  • The ASUS Gundam 850W PSU is actually one of the best we've tested, but the Gundam elements are sorely lacking and insufficient for the price. The PSU itself is top-notch, though.

    This review of the ASUS Gundam ROG Strix 850G Gundam Edition PSU tests the power supply for efficiency, build quality, protection circuits, and more. A big aspect of the PSU is the actual Gundam branding, since the PSU itself is an existing ASUS PSU that's been rebranded (and is built on top of a Seasonic platform).

    For people saying a magnetic plate is nice because then it can be moved -- sure, but then they should just sell a $20 branded magnetic plate instead of a $280 power supply. That's our main gripe. It seems a lot of people have not really realized that it could then be sold cheaper and separately if that was the goal. That's not why ASUS made it a plate - they did that because it's cheap and easy.

      I'm concerned that 850W doesn't seem sufficient to power a RX-78. How does an 850W PSU produce the 1.9 megawatts the beam rifle fires? Even for Mobile Suit Gundam this seems to violate some laws of physics.

    I work as a Product Designer and I can already tell why this Led panel is an external part that gets attached with magnets.
    I am pretty sure the Designer envisioned this integrated into the PSU, but once you include changes that go beyond color and accessories in a product for a limited edition, it results in project management and Sourcing losing their shit, even if the changes do not cost a lot of money.
    It might not be cheaper, but it is a lot easier for them to tell the manufacture of the PSU to just make it white and then they are ordering all the accessories from vendors that do small production runs. That way they do not have to modify the supply chain of the Psu and everything is pretty straightforward.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  Před 2 lety +53

      Yes. You don't need to be a designer to know that this would require a change in the construction. The thing is that it's a piece of stamped steel that takes seconds to make by machine and it's an expensive product. It's really not that far of a leap to just make it better at this premium price.

      @jakob.k_design Před 2 lety +8

      @@GamersNexus I did not wanna excuse the end product. But instead just explain, that it is not down to money in this case, but instead just the laziness of product management and that this is very common.
      Btw, everybody can see that it would require a change in construction. That was not my point, but rather that it is not the fault of the designer or even cost, but just down to the management processes in a large company.

    I feel like the removable RGB plate for the PSU isn't necessarily a bad thing. People are paying a premium for the Gundam brand, but when they eventually have to replace the PSU due to failure or having to upgrade, they can easily slap the plate on the new PSU. Love the PSU reviews! The time you guys put into your reviews is very much appreciated. Back in the 80's this type of information was not nearly as easy to get ahold of.
    I know you guys are very busy but one thing you may consider doing is a basic overview of power supply stages, maybe in a block diagram format. With some of the mentions of components being a string of letters, it would be nice to have a 'reference' video to refer to for those in the audience who are more interested in the workings aspect of PSUs. I would be interested to know little things like the inrush thermistor bypass relay to increase the efficiency. Otherwise, only a few of us electronics techs or engineers would understand a lot of the presentation. Also, as you go through and identify components you could update us as to the perceived quality of these components in relation to weather they are known value oriented or high quality oriented.
    I specifically suggest this because of all the in depth reviews of peripherals I think the PSUs would be some of the least understood for system builders.

    Great review! Nice to know that such a premium PSU has the quality to match its theme.
    I'd love to see more reviews from the Gundam-branded collection, especially the red Zaku-themed stuff (since presumably they offer 3x more performance)!

    And again thank you for speaking about the OEM manufacturer of the supply as it's the bit that matters about 90% or more towards the actual performance. This is something GN did not do in the first several PSU reviews and it's good you are listening to feedback. Keep up the good work.

    i prefer that the external lighting portion is a magnet. it gives the option to place it in other places of the build or re-orient it based on the PSU position.
    personally, id like to see more things like that included with cases and motherboards, where the lighting effects are modular and can be re-positioned or removed.

    Incorporating an extra LED into the power supply would require re-certifying it (UL/CSE/CE). Approving a separate low voltage light panel is much easier. Also makes ordering parts for production easier.

    Something I would like to see, though I don't know if it's possible maybe a separate tear down video, is to remove the components, like removing the heat sinks and the daughter boards.

    The most interesting looking PSU I can remember was made, or at least marketed by some small company back in the early 2000 or possibly even late 90's. It might have been Sharkoon (or some similar spelling) or it was some other company that no longer is in the PSU business. My memory isn't what it should be.
    What made them interesting was that they made the case of perforated steel plate all over, and the way they attached the modular cables. Now it is quite possible that I mix up two separate manufacturer, but whatever...
    The very well ventilated case was not really any good for the cooling as the air just leaked out all over the place rather than follow a designed air path.
    The connectors for the modular cables were styled after BNC connectors, so they had the chromed external spring loaded collar that locked on to the connectors on the back of the PSU so it was a very sturdy connector and it looked like something you would find in a radio transmitter installation or a military communications hub. All in all these PSU's really looked like premium products.
    Add to this that the PSU's were shipped in something that looked like a tool box (or was it a bucket?) instead of the usual cardboard box. My memory fails to provide details again. Whatever it was It was made of plastic and might have actually been the best thing about these PSU's though I kind of doubt the snaps held up very well.
    Unfortunately, but hardly surprising the looks was all that was interesting about these PSU's as they were pretty horrible in all other aspects.
    I also remember my boss came back from Comdex or CES or what ever it was and learned that he had missed their booth. Not that the products was that interesting but they had booth babes clad in a very small tanga, body paint and a smile. They had quite a lot of people documenting their booth and uploading their pictures to different sites. Yea, not really hat you would call good taste.
    I'll see if I can find anything about the PSU as I really wonder how well my memory has been holding up.
    Edit: I've been looking but my Googlefu is weak and the only thing I've found is that it probably wasn't Sharkoon. Problem is I can't think any other name at the moment.
    Edit: I couldn't stop looking but has yet to find any traces of that PSU. The old tech sites that were around at the time such as Toms and Anandtech has purged their archives and currently their archives only goes back to 2014 and 2017 respectively. I have a feeling that OklahomaWolf did a teardown of one but as Jonnyguru has been down since sometime early this year there is no way to find the review if it exists. I can't really remember any other site that was active back then, are still online and might have reviewed these PSU's. I'm afraid I'm stuck...

    This might not be the most glamorous content... but since Jonny Guru went to work for Corsair, it's VERY much needed. Love how these go down to the component level since there's so much more to a good, or a bad PSU, than who "makes" it, the wattage and the 80+ rating.

A cousin, whose family was stationed in Japan, brought back some of the videos (fun to watch, aside from no ability to understand the language). Speaking to your video, I appreciated the metered use of show references (neither too much nor too infrequent!), and Stone's electronics overview was really cool. 👍️

    Oh wow this was honestly great, the only minor thing that i would wish for is: please put the names of the components inside the PSU somewhere on the screen.
    Listening to Patrick talk about the parts felt like listening to a disquisition about quantum physics in swedish, i barely understood anything. and being able to see the names written out might make it easier to remember them.
    Oh and please consider reviewing the higher end BeQuiet PSU's they seem like they deliver pretty decent value, so it would be interesting to see how they perform.
    Thanks for reading, have a great day, and continue with the high quality reviews. :)
