    We should thank the Lennon estate for skipping Sometime in NYC, an atrocity. Mind Games is not a stand-out record, but there are 2 or 3 standout songs on it. I might pick this up as a CD if I see it out. I like the Imagine CD with some bonus tracks from several years back. Wall and Bridges I would probably buy too. But that would be it from Lennon's solo career.

Not the ”Wowy Zowy” edition but the fact that in 2021 on Amazon the six disc iteration of “John Lennon/POB” retailed for $114(US) upon release. • @4-dman464
    @4-dman464 Před 16 dny +1

    MG album cover was out of touch with the '70s. Looks lifted off any 1967-68 British broadsheet Sunday Supplement. In our Art class, schoolteachers used to compile them to get us kids to cut them up in collages - - to keep the trolls quiet for an hour in 1968. It was either that or glue trawlers together out of cigarette packs & papier mache. I can;t remember what we used for masts, but it could easily have been cigarettes. There wasn't a lot of subtlety in Manchester education.
    The mind games notion is also very '60s - -specifically, 1966: Eric Berne. But where Lennon was in vogue was downsizing mind games from social interaction to couple culture, building up from demolishing the band to Janov's groundzero to circling the wagons with Mother. And so goes JL in his last decade, becoming less & less relevant (because "Screwyou, I'm here for Yoko"): downsizing universal love from 1967 to couple culture in the Me Decade. That's just how it was: he made a choice.
    (Historians looking for accuracy can't be positive all the time even about heroes. We get a choice too: between fanboy or historian, but we can't credibly be both.)

But the Lennon deluxe sets to date have been really exceptional, and so I hope that this one will do for 'Mind Games' what (for example) the 'Trouble No More' box did for some of Dylan's born again phase.

    You will get this set. You always do. Because you are wealthy and have the wherewithal to do so. Other people would want this set, but unfortunately it is beyond their means. • @jldraw
      @jldraw Před 16 dny +3

      See that’s unfair. A lot of it is “lifestyle choices”. I am completely sympathetic to someone who is a huge Beatles fan but is struggling just to make ends meet and thus cannot afford much or any of the music they crave. The economy throughout the world has been hit hard and many people are struggling. But there are also many of us who fall into that same category of living paycheck to paycheck who make “lifestyle choices” in that we sacrifice to obtain the music we want. For example, Mazzy mentioned he doesn’t have either of the two Tom Petty/Heartbreakers Uber Deluxe box sets that came out in the past four years. I have both in my collection but I don’t have Uber “All Things Must Pass” and will be sitting out on Uber “Mind Games”. Mazzy I believe has Uber “All Things Must Pass” and several other items I’d love to have in my collection. Choices.

    You can argue all day about what the value of these kinds of boxed sets is. To each his own. But here's my problem with all of this collector's edition stuff. Mind Games is John Lennon's weakest album, in my view. I've had it for decades, and I rarely play it. The only memorable track is the title song, and it's only memorable because it's so repetitive. It's certainly his most underwritten hit. The rest of the album is a big yawn. So putting out a set like this for such a weak album seems like such a waste. I'm sure some people love Mind Games, but I'll bet if you ask a thousand Lennon fans to name their favorite Lennon album, I'll bet Mind Games gets fewer that 5 votes. This isn't art, in my view. It's product. But, as you said, if you have the money, and it seems worthwhile to you, go for it. But my first consideration is always - do I love this album as a piece of music. If the answer is no, I don't care what's inside the box.
