    jjk is a weird series, it feels like it treats it's power system with the upmost amonunt of details and how it evolves and stuff like that, but asks for the reader to pay close attention to subtle moments of characterisation, growth and interactions and to play a connect a dot with it's plot to see the bigger picture, and I kinda respect it for it, it feels like a story ripe for analysis and multiple interpretation and you don't see that a lot in battle shonen even in the most critically acclaimed ones.

    Gojo is basically designed to be hard to relate to. His own strength alienates him from others like a force field, similar to his cursed technique. He is a force of nature who struggles to see others as more than just bundles of energy and matter. It’s why he wears the blindfold.

      @@NINJAMUSHI It’s a tricky series in that respect. It elaborates a lot on some things and very little on others, leaving it up to the reader to make some really important connections tbh. Still, I’m really enjoying it so far.

      A lot of characters are alienated. Yuta with Rika murdering every one and trying to be a good person: he enjoys it
      Yuji being a freak which strength not getting to enjoy his things and being told what to do: not a hero but a cog in a machine
      Megumi and his lack of parents, lack of love and nurturing path trying to be that for others: literly creates creatures that love him after he beats them into submission. He has a God plex that he reals back.
      You already said gojos
      Maki a super strength heroine who has to deal with messaging and basikly being a slave: her fight to find peace to find love. And finally connection. She literally has to use glasses to see the world we get to see.
      I could go on and on. But the characters have depth and feel human when you take a minute and read between their lines. Yes the battle system can be complicated coughHAKARIcough

    I couldn't care for megumi until his talk with gojo where gojo calls him out for playing it safe all the time and then a bit later seeing him try his shadow garden despite the technique being incomplete. He is the perfectionnist who gets in his own way by overthinking. His journey isn't getting more powerful, it's overcomming his fear of mistakes, which is a lot less flashy and less linear. Maybe it's because I haven't watched that many shonen and happened to watch those who don't use this trope, but it felt fresh in a genre where you typically expect everyone to show off almost all the time (and it made him a lot more relatable too).

    This are my exact thoughts. When I finished season 1 of the anime I didn't really enjoy it, but soon as I started reading the manga, my opinions changed. And now I am completely caught upto it and readily look forward to each chapter coming out
    Edit: let me try to explain domains in the simplest fashion. So in jjk, you can create barriers. They can be for several purposes. Blocking someone out or inside the barrier etc are some of it's uses. It can be seen used by shamans when battling a curse so that normal people can't see or enter it to keep jujutsu a secret. When you apply your imagination and cursed technique to this barrier to trap someone in it, it's called a domain. Simple.

      @NINJAMUSHI  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for the explanation!!

    • @Angglio
      @Angglio Před rokem +2

      Would be cool if you also explained Simple Domains and Innate Domains

    • @ShuraEssays
      @ShuraEssays Před rokem

      @Angglio a bit late to this, but I'll try:
      Simple Domains need a little explanation. Domain Expansion is the highest level of modern sorcery, so they're both potent sure-kill moves and incredibly hard to refine into those potential sure-kill moves. However, the "sure-kill" part of a Domain can be negated if somebody opens a domain inside your domain and maintains it. That's Simple Domain - a barrier with no technique added to it that weakens true Innate Domains so that sorcerers who haven't mastered Domain Expansion can stand a fighting chance.
      Innate Domains, which I assume is related to Innate Cursed Technique, I've just never heard the term before, is what I elaborated on before, with the sure-kill move usually baked in. As the story has progressed, we've seen more and more unique Domains that haven't been sure-kills, but instead apply special conditions, like some Nen abilities from HxH, or perhaps more exactly the "territories" from the 3rd arc of Yu Yu Hakusho. Basically, you imbue your Innate technique, like Todo's Boogie Woogie or Megumi's Ten Shadows, into a barrier, and unleash that as an attack. Maybe not those exact techniques, actually . . .

    Another thing I really like is the villains in the story and the theme of self identity and understanding. The constant clash of ideals and the self affirmation and understanding of characters is always seen as a positive however kind or cruel that person may be. The duty of a sorcerer, the nature of the soul, our roles in the grander scheme of the universe, our base instincts and our faith in our actions and decisions inspite of consequences. It's all so interesting to explore especially when you take in the deep Buddhist philosophy ad teachings sprinkled thoroughly throughout the series. It's what makes Sukuna, Geto and Mahito such interesting antagonists for me. Granted I do feel like more time could be spent on exploring these ideas in some down time, since the manga is fairly fast paced we don't really get this as often as I would like, but for what we got it was brilliant for me

    You said you wanted a different perspective on Yuji's motives and ideals so here I am ! I really disagree with that criticism and here's the explanation as to why.
    This comment is going to refer to you in third person because I sent the video to a friend and we started talking about it and this came up, I'm just putting everything I said here :
    It's frustrating seeing that one of the very few complaints he had with the character writing was simply due to not understanding the point of the character.
    At 10:46 he talks about what he considers shortcomings in Yuji's introduction and in that section he talks about how we didn't spend any time with his grandfather "for establishing his core beliefs that will be ever present in the themes going forward"
    he says "his grandfather acts as a glorified parcel to deliver the ideals will try to hold on to throughout the story and I think it could use more focus"
    the problem with that is that he thinks yuji legitimately holds on to the motive his grandfather passed on to him in chapter 1 when that's not the case (see chapter 132 page 15)
    yuji was only using that motive and that ideal as an excuse to justify his own life, when he knows that staying alive with sukuna inside of him will bring about a lot of death. But he's scared of dying so he will cling to an excuse and say "well this is my ideal and as long as I use it to drive myself forward, it's okay for me to be alive" (first panel is from chapter 7 page 12 and is showing him being scared of dying and the words of his grandfather popping up in his head, the second panel is from 127 page 6 where he says so himself, that he was only using his conviction as an excuse and that after sukuna's rampage, what he feared most did happen and he can't forgive himself for it)
    the page from 120 when Yuji sees the aftermath of sukuna's rampage shows him becoming suicidal because of exactly what I explained and page 18 from 127 shows him saying "I was about to use my sins as an excuse to run away" meaning he considers staying alive, not being strong enough to contain sukuna and lying to himself about having a motive that drives him to be sins (it's also a brilliant moment of him realizing he shouldn't make the same mistake and making excuses just to he wouldn't have to fight, just like he used an excuse to stay alive all this time)
    in 132 he says himself that he's moved past the need for finding a reason or ideal, and that he's just gonna keep doing what he should as a sorcerer, hence making him a cog in this whole jujutsu kaisen ordeal
    so, no. his grandfather wasn't important in the way that that youtuber thinks he was, he will be important at some point in a flashback I imagine (if we get one) but more so for plot related reasons (kenjaku being yuji's mom)
    anyways, great video ! I'm very happy you're a fan of the series ! that's really all that matters to me at the end of the day. love the videos !

    I think jjk shines in its balance between writing and classic shounen action. As i am getting older and reading more and more manga, you would naturally want to seek something new and interesting but still want to enjoy great fight scenes. Manga such as black clover just dont cut it for me anymore, it has great art but it really lacks depth. But what makes jjk so good to me is in its balance between action and its philosophical stuff. It knows when to insert great dialogue and and when to just show action.It is also imo great that its writing is not so pretentious that it bogs down the reader, but just enough to feel that each character has depth and are not just surface level tropes. I have always maintain the opinion that jjk was a more mainstreamed version of chainsawman

    I watched the whole video and i do understand your prespective but i cannot help myself to think that whenever you read JJK manga it seems you just breeze through it or only take the writing on a surface level without thinking too much about it (I do think every single word of dialouge matters and deserve a deeper look into it because they are all subtle hints to characters personality or development) . Also, with all respect it seems you are quite slow when it comes to understanding characters or powers when they are initialy interduced. Maybe I am just used to this kind of story telling because Hunter X Hunter manga is complex in this regard.
    For me personally,
    (1) i liked Itadori when he finally faced the reality of this harsh world when he faced Mahito for first time.
    (2) I liked Megumi from the start, when he says i choose to save people selfishly and i am not a hero , i am a jujutsu sorcerer.
    (3) Nobara is quite simple , yet selfsih at time yet compasionate when things matter, so i liked her for those reasons.
    (4) Gojo became my favorite character at the flash back arc , how he used to think saving the weak is not worth and how he flipped his views after what his friend done.

      You don't need to tell me I breezed through it or I didn't think about the writing-that is literally the entire point of the video, if you were to pay attention. Plus, a lot of what I'm saying in this video is in reference to how I felt during my time as a non-fan, not how I feel now. Please don't tell me I'm slow about understanding something, there's nothing respectful about that nor is it true. My dumbass literally wrote a 350 page book on JoJo and its power systems/characters; I am fully capable of comprehending writing, I assure you. You have to understand, I paid zero attention while reading JJK my first and only time (because I just didn't care) and that is solely why I didn't understand all the terms and technicalities of the system. It isn't that I am too slow to understand, or that I have a difficult time understanding, I literally did not care to pay attention to it when I was first reading it because I, frankly, didn't give a shit about JJK until recently. It had way too much wordy shit for me to want to read at that time, though I would take the time to read it now. You try reading something that you hardly care about over 2 years and retain of its information, it's hard lol. In comparison, I read/watched Hunter x Hunter and retained a lot of how Nen works because I actually loved HxH from the beginning and, thus, paid more attention.

    I questioned the lack of backstory background information of Yuji Itadori as well. There was little focus with his grandfather and it seemed like Gege made it a point into hinting Yuji parents and what he should know but doesnt say. As the manga is coming to a head, now we know why that information was kept from us and we still dont have the full story. Gege seems ro do this alor withold information...
    I honestly fell in love with JJK quite easily, I loved Yuji Gojo Maki Toge Todo etc. I am also a Bleach fan and I can see why I fell in love with it with the amount of inspiration it uses.
    I will say it took me a while to also like Nobara. Im all for badass women or girls but she felt kind to rough. Im a girl so I wonder if something was wrong with me ^^' because I do like feminine supporting characters like Utahime and Shoko but was oddly not liking Nobara. Especially when Maki was introduced and I absolutely live everything about her. It took a while but Nobara grew on be because she does hide a sensitive part of her, she hides it to protect herself from getting emotionally hurt. I think I initially disliked her for her hypocrisy of being better than everyone in her town idk.
    I did like Megumi a bit but not really. He was just there and I kept an eye on him since he wasnt as active for a large portion of the anime. I liked his style of fighting, shadows are dope thanks Shikamaru. I think it was his constant lack of doing things, like Gege would tease us he was finally going to do something cool but never did. I would get excited but then dissapointed right after lol. His DE was what finally got me to like him fully.
    Yuji and Gojo are pure gold ❤ they are rays of sunshine in the entire anime/manga. You cant tell me otherwise. Both Yuji and Gojo suffered just as well yet continue to not be broken down. I love everything about them tbh. I am patiently waiting for Yujis turn for Gege to give him his spotlight.

    I took along time to get into jjk. I keeo seeing my anime channels talking about it an I would skip those videos cuz I didn't know the anime an then sometimes I would watch them an then started getting Intrigued so I watched the 1st season an was hooked after episode 1. So then wanted more an got into the manga an now am up to date on everything an follow the manga. It's just hard being a mom now to watch animes an read Mangas an stay up to date on everything wit my hero, demon slayer an jjk. Those are my top 3 that I stay up to date on. Wish demon slayer would have had a longer manga run but o well still waiting on the rest of the anime.

    I really do wonder if it’s the characters because I felt the exact same way. I watched the first season and liked it a lot but I didn’t seem to love it like some. I started the manga over and read through Shibuya to the current arc (am a few chapters behind 😅) and even though I’ve loved the plot something still felt off. I did a deep dive on why I felt like this and ultimately I came to the main cast. Itadori is cool and an above average character but he’s just not that interesting in comparison to others like Okkotsu . In stories like One Piece etc I often found myself excited by the side action of the supporting cast while simultaneously wanting to see Luffy asap. Both sets of characters were interesting. With JJK, I don’t feel that way, when Itadori isn’t the main focus of the chapter, I find myself content and excited to see the supporting cast. I don’t care as much about what Itadori is doing. The same applies to Megumi, Nobara and Gojo, they’re all interesting but not in comparison to others

    okay so i finished writing this comment and after reading through it i'm unsure of how much it actually relates to the video but i also kinda want to share my thoughts so i will just post it and if it seems a bit unrelated to the video sorry 😅
    I loved this story from the very first episode of the anime and i feel kinda lucky that i did cause it's one of my favourite shows ever and it brings me a sense of comfort and personally i think that's cause i instantly clicked with 2 of the characters on a intimate level but also because i genuinely ended up liking 90% of the characters which is rare for me xD
    I relate to megumi a lot cause i too have a rather black and white sense of justice but also struggle with just how little grey there is in my sense of justice while other times my sense of justice almost just the grey area due to being Autistic (i only speak for my own experiences and world views as an autistic person, i don't represent ALL autistic people even though i'm sure i'm not alone in my experience either.) and his sense of self-worth that seems simultaenously high and low, he has this sense of self-worth where he believes that his worldview is correct while at the same time doubting his own awareness of how the world works and how he experiences it, so he's stuck in this depressing cycle of ''I feel that my decision was the right one, but in the end what does that really mean or matter, i'm not really important in the grand scheme of things so why should i put in the effort to begin with, i'll let others live their lives and then just try and fade into the background cause i don't actually matter in this world.'' but he also wants to make a difference at the same time he's just stuck
    Also why i relate to Gojo (and headcanon both him and Megumi as Autistic) is his complete lack of understanding for social cues yet somehow still being able to read them perfectly, his tendency to be kinda cruel to the people he cares about without really meaning or intending to be cruel to them, taking his teasing a bit to far and not really knowing exactly how to show that he didn't mean to go that far and how to apologize or make amends, he somehow is able to perfectly understand others yet he doesn't really know how to interact with them outside the roles of ''All powerful super human'' and ''Class Clown'' essentially, but he also seems a bit bored with life (which i relate to) because everythin comes easy to him (which i don't relate to lol) but both him and megumi seem like very lonely people, they're both surounded by people but they're still lonely.
    Gojo because he's been put on a pedestal and people have a hard time relating to him or they feel like since he's so strong and powerful that they're not /allowed/ to relate to him and Trauma.
    Megumi because he's learned that no one ever really stays for good very early on in his life and that he's not really important to anyone so why should he make an effort to connect with the people around him, but he also really wants to make connections with the people currently in his life aka Itadori and Nobara xD
