  • Are you struggling to catch fish in rivers? As a beginner fly fisherman, fly fishing can be hard, and many trip will often end in a skunk. Today, i cover one of the most effective way of catching fish in river… nymphing. I will talk about my rig, how I approach river, and how i mend.
    Detail about my rig:
So from the fly line, I have a taper section of around 6-7ft, this taper section that come down to 8lb test would contain the strike indicator. I highly recommend the pop release strike indicator because it is easy to change depth as well as release upon fighting a fish so u can land it easier if ur fishing with longer leader. I attach this to a small swivel (I believe it is size 18) and below the swivel I attach tie an improve clinch knot with 6lb flouro and making a longer tag end. Ild attach my top fly to that tag and my bottom fly to the main leader. I like to have the heavier fly at the bottom, in this video the bottom fly is a hares ear while the top fly is a sexy waltz worm.
Detail about how to approach water/mend:
when approaching a river, I like to keep a mental note of structure if possible, in this video that would be a rock shelf leading to a drop off. These structure is what you wanna start with and then start fan casting to cover different water. Fish can be feeding at any section of a pool so its not uncommon to catch fish right at the bank and catch fish further out near the middle. While casting I would try to cast upstream for 2 reason, allowing for an easier mend and allowing longer drift time. With indicator, when mending all you need to think about is how could I move my fly line so that it doesn't interfere with the indicator, which will interfere with ur flies. For example, if you cast and ur indicator and fly land in the slow water, but majority of ur fly line is in the fast water, then you have to mend ur fly line upstream. If you cast into the faster current and ur fly line is in slack water, you have to mend downstream. and if u cast in a straight line up stream, all you need is to pick up/strop the slack line as it come toward you. Some of these can be hard to visualize while reading so GO OUT AND TRY IT. Fly fishing is something u can only get better with practice so go out, have fun, explore, and try It for urself.
