I have been scratching my head trying to figure out the best way to mount a Caddx EOS camera inside the frame of the Tinyhawk without adding much weight and without compromising how crash-resistant it is. And I think I finally found it :D
All you need is 2 pieces of zip ties (I used 2.5mm wide) and a bit of patience. Crash tested and confirmed: it works like a charm!
As for the antenna replacement, if you are looking to fix the flashing issues in the DVR recordings, better go for a complete VTx swap instead. I will not be using the DVR from the Tinyhawk for anything more than just a backup in case of a crash, so I will probably not bother with an upgrade.

Just did the camera upgrade mod! Brilliant idea on how to mount the camera in there with the zip tie. I'm surprised everyone isn't doing this. I had a thread going in the fb tinyhawk group about trying to focus my emax camera and breaking it in the process. I linked this video to that as it was my end solution. Thanks for your help!

Thank you so much! The lens on my tinyhawk fell off after a hard crash, and when I tried to put it back on, the infrared filter came off, so all the grass is purple! Looks kinda cool, but gets annoying after a while. I was debating buying another stock camera, but then I found this! The Caddx EOS2 appears to be about the same price, so I'll definitely do this instead. You're a lifesaver!
I am happy you found it helpful! Check the camera orientation before installing it, people told me that the EOS2 has the wires on the other side of the board.

The zip tie mounting worked BEAUTIFULLY for the Caddx cam.
Actually I did it as a repair AND as an upgrade:
Flying the Tinyhawk along having a great time... I crashed in, of ALL places... The dogs' water bowl!
Even though I grabbed it out as fast as I could. The stock camera "drowned".
The Caddx EOS is so much better than the crappy stock one.

did the antenna placement affect charging with the USB, like does it get in the way at all?
I have a USB cable with a slim connector and it could fit just fine. If the connector is bulky maybe this specific antenna gets in the way. You don't have to use the exact same antenna I did though :)

Some really helpful tips there, I like the zip tie cam mount technique! I'm struggling with my stock cam right now, which is how I ended up here. Trying to get the stock cam back in the tiny hawk is maddening! I haven't tried squeezing the canopy. Here's hoping it helps. 😉
Oh, and I think I figured out why "muteFPV" ... the way the music loops on this video made me go on a frantic search for how to mute YT on my phone after a while, LOL! 😉

Squeezing the canopy will definitely help you pop it back into place. You can use a pointy tool to help the top tab of the camera get into the slot too.
I am doing the best I can with the royalty-free music I can find. There are times that a video edit ends up much longer than I anticipated and the fact that I sync footage to the music and do jump cuts to the beat makes it impossible for me to change the track afterwards for something longer in duration. It is a bit of a struggle and greatly time consuming but I like the end result. If you watch my lightweight 5" build, the music will most probably drive you crazy :P

This is brilliant. My Caddx had to be placed so that the wires were coming out of the bottom though. I did this install and my image was inverted.

Oh that is strange, I don't have many EOS to check but both of my 4:3 and 16:9 had the wires facing the same way as I did in the video. Thank you for the feedback!
@@muteFPV Sigh, maybe because I had an ESD but after upgrading, one of my mosfets on my esc failed

@@muteFPV that sucks. I emailed emax last week. No word. I bought it from BG. I'll try them next. I have a trashcan with the throttle limiting set up on a slider. If I gave to replace the tinyhawk I would probably buy a whole one for the extra $50
That is true :( If I had a reflow / hot-air station I would try to find and replace my mosfets, but without one I did not bother, ordered a replacement part. By the way, mine wasn't because of electrostatic cause or similar. I was experimenting on my thrust test bench and probably pushed it too much. The ESC rating is very low...
I just did this with an eos2 because i cracked my cam on a crash. Slightly diff zip tie technique but this was such a good idea. Thanks so much!

You're welcome :) Don't bother with the antenna upgrade, if you are happy with how it flies now. Maybe stick the stock antenna out of the frame instead of replacing it.

I honestly can't believe you did all that work and didn't change out the VTX.
As I said, I have perfectly clear live video feed and don't intend to use any more DVR footage to post etc. Also it is just 4 screws away from removing the board so...
I use “hey clay” to secure camera, works absolutely amazing! Its easy to form some kind of protective cockpit around camera and because of spongy structure it works as shock absorber. Also i guess it can let drone float in case of water landing but don’t wanna try :)

Thanks a lot for this tutorial! For upgrading my stock (RTF kit) Tinyhawk’s camera, should I choose the PAL or NTSC version of the EOS2? And are there any other considerations, such as 16:9 vs 4:3 etc?
You're welcome! It is a matter of personal preference, I usually choose PAL and fly 4:3 aspect ratio but it depends on what you have got used to. Keep in mind that some people reported that the wires are upside down in the EOS2. Better power ON the camera before installing so you make sure it is mounted right side up.

Thank you very much :) I ordered one of the recent tiny VTXs, I think the HGLRC one, but I don't expect to have the time for such a video any time soon.. lots of stuff going on at the moment. It is a very easy swap though, just match the pinout of the tinyhawk board to the VTx and stick the VTx securely on top of it.
I installed the eos2 and didnt care for the 170 degree FOV so went back to stock.
I fly mostly indoors and made it harder to maneuver.
I think my EOS1 4:3 was 160 degrees, I preferred it both indoors and outdoors. Did you try the 4:3 or 16:9 EOS2? Or do they have the same FOV?
At 4:00, you say the tab needs to be bent over but if I pulled the zip tie tight when adjusting the angle and adding the second lock-in tie, wouldn’t there not be any play left to bend it over?
If you see at 02:40 and 03:00 I did not pull the zip tie completely through. I can't remember why, probably my zip tie was big so I bent it over the FC at the end because otherwise it wouldn't fit. If you pull your zip tie all the way and the FC fits nice you don't have to bend it over at 04:00 like I did.
@@muteFPV I see that now. So even if I need to leave that slack, it will stay tight enough to keep the camera snug. Thanks. My lens popped off Xmas day. Ironically, probably because of a 3D printed protector putting a prying pressure between the lens and the detector during a los crash. I don’t even have one fpv flight in yet but the patient is going under the knife today. Maybe I’ll finally get to see what all the hype is about.🛸😊

On osd, what is number with bars and the one with triangle. I know stock setting on osd has rssi. So whatnis other one and which one is it in betaflight.
The other one is the throttle position, it goes from 0% to 100%

Is there anything you can do to help the picture stop dropping out or getting so much interference? Also can you use any radio to control any drone and goggles too? Or do they have to all match?
In the case of the tinyhawk, the video feed is bad only in my DVR - when flying it is fine. Changing the VTx should fix this issue.

Sorry not control the goggles, but like can any goggles hook up to any drone? I thought I saw somewhere that the rtf Tinyhawk kit can only use the controller and goggles it comes with. I’m looking at the eachine wizard x220 with the flysky i6 controller on banggood which will be cheaper than ordering the Tinyhawk. Do you know if banggood is hard to deal with? I’ve seen some bad reviews..
It depends, some RTF bundles may be a bit "locked down". I haven't used the Tinyhawk transmitter but I think you can use it with other FrSky receivers. If you buy the FlySky kit you mentioned, you will then need to use compatible receivers for it. As for the FPV video feed, it is most commonly a "5.8GHz" signal and you can use any VTx with any monitor or goggles of this kind. Banggood has good prices, a wide FPV-related product range and cheap shipping options, but customer service can be bad in some cases - at least they respond and they usually resolve issues quickly.
I was fiddling around with my tinyhawk camera and accidently popped out the lense, any ideas on how to place it back. Do I need glue and take off the body frame in order to glue the lense back on? If so, how am I sure if it's in the right position(Sorry for the questions, I'm high rn)
Did you pop off the lens completely (both the cylindrical lens body and the square base)? If yes, you can glue it into place. You can power ON the camera and try the lens on it, just be careful of dust creeping on the sensor.
I'm thinking about tbs unify nano upgrade with camera. I get horrible range outside my building. Guessing because all the wifi. Feel like antenna alone won't help too much
That would be a nice and lightweight choice. The nano goes up to 50mW?
@@muteFPV unify pro32 nano goes to 400mW..( tbs website says there's a 500+mW option) and weights 1g.. immersionrc tramp is slightly bigger goes to 400 or 500+mw.. they use a lot of power though 😲
Ah the pro yes. Little beast of a VTx. To be honest I wouldn't run it at high power. Not only for the power consumption but also for the limited cooling inside the Tinyhawk canopy... I had done a video about how important airflow is for the vtx, maybe you want to take a look ;)

It is normal for a VTx to be hot, even at 25mW, especially when on the bench. Don't worry about wifi, it doesn't matter at all. For this reason it is better to not go much higher in power, if you mount the VTx inside the canopy. Maybe the circuit lowers the power if it gets too hot, I don't know what safety features it has
great tweak! how much weight did you put on? does the extra affect flight control?
Thanks! Weight before/after is at 07:23. It was noticeable but the 4-bladed props balanced it and felt better than stock overall. If I was doing this again maybe I wouldn't bother with the antenna and save a fraction of a gram (or change the stock VTx which was not that great).

Probably were not available at the time and the nano v1 had issues with foggy lenses. Or maybe I only had the EOS available :P Can't remember, it has been a while since I made this

I know this is an older video so hopefully you can answer this. Will the Vee Race antenna work well with the goggles that come in the rtf kit?
Probably yes but maybe it is better to upgrade the stock VTx instead of the antenna. A simple dipole / "whip" antenna will be fine and better VTx will give you cleaner VTx (and higher power output, depending what you choose to use). I ordered the HGLRC Nano VTx but haven't had the time to do the swap.

Thanks :) I test-fitted both and I had a feeling that the shape of the EOS lens holder fit better inside the Tinyhawk frame.
@@muteFPV Ahhh, I see. I thought the runcam might be a better fit, since it is a bit lighter... mainly because of that slimmer lens holder.

Great job great channel! Just thinking there’s probably a lot of guy like me that would love flying such a little upgraded beast, but with no skill material patience and risk of waist to give it a try. It’s interesting to see guys like you providing diy information that big sellers won’t do, for commercial reasons. Just like I got all my setup in a little and « physical » shop after a bad banggood experience, and even if it’s Hard to avoid the big market place, I would rather always give my money to some independant guy like you than order a main stream product... it must take a lot of your time to run such a channel, but just for curiosity, do you sometimes work on commands? Keep the flying dream on!

I am struggling to put out the videos I currently work on and have plenty of ideas and projects that have been waiting for me to finish, all of which will be very interesting :)
Mods, repairs and builds are a big part of this hobby so you can't get away from them and will eventually have to do a lot of tinkering and soldering on your own anyway ;)

I remember seeing a FlySky mod video, he used RX1 pad, 5V pad and I think battery GND. I haven't tried it to confirm it would work with something like an XM receiver (I wouldn't add anything heavier than that)
Is the length of the antenna make any difference?
I assume you mean the shielded part of the coaxial cable and not the end of the antenna. No it doesn't matter, it is just better to use one that is just about the right length, because there is not much space under the canopy.
Replaced the VTX with a TBS Unify Nano and added a TBS crossfire Rx. Also added a buzzer which seems heavy. Now I still consider if I should replace the camera as well with EOS2. Do you think it worths the extra weight, now that you actually did the mod?
It is worth it but maybe it will be too much of a weight increase in your case. What is the AUW now?

I made the same set up with my tinyhawk, but since then it keeps droping out of the air with the stock pids, can you tell which you have got? and what betafligh version you got?
I used stock PIDs, haven't flown it since I got the V2. Does it drop out with RXloss? Or is it some kind of a deathspin (spins out of control and crashes, without losing receiver signal)?
@@muteFPV It is some kind of deathspin, when i try to do a flip/roll it cant recover or if i bump something slightly.
In the past there were a bunch of BNFs that suffered from it, the first thing we did was raised the motor idle (in betaflight configuration). But you should also check DVR footage and see if it always drops first at one specific motor side (for example maybe the spin always starts by dropping the front right side first). In this case I would swap that motor with another side and see if the problem follows the motor.

I added 10uf on 5v pad. It cleans up the noise from fpv feed.

muteFPV the lines from motor noise will get reduced by much.. About the flashing dvr, it never happened again to me. It happen oncd when i maiden it, the vtx was at R4, and my fatshark was at F4. vtx bleeding? .. Also when i fly with alot of metals around.
I also add another 10uf on 3.3v pad to fix the brownout.. But the last batch already has it installed.
Yeah my board has the cap on the 3.3V pad so I have had no Rx loss issues.
I don't get video noise in the live FPV feed. My issues are only in the DVR flashes.
Did you have a lot of flashes in the DVR, like I did? And they went completely away when you added the 10uF cap on the 5V pad?
muteFPV yes you have a vtx noise issue, i can see that clearly on your dvr. Maybe noise from vbat/motor. You will notice the difference after adding the caps on the 5v..
Why you use vee antena ? not gem or axii ?
It is supposed to be very well tuned and is very light, compared to other options. So better than stock without adding much weight. No other reason :)
@@muteFPV i want to upgrade my trashcan antena, and i think about vee and gem (ofc from actuna)
On the trashcan, if you fly mainly on 2S, you could go for the AXII. It has plenty of power on 2S. For 1S I would try not to add more weight.
Does this have any impact on how it flies for you? I put the eos2 on mine but it doesn't seem to fly as fast now.
It adds a bit of weight but with the Avan-TH props it flies pretty much as well as it did stock.
@@muteFPV Think I got it fixed, I'm thinking it was the excess of hot glue & bulky solder&seal connectors I was using weighing it down, I switched to the zip tie method and it flew just fine.

Damn.. I wouldn't recommend replacing it without removing the board from the frame, the opening under the camera is not wide enough to work on the antenna (you could try though)... If you unscrew the motors you can pull the board a bit further away, but desoldering 2 of them will let you flip the board over.
@@muteFPV I did already replace the receiver antenna since it broke and replace battery wires for solid pin ph2.0 with 20ga wires..

It depends on what you prefer, I usually use PAL cameras, but you can choose either one.
Hello Joshua. You make really good videos. If I wanted to use a Runcam Night Eagle on a Tinyhawk will it work electronics wise ? Or will there possibly be voltage or other issues ? Does the Tinyhawk provide a constant voltage to the camera ? At what level is the voltage provided to the camera ?

I don't see any resemblance to Bardwell's videos and I am truly curious to know how you reached to this conclusion. Did something in the video suggest that it might be his? Because the style of the video, the quality of the "production" and the channel name itself remind nothing of Joshua's channel...
As for your question, if you are talking about the Night Eagle 2, Runcam says that it can work on 5V and draws ~200mA at this voltage. I don't know the current output rating of the 5V rail of the Tinyhawk board but even if it can't deliver enough power, you can use a separate step up regulator. I don't comment on the fact that it will barely fly with the extra weight because you are speaking strictly electronics-wise.
Yeah I dunno, It seems I just somehow got mixed up between your videos and Bardwell's maybe because of the way they are sometimes listed together in the CZcams lists or something - not sure how it happened. Anyway, thanks for your reply on the Night Eagle. Sounds like the Night Eagle will not be practical on this drone. Can you perhaps suggest a camera which will be most compatible with the stock camera of this drone but much more light sensitive ? I am not concerned about resolution - 600tvl is fine. Great light sensitivity is what i'm looking for even if I have to remove the IR filter so more light can pass in. ( I don't want to use IR lights ) I don't want to mess around with the weight of the drone. I'd like to keep it close to what it is. Any pointers and suggestions will be appreciated.
You're welcome :) I wouldn't go for anything heavier than the Caddx EOS / Runcam Nano but maybe there is a micro camera that can suit your needs. I don't have a specific recommendation for you, sorry. The new Ratel from Caddx is advertised as low-light capable but I have not tried it myself to know - I doubt you can fit it inside the stock bump of the tinyhawk frame.
Do you need 35 or 55 mm version? Is there much improvement over stock?
If you mean the antenna length I can't remember, I had both short and long versions. Not that big of a deal, it turns out that the VTx is not that great (especially when recording DVR but I suspect this is because I am using PAL gear / camera) so maybe change that instead.

@@Crazy2limchai no, the added weight will be too much. Maybe you can replace the stock VTx with a VTx that has a built in DVR, but then it will be hard to access the microSD card under the canopy..

Question for anyone I upgraded cam but not antenna, find I get a lot of lines through video feed and less range. Any fix?

Changing the camera should not affect your video feed and range in a negative way. I am interested to hear what caused it if you figure it out.
Which camera do you recommend ? EOS1 or 2? 16:9 or 4:3? PAL or NTSC?
Aspect ratio and video system is strictly a matter of personal preference. If you can find an EOS1, I think it is a bit lighter. Both should fit the same way.

Yep, DVR and CZcams compression kill the actual footage the eyes see in the live video feed.
i have just done it with eos 2.. but my osd did not showed up? why?
It most probably has to do with the OSD settings in Betaflight. Switch from AUTO to PAL or NTSC and/or move the OSD info upwards a bit. It should show up in the video feed.

The added weight affects flight time a bit but the better image quality is worth it.

i fix my eos2 with the side screw now i can adjust the angle for indoor or outdoor ant that vtx is realy crapy i've change mine with a tbs unify nano waaaaay better
Yeah the VTx is bad, especially if you want to keep DVR footage.
I thought about using an EOS2 but the sides of the canopy are not flat. So the camera can still move out of position in a crash, no?

I over discharge my battery down to 3v and idk why my tinyhawk instantly drops 2 feet mid air and recovers until it hits the ground.
3V under load (while flying) or resting voltage (a while after the flight)? Does this drop happen with that over-discharged battery or with any battery?

Does it affect the tinyhawk when you discharge your battery all the time? why is my tinyhawk just DROPS 2 feet mid air and recovers all the time I put batteries
@@cyberduck7377 no, overdischarging your batteries does not harm your Tinyhawk, if you mean that. Have you enabled the WARNINGS to show up in the OSD? Maybe it failsafes from time to time and then regains connection and recovers? Please enable warnings in OSD and check the DVR footage, does it show any warning like RXLOSS when it drops?

Looks like you are getting a ton of multipath issues. Perhaps a RHCP AXII micro would have been better.
Nah, it is because of the stock VTx. I have flown other micros with whip antennas there without any issues.
@@muteFPV yeah I upgraded my vtx with a hglrc nano gtx but was really hoping for a tbs unify pro32... Ill have a video up buts its clearly labeled on the tiny hawk board not hard to remove the stock one

@@muteFPV Just in case you wondered I have the TBS pro32 nano and it works like a champ at 400mW just make sure you keep it cool with air rushing over or it blacks out.

I doubt there is anything you can do. The aspect ratio is a matter of the camera sensor, not the lens.
Tnx for this vid dude, the tinyhawk "honest" reviews from star youtubers are a BIG LIE! the camera on tinyhawk is the worst ever seen on quad. you try to fly in the afternoon close to golden hour sun times and you cant at all, in the shade you cant see ANYTHING. I regret getting the tinyhawk, my mobula7 has frame problems but the camera and vtx are spot on. I will order the camera you said. the only question thst I got is will I be able to mount it to get very low cam angle? I wanna see the whoops in shot.
Yeah the camera and VTx of the Tinyhawk are far from great. You can mount it a bit lower with the zip tie bit not completely flat. I will be doing a few mods on the Mobula7 too (camera, vtx, antenna, canopy, frame)

I remember trying my EOS2 inside the curvature of the canopy and it fit well too. You should be able to do it the exact same way. Let me know how it goes!

Switch your OSD settings in Betaflight from Auto to NTSC or PAL, depending on your camera (or move around the OSD info until they re-appear. This should do it.

Encountered same issues with the RapidFIRE. This flashing is only in the DVR, the live video feed is perfectly clean.

@mistercohaagen @RockTouching I tried both the built-in DVR of the Aomway Commander V2 goggles and a friend's Dominator V3 with RapidFIRE module. Both had a perfectly clear image in the live video feed and both had a lot of flashing in the DVR footage.
@@muteFPV Have you tried the firmware update for the DVR in fatshark goggles? Supposedly the flashing in the RapidFire Is due to the DVR switching between PAL and NTSC
