Well, alright. I've just cried my bloody eyes out over Godfrey being a bloody hero after all. Good old British comedy.

It's one of those episodes that you see as a child and it stays with you throughout your life. Like that MASH episode where Hawkeye witnesses a woman strangling a chicken. (No spoilers...)

@@seankayll9017 I was telling a lad in work about that episode of MASH a couple of days ago. Really harrowing.

It's what helps elevate it from the typical sitcom. This was actually quite a bold thing to do back in the day.

I always loved this story. Godfrey was mild mannered and didn’t agree with war. A man who couldn’t kill, but a man who would risk his life to save others. I know it’s just a story but the moral is there.
I’m almost certain that this played out in real life. Courage can be found anywhere.

I've just looked up Arnold Ridley on Wikipedia, well worth a read. He was truly a brave man.

Dads Army doing Hacksaw Ridge about 50 years earlier. Loved this episode ❤️ Dad’s Army had such nuance to it - so elegantly written and acted

I always thought Godfrey was treated very badly in this episode.

He was, but that was the point. In both wars "conshies" were considered and treated as but one-step away from traitors in refusing to fight the enemy of us all, seen as betraying us in our worst times for some arrogant, pointless, selfish and smug belief. The point of the episode was to point out why that was wrong, even if understandable, especially with the last few lines.
It had to be harsh to be poignant.

You have to see it from the perspective of veterans from WW1 who would have risked their lives in horrific conditions, probably/possibly been injured and seen friends die in the mud. Their reaction to those who refused to risk themselves like they and their friends had would be be very understandably hostile. The twist here only works as Godfrey had also risked his life in the same way.
