  • A very early VHS recording of the Band that brought Ragtime back to St. Louis. Of all the video ever done with this group, this is the most honest portrayal of the fun, the love of the music and the serious fans who throw an Anniversary after party for the 1981 Goldenrod Festival. While a small concert ensemble, the Ragtimers excel as a bar band. This was a lost treasure from Don Franz's archives, that no one had ever seen. This video has been sepia toned, adapted for wide screen in 480p mp4 video (which is about as good as you can make VHS). The audio in The Captain's Bar is better than audio from the main theater of the Showboat. The joint was jumpin. The polyester was hot but so was the jazz. Mix some drinks and enjoy.

My pleasure. I may have actually recorded the first ever home video music video ever done in St. Louis. Sony wasn't sure if home video would ever take off, especially with Jack Valenti trying to block it. So, Sony distributed only 6 home video recorder/camera demo units to 6 different cities in the U.S. After the trial period the units were supposed to be shipped back to Japan. After a year or two, one of the Betamax demo units (that weighed about 60 pounds total) found it's way to a St. Louis pornographer who also sponsored the band Head East. Our music agency was lent the Beta unit to try to make some kind of music video. I took the hefty outfit and plugged it in at Mississippi Nights Concert Saloon on the Riverfront. I actually got a pretty decent black and white video of Rondo's Blues Deluxe. The next day at the agency we screened the video where I predicted that some day this would be how bands got work and sold records. A room full of musicians and agents scoffed at the remark and figured it was because I had recently stopped smoking marijuana. Herb Pfeiffer must have been connected to get his hands on a first generation of prototype VHS equipment. This was a VERY early recording, By the way, Bill Mason is still playing in T.J. Muller's band kdhx.org/shows/show/riverboatshuffle

I was lucky to have an Uncle into the Trad Jazz scene in St. Louis where I spent many hours as a kid hanging out with this community of devotees. St. Louis was so rich with all music styles, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Trad Britt/Celtic and Symphonic and between the Goldenrod Fest and The Mississippi River Fest just over in Illinois, we were all spoiled in the 70's for world class music. The Ragtimers were all hyper-intelligent rascals and gentlemen. While recording them in their final years of performance I was amazed at the quality of respect they had for each other, and got just a little taste of the usual "bickering" that comes with old marriages.

@@VideoBgood My father was from St. Louis. In the 1980s he started writing about Traditional Jazz for various jazz publications. He left Missouri in the early 50s and I doubt that he was aware of this group. He definitely would have enjoyed them.
