    Just for clarity (no pun intended) the $30 Universal version was cut by Alex Abrash at AA Mastering from a digital file supplied by Bernie Grundman. Great video Mazzy, you cut through the crap most other CZcams influencers make us listen to.

    Nice job Mazzy...the only recommendation I would make for your listening room..... switching from the 25 Foot Lufkin Orange measuring Tape to the 25 Foot Yellow model..this will give you more ambiance and less siblance in your listening room between your speakers and ultimately will allow more air between the instruments 🤣😂🤣😂
    This was how a shootout should be...honest, reflective and straight to the point....not the usual mumbo jumbo technical BS that people usually spew on these videos...that most don't understand or comprehend...including the person talking!!!
    Cheers🍸

    Thanks for the continuous great videos. Also, want to mention regarding the masterpiece first side of Finley Quaye’s first album Maverick A Strike, his second album Vanguard is also worth knowing about. And then, like Beck, he totally switched directions and did somewhat of an alternative Pop rock album, not my preferable style of music but wow, its a beautiful, unique and well done album titled “much more than much love”
    Wanted to mention it because I feel like you’ll really enjoy much more than much love, Finley is quite the hidden gem

    I think your comment on expectations is really the heart of the matter. The very nature of a vinyl shootout sets up that very scenario. Honestly, anyone should be able to quickly tell this UHQR sounds different than any previous version, including the $30 digital. While it defies “Logic” in some ways, it does (when listened to on its own) present a more compelling listen that I expected once I got past the shock of it. The key question remains why this “smooth” approach was selected…it was not the tape quality or a mistake. Something had to be less gratifying with delivering it “as expected”. I am in search of that answer .

    +1 on that Electric Ladyland - that's the Hendrix record that I want to hear "everything" as you say ... If it was on the Master, I want to hear it. Back when you were an under assistant west coast promo man 😎 I was working in a small recording studio in New England and generally if we mixed it onto the Master, it was intended to be heard and now that you and I have more worthy systems, I want to hear them again proper - because it's the music. By the way, the tape measure bit is *hilarious!* Outstanding video Mazzy

    Onya Mazzi for actually saying it. Some titles that are being reprinted on any of the newer “quality sound” formats really don’t need to have to be remastered to hear every detail. Some rock albums will always sound best on the version you first heard it on, and the one you have kept because you deeply love it. No need for any more detail. Keep up the great work. Cheers from Oz

    Sometimes, I feel out of touch because of what I like. I hear everyone, all the folks I listen to, praise certain albums and I get why they like them and such. And it's not that I DON'T like those albums, they may not be the ones I reach for when I want to listen to a certain artist. For me, I will reach for Pretzel Logic many times before I do Aja. I should be shot, I know. I LOVE AJA …seriously I do. Pretzel Logic though....there is just something about it that brings me back to a "place" in my life. And, to me, it's just as much an amazing album as Aja is. I feel the same way about Pink Floyd's Animals. LOVE Pink Floyd. Love Dark Side, and the Wall and everything else...Animals puts me in a place...a space from my past. Anyway, thanks Mazzy for all you do!

    Brilliant video. I love the fact you are so honest with your opinions which is not the case with a lot of other, so called audiophile channels. In particular, MOFI deceived their customers deliberately which is unforgivable in a retail environment. Some channels get freebies from MOFI, who then 'review ' these records and the integrity of those reviews is compromised completely. Its unfortunate as I am sure some of these records do sound good but who do you believe. You are 100% correct on the one step and UHQR boxes, they are awful. Anyway. Keep up the good work. • @DJMurphyChgo
    @DJMurphyChgo Před 10 měsíci

    Thanks for the video, Mr. Maslov! I’m sort of with you; typically, the OG copy (or as close to it that’s financially or logistically possible) is for me my go-to preferred version, with notable exceptions like L.A.M.F. or the original CD version of Yes’s Fragile (where Joe Gastwirt’s redux is an amazing improvement, no shame whatsoever to Barry Diament). For the MoFi One Steps, I have done a shootout between my OG Atlantic Fragile (1841 B’way) and the MoFi. I have to say, even though the OneStep was quieter, it was also more, shall we say, sonically “polite”. Even though some audiophiles like their prog rock to come with their tea-party manners intact, something tells me that the band’s original intention was something a bit more aggressive than that. I also heard the OneStep version of Fagen’s The Nightfly; even though I was blown away by it, I pretty much get blown away with that album when I hear my own stock-copy WB CD as well. Also, we didn’t have an original WB LP for sake of comparison.
    There are times that I have indeed splurged for the premium MoFi (or otherwise) version of a given title and have been glad that I did (usually when I’ve been initially dissatisfied with the standard version). Other times, the MoFi “bump” hasn’t justified the premium price. At the end of the day, to reiterate your original point, we each have to form our own opinions and choose accordingly.

      @@mazzysmusic It’s been awhile since I heard this album. Have you ever noticed how plastic and organic your perception of an album is after not listening to it for a period of time? Of course, the musical composition is wonderful but, it’s what you expect from Steely Dan; that jazz rock fusion sound of the seventies. This time around, I’m more impressed by the lyrics; simple yet complex in themes; sounds a lot like what I would imagine medieval german troubadours might sound like (the goliard)…mundane, experiential, worldly. Certainly contrasts with it’s counterpart musical sophistication. If Cine Noir had a sound, I could perfectly envision it as a Fagen-Becker composition. I was more a fan of Aja but, so glad I’ve revisited Pretzel Logic. Always been interested in Steely Dan (any “group” that has featured Larry Carlton and the great Wayne Shorter has to be heard).

    I like the picture of your storage facility Mazzy lol. I started watching somebody's "albums that sound amazing on vinyl" top 10 the other day. I don't think they are the type of people that would be aware of this but most of the albums they mentioned ( Thriller, Daft Punk- Discovery etc) sound amazing whatever format they are on. My vinyl copies of Thriller and discovery do sound better than most of my other records but I have them on CD as well and they are also far better sounding than most other CD's in my collection. With those 2 examples it's in the genius production, Thriller sounds like Jones took each beat out to dinner and wined and dined it and popped it back in as the best beat in the world. I get that regardless of the format I'm listening to it on. I hope you're well Mazzy

    I have a black label ABC in VG to VG+ which I upgraded for condition, but the NM copy I found happens to be a yellow label 74 Repress. Then I got the 45 this week. The yellow is the brightest, maybe a little too bright, but because of condition that's the one I always played until I got the 45. The black label was balanced on the high end and the 45 got the prize for overall clarity and low end. From now on, I will likely go with the 45 when I listen to it. I don't know if it's worth $150 compared to $80 for a NM Black Label or $40 for a NM Yellow Label... I've decided to get 3 UHQR Steely Dans. Can't Buy a Thrill is head and shoulders above the original for me. Hopefully Aja will be a home run too. Maybe if I let FOMO take over I might buy Katy Lied as well. Appreciate the shoot out Mazi. I agree with you 100% on the over-bloated packaging, slim it down and drop the sale price ;) As for Pretzel Logic, I've appreciated it digitally for a long time, I've never found a decent OG or early pressing unfortunately that wasn't beat to crap, so when the UHQR came along, I figured, WTF. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, I'm sure with no point of comparison I'll enjoy it, but I think that feeds into your point. When it's something you know inside out and go the "premium" route, expectations will always be a huge factor.

    I agree with you about 33 vs 45rpm but the 45 KOB is seriously better SQ wise- - the hi hat is in the room like no other recording i've heard. Musically I prefer the MOFI 45 KOB mix.
    Bob Marley Legend is a super budget buy.
    I agree standard black vinyl is perfect if done well. A lot of the AP's from the 90's were and remain amongst my faves, although I now realise many were on supervinyl so there is something to it.

    Great vid, Mazzy. It was nice to have a “review / comparison” vid of some of these higher end pressings, but cutting through a lot of the unnecessary nonsense usually involved. It seems like these “audiophile” titles (or all pressings for that matter) should be taken on a case by case basis, as they’re not always better, but rather oftentimes different instead. The MoFi, AP, or whatever pressings I’ve got are interesting alternatives to an original and oftentimes sound fantastic. That said, I do usually prefer my originals. Appreciate you and this vid. Now with that said I’m told it’s what Chad Kassem desired while being presented with the reviews of sound quality. Does that make it better to listen too? I’ve heard yes it’s supposed to sound like that? I also feel maybe some records sound can be over digitized if that makes sense just a little too hot? I have the Elvis in Memphis Mofi one step. I understand what you’re saying about the Mofi and UHQR boxes. On a purely functional level, a single record cover or gatefold takes up a lot less room and is less expensive. But we’re not only talking about function here but also esthetics which is important to some of us. The Mofi, I agree is not only needlessly complicated but quite annoying to remove the records amidst all that cardboard. So functionally it’s a failure. And the esthetics are nothing special either. The UHQR, on the other hand, I think is appealing both functionally and esthetically. The outer boxes are quite appealing esthetically, easy to open and access the records. Unlike the Mofi, the records have their own gatefold, beautifully done.Yes they take up more room but they’re designed as a premium product which sets them apart from the usual releases. Certainly Chad couldn’t charge $100 or $150 for regular jackets, even with the special vinyl formula. Call me superficial but I happen to like these boxes. When I take them off the shelf, I feel I’m holding a premium product in my hands, something special. Is part of the appeal the fact that it’s expensive? Probably. Some people like expensive watches. I’ll take a UHQR any day.

      @ericlubow4354 Před 10 měsíci

      Mazzy - Not to belabor this but you’re right- it’s not NECESSARY! But maybe we should ask ourselves “in whose eyes?” Are $10,000 watches necessary when a $30 one will tell the time just as well? Are $150 ties necessary when you can buy a very presentable one for $20? Are $50,000 turntables necessary when you can get very close to the same sound for $2000? Of course not! But we all like different things for different reasons. What one person may love may seem ridiculous to another. It’s big world. We all perceive things differently and everyone’s entitled to their point of view.

    I don't understand what all the fuss is about (but maybe I do). I played my Pretzel Logic UHQR this morning and I thought it sounded great. I also have an original black label ABC pressing which has always sounded very good as well as the yellow label ABC repress and even the MCA Coral label repress. Whether or not the price of the UHQR is "worth it" is up to each individual to decide. I suspect all the whining about this UHQR pressing has more to do with the VC herd mentality than anything else. One self proclaimed "expert" produces a video slamming Chad and A.P. for the release and all the other VC lemmings pile on because they want to be liked by their "peers". I'll put my faith in Chad Kassem and the rest of the true experts at A.P. every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Keep up the good work, Chad and bring on Aja!

Firstly, how does my comment on "herd mentality" reflect back on me when I'm opposing the opinions of the "Collective"? Secondly, I certainly don't recall seeing a video that you posted reviewing the A.P. Pretzel Logic - positively or negatively on the UHQR. Nor do I recall singling you out in my posted comment. So I don't understand why you're acting as if this was an attack on you. Or maybe you feel you have to rush to the herd's defense because I posted a comment that wasn't exactly "Kumbaya". I also don't remember seeing a video by any of these self-proclaimed experts where they invited in Chad Kassem and asked him "Gosh Chad, what went wrong with PL? We think it's terrible!" I started collecting in early 1970s but unfortunately lost the collection and in my youth didn't have the insight, which is common. So music lovers and record lovers these days are stuck with re-pressings. Berkeley California Amoeba Records. Original 'Cant Buy A Thrill' ABC label in "good" condition, they wanted $50 for what was a $5 - $7 record when it first came out. Then the best tracks are worn out, fidelity shot, because whoever owned it played the hell out of it.

    I have three separate systems, in my mobile home. Yes a little overkill, indeed, but my gear is rather inexpensive as it fits my limited budget.
    One of them is a vintage Pioneer SX-780 receiver with a UTurn turntable, and Pioneer DVD player; one is a Reisong A-10 tube amp with a Technics SL 1200MK2 and the same model Pioneer dvd player; the third one is a modern audio/video receiver which is used mostly to watch tv.
    As far as those mobile fidelity records I have two. The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” & “Let It Be”. The Sgt Pepper always sounded lousy. I’ll stick with listening to the originals I do have both vinyl and CD copies of “Pretzel Logic”, and it’s hard to pick a favorite.

    • @mazzysmusic
      @mazzysmusic  Před 10 měsíci

      True about level differences. But when you listen to two versions you might raise or lower the volume and it’s easy to tell which is more appealing to you. You hear and feel the music. It’s nit science with graphs and DR numbers ✌🏼

    • @scottwheeler2679
      @scottwheeler2679 Před 10 měsíci

      @@mazzysmusic actually there is a lot of science here. It's just often overlooked and it's a PIA to address correctly. As you raise or lower the level the perception of tonality is affected. It's what is known as the Fletcher Munsun curve. So as you raise or lower the volume you also change the tonality. Just a 3 db increase in level will make a recording sound brighter and bassier. You can take the exact same recording and compare it to itself at 1 db higher level and good chance in an A/B comparison the 1 db will sound *better* Not louder but subjectively better. Perceptual loudness is also frequency dependent. The same SPLs will sound louder or softer depending on the frequency of the sound. 90 db at 3kHz will sound very loud. 90 db at 20 hz will not sound loud at all. But they will both measure at 90 db SPL. Perceptual loudness is frequency dependent, perceptual loudness affects preferences and levels affect perceptual frequency balance. So such a casual approach to setting levels will give you a much higher degree of randomness in your results. Sometimes reality is not convenient.

    Of all the ‘premium’ audiophile records, I think the Craft Small Batch come closest to getting it right. Slipcase, generally a decent and accurate reproduction of the original jacket and artwork, a small booklet that adds value, and a slightly lower price point than the UHQRs (albeit they’re cut at 33, not 45). The ones I have are immaculate and sound great. As an international customer, I also far prefer dealing with Craft.
