuviel Před rokem +6

      I don't know much about guns and gun injuries by the way, but I don't understand why seeing the exit wound was what made Jake understand Neteyam was going to die. I figured a bullet staying inside is worse, for infection and all that, and a quick search also says an exit wound is better, because a stuck bullet has focused all its kinetic force inside the body, causing more internal damage.
      Not that a clean wound with an exit hole can't be very deadly however, I've seen bow hunters take a bear with an arrow that goes straight through and out the other side, and the bear is completely dead 10 seconds later.

    • @Geekritique
      @Geekritique  Před rokem +11

      Great catch. Yeah, exit wounds are pretty deadly if not treated immediately, basically too much of the body’s interior is ripped apart and your losing blood from both sides. Being so close to internal organs doesn’t help either.

    • @silvermist9924
      @silvermist9924 Před rokem +6

      @Geekritique if you also notice the bullet going through is what caused him to die faster. When they were in the water (salt water i pressume) neteyam starts to drown. His lung was filling with the water. If not for that i believe he wouldve had a long hard recovery

    • @7Martulka
      @7Martulka Před rokem +7

      As a medic specialising in trauma (not really gunshot wounds as we don't get a whole lot of them, we're not USA - but still, I did learn about them and practice treating on fake ones) - being shot is basically treated the same as being impaled by something. And the first thing you should know about being impaled/stabbed/shot: you NEVER, absolutely freaking NEVER remove the foreign object from your body. It's going to be done in an operating room in a hospital, where they're able to control the bleeding that's about to happen.
      To the point: if get hit with something and that something stays in your body, it acts as a tourniquet, basically plugging your body and not allowing you to bleed out in a matter of sometimes seconds. So if you'd been shot in the chest area, same as Neteyam, if I was the medic responding to your call, I would highly prefer you not having an exit wound. If it's just one hole, we can pack it really tightly with gauze and hemostatics, give you some pain meds and TXA (drug making blood clot faster), hang up some IV fluids to keep your BP up and haul you to the hospital ASAP.
      Sorry for such a long reply, if anything's still not clear, I'll do my best to explain :)

    I think Spider's saving Quaritch proves that he is not his father's son. He has empathy and a conscience that Quaritch, at this point, is lacking... though it is hinted at when Quaritch shows some apparent feeling for Spider, though he said he had none. People are saying Spider is going to be the next villain, but it would make more sense to see him in a hero arc. Being a human, but having great sympathetic feeling for the Navi and Pandora, Spider could be who brings the storyline full circle back to Earth, perhaps with Kiri by his side.

    I can't wait to watch the extended cut. I feel there must be an intimate scene between Neteyam and Neytiri, because his death just didn't hit me as hard as it was supposed to. Neytiri's outrage was understandable - but from a story telling standpoint the set-up was missing. In a talk between Robert Rodriguez and Cameron it was brought up that he saw a cut of the film that was 30minutes longer than the theatrical cut. So, I'm hopeful we get to see it.

      From a plot standpoint I could see his death coming from a mile away. As a character he was basically modeled to be muffled to the background asap, by being the "perfect child" and thus mainly just existing to give Lo'ak his rivalry and conflict with his brother (which I didn't really pick up on in the movie- their vibe seemed fine). Giving the fact that he had been given the least screen time of the kids besides Tuktirey it was predictable (Just like Lo'ak's very obvious main character and future hero vibes) that he'd be the one to die sooner or later-especially because he was always the one getting Lo'ak out of the pretty much always life-threatening trouble he caused. It is a shame, since I found him to be more likeable than his little brother.

    Although Neteyam and Lo'ak's relationship haven't been fully fleshed-out in this movie, there are some subtle moments where Neteyam is always affectionate to Lo'ak by touching him especially in the head until the scene of Neteyam's funeral where it is now Lo'ak who is touching his brother's head as a farewell. There is also a scene in the movie where Neteyam and Lo'ak had a quarrel on saving Payakan, Lo'ak's response on Payakan being his brother made Neteyam annoyed in which my guess is that Neteyam kinda misunderstood that literally. We know that the tulkuns and the Metkayina tribe have a kind of spiritual bond with each other in which they called each other as their spiritual brothers/sisters just like Ronal and her deceased tulkun sister Roa and Tsireya with his sister tulkun.

    I've watched the movie 6 times now and I watched the cause and affect of different character's actions throughout to see how differently things could have played out and one in particular especially hurts.
    Neytiri had an opportunity to try to save Spider. But she chose not to. Kiri called out to her to get her attention that he was down there in danger and being taken, but Neytiri chose to run instead.
    This one decision led to her having to leave her home. And it led to Neteyam's death. Because her children don't feel the same about Spider as she does and would not leave him like she did.
    This decision is also where Quaritch and Spider get the opportunity to bond and so they save each other later on.
    Neytiri's blind rejection and discrimination towards Spider cost her so much and will likely continue to until she learns to let it go.

      I kind of agree, but at the time, Neytiri was trying to get herself and her children out of danger and away from the Recoms who were, you know, shooting at them. I don't see it necessarily as Neytiri "abandoning" Spider as much as she's making a cold calculation that to take the time to go down and get Spider might end up with both her and Kiri dead or captured by the RDA forces.
      Basically, she was trying to get away from danger and there was no time to save both Spider and Kiri. She chose to save Kiri.
      If there had been time to save Spider, she likely would have done so, albeit reluctantly.

Is like a primal fear he can't hide, we can see his face of anguish when he knows he's in the ship and he looks at one of the arrows. This same fear is why he let's go her son. Pay close attention to Lo'ak and Spider right after Neytiri starts calling out to them. They exchange a knowing look and a very slight nod.

    Something that came to mind during Payakan's "arm for an arm" maneuver during the battle was how the marine biologist aboard the Tulkun hunting ships spoke to Spyder of the Tulkun's intelligence and their understanding of complex systems, such as those of maths and physics. I love this, because it switches up roles we are familiar with on earth in a way that is not so human-centric. We have mammals here that are capable of an enormous amount of emotional intelligence and awareness but humans on earth seemingly engage with complex abstract systems like mathmatics and measurement more so. On Pandora, it is at first glance, reversed. The Tulkun have an adept understanding of such things and the Na'vi lean more towards more practical arts. I believe this intense understanding of physics and calculation ability is how Payakan (and perhaps all Tulkun if they wanted) could execute his guerilla strike with such precision despite his size and mobility adversity while out of water. Tl;dr The Tulkun are highly intelligent in a way that would be considered genius on Earth, and I love that it was shown in a creature that wasn't a bi-pedal humanoid for once. Conciousness comes in all forms, and I love how normalized and integrated this understanding is on Pandora and among the Na'vi.

    I only saw it once, and I might need a rewatch because I never picked up on this so-called rivalry between Neteyam and Lo'ak, especially not Neteyam supposedly being the prodigy of the Omaticaya and Lo'ak living in his shadow. Their brotherly relationship was as normal as ever I'd say; I picked up Lo'aks annoyance of his brother's affection and jokes as simply frustrations of being the younger brother, not the "outcast". It wasn't shown or even hinted that Lo'ak and Kiri felt insecure about their appearances (until they met the Metkayina) or that Lo'ak felt inferior to his brother and overlooked by his parents. His parents are hard on him, especially Jake, because Lo'ak has caused life-threatening trouble for not just his siblings but also other clan members, and keeps causing trouble throughout the movie. Because I never got that he felt like he needed to prove himself due to his insecurities I just saw him as impulsive, cocky and reckless. It made him into a pretty unlikable character to me (along with his main character vibes being too obvious), and I hope he grows out of those features in the future movies.

    • @Geekritique
      @Geekritique  Před rokem +3

      I think you misunderstood what I said. I never mentioned rivalry or even hinted at that. Simply that Lo’ak considers Neteyam the perfect, dutiful son that he can’t live up to. He says as much to Neteyam near the start of the third act. He tells Payakan he’s an outcast, and he tells Aunung that he knows how it feels to be the disappointment. He later laments his 5 fingers in a confrontation to Tsireya. Extrapolating all this together, mixed into the fact that the film never addresses the other two children having the normal 4 fingers, it simply hints that there are missing scenes that were cut that *did* explore that more.

      @@Geekritique My comment is a general observation from Lo’aks arc in the movie, instead of a direct reaction to your commentary. I got that he did express how he was a disappointment, but aside from Jake’s wrong- voiced concern and frustration over Lo’aks impulsiveness and rebellious behaviour this wasn’t shown, and I’m a big supporter of the show-don’t-tell rule in cinema. With the lack of scenes that prove Lo’aks claims about how he’s looked upon by everyone else it made me assume that he just misunderstands being reprimanded for being recklessness as a general disappointment in his existence and thus a self- fabricated negative self image. I saw Jake’s “I see you, son” at the end of the movie as more of an apology for being hard on him than anything else, though if it is shown that Lo’ak was really treated or seen as inferior to his siblings this line would make more sense.

    I don't know if anyone else has commented on this but at the beginning of the movie when Jake and Neytiri are talking about whether or not to leave, she holds up the bow her father gave her when he died and said to "protect the people". At the end of the movie, after Neteyam dies and she's fighting people in the wreck, the bow breaks. Her son died, meaning she couldn't protect her people. When I first watched it I was like "awww man that sucks" but it dawned on me a few days later 😭

      Not only that, she's so numb that when her bow breaks she barely reacts to it at all. That really shook me up, especially seeing her overwhelming grief at both her father and Neteyam's death. Really meant she was pretty far gone into that feral mindset when she jumped down on the ship and began murdering the RDA with terrifying accuracy 😅 she can be scary as hell when she wants to be, I love that we got to see that properly in this film, as I love callbacks to the aspect that Na'vi can be pretty animalistic at times when their people are threatened

      Quaritch is a mass murderer, the moral thing would be to leave him to die. Spider saved him because A) it's his father, and B) Quaritch gave up his chance at revenge to save Spider's life. I think definitely both of these factors were what made him save Quaritch (he probably wouldn't have saved Quaritch if it had happened earlier in the story, and probably not if he was not his father, and just some Recom he was forced to work with).

    Here’s my “didn’t notice on first time”, what do you think about it. During the hostage crisis, kiri and spider are both scared that neytiri is going to kill spider, and they just want to help each other. However, the two kids have different perspectives on neytiri’s emotions. Spider was there when neteyam dies, and he saw how devastated neytiri was and also saw her grief turn to anger when she was killing the humans. Kiri does not know this and just sees her mother threatening him. So my thought after watching the first time is “will kiri and mother have a reconcile/falling out in the beginning of the next movie”. But then the second time I watched it here is what I noticed. When kiri is saving Tuk and Neytiri from the ship she gives the angel wing breathing creature to neytiri instead of tuk (who you would think would get it because she is a young child). But when kiri gives the creature to neytiri she says “mom this will help you”. So even if kiri does not understand why her mother is so upset, she still empathizes and helps her, which in my opinion represents the start of healing the rift between them that came from neytiri threatening spider. Which is a very beautiful way to do it in my opinion

    • @Geekritique
      @Geekritique  Před rokem +7

      Beautiful moments. Thanks for sharing. My interpretation of the “mom this will help you” scene is that Tuk has had extensive diving practice. Neytiri never tries to learn the Metkayina ways, so in that instance she is disadvantaged and will need the breathing aid.

      @vernice4852 Před rokem +1

      @@Geekritique That's something that gets me thinking big time over and over again. Why is it that we don't see Neytiri learn the Metkayina ways? What happened to Jake's words from when they arrive there and he tells them that they will adapt and learn their ways? And why does it even seem like the Metkayina even accept that? She doesn't even have and Ilu and seems to still only fly with her Ikran. I'm really curious if we'll get to see something about that in the next movie.

    1. Neteyams ikran has similar color to his mothers, the green ikran. Meanwhile, Lo'ak has similar ikran colour to Jake, green-blue color.
    2. The time where Neteyam and Lo'ak got injured in the beginning, Neteyam got hurt quite badly that Jake has to carry him on his ikran. Maybe Neteyam can't ride his own at the moment. We see it when they get back to the fortess.
    3. Neytiri wears Neteyams necklace at his funeral. Similar to Jake wears Tsu'teys necklace at the end of Avatar 1.

    A major part of Lo'ak's arc in the sequels along with replacing Jake Sully as a leader, will be his inner guilt that got his big bro killed and his struggle with the guilt...
    .
    Conflicts between Lo'ak-Jake and Spider-Quaritch will be just like Cobra Kai where Lo'ak might start to relate more with the redeeming Quaritch and Spider relating to Jake with Lo'ak growing apart from him...

I have my own theories of what is actually going to be happening in the series but I'll keep that to myself unless you want to know. One aspect that you said for an Eye for an eye that I think that you overlooked was when Quaritch actually said I owe you a death to Neytiri. I'm wondering if Jake and Neytiri could go back to visit Morat or not or if she will make an appearance in any of the next 1s? Also Corporal Lyle Wainfleet never did die in the movie so they could've had him save Quaritch instead of Spider.
    Also Ronal was also keeping the Sully's at arm length as well. Neytiri also had a tuff time when they arrived to the Metkayina clan. I would've loved it to see her trouble to adapt to her new home.

    I'm not sure whether it's just a matter of opinion but I noticed some subtle hints that the Kernal may have a redemption arc ahead of him. Mostly from the looks on his face while carrying out some of his actions. Starting out with the village he burned down, as his son tells him what he is doing is wrong, the look he gives him to me seemed like he was going to say something, but then chose to say nothing...It's also the first time that he shows any restraint or consideration for the well being of a native Navi. In the past I don't think that he would have hesitated to shoot her, but I think the small interactions he has with Spider + seeing his team as Navi Avatars= The Kernal staring to see Navi as more human.
    Then again when they are hunting the mother and baby whale I kept seeing his face look uncertain/disgusted. Part of it may be because of the chase causing lot of water to fly around, but I swear I still see him making similar expressions as they are extracting inside the whale when the chase is finished. Which to me suggests although it was his plan that he followed through on, that doing so up close and personal witnessing the carnage as it is drawn out starts to make him at least uncomfortable with possibly feeling of pity he has for causing the creature so much pain. He even asks at one point "Do they ever fight back?" which I'm sure is to highlight the peaceful nature of the creatures...but I also think it's meant to suggest that he wished it would fight back so that he wouldn't have to feel guilty killing it

If he bonds with something larger like one of the spirit trees he may start to see why Jake did what he did when he betrayed the RDA.

Especially the sensation of floating through the water makes such a difference. My jaw dropped at times and I was giggling like an idiot - that's how immersed I was. Spider was still a kid, and to be blamed for continuing the plot 😂. Jk. But yeah, he just wanted a place to belong.
    Jake was at one point, at fault too. He chose war despite the council saying no.
    Lo'ak was a reckless child and Payakan was too young to be alone and called an outcast

    I watched the movie in 3D in my local cinema and struggled immensely with the quality. Not only I haven't been to 3D screening for years, I'm also not a native english speaker and subtitles were more often than not doubled by the glasses - with this movie and how 3D effect is where the camera focuses, subtitles had to jump around the screen to be in focus with the characters every time. Sometimes there was no space for it - and reading the text was unbearable. If I had the option I'd see it again, in 2D and in just original sound.
